I was going to her concert straight from work. I had clothes to change into, but when I got in the building, I could hear Black Dove and knew it had already started. I was bumming about missing the meet n greet. I get in and it's like a school theatre, really small, and not all the seats are full. I'm standing in front of the front row trying to see where my friends are when, for some reason, Tori's not on stage. She is right in front of me asking if I had a kleenex so she could blow her nose. The mic is on us. I said, "No, but I've got a sock you can use." I held up one of those boy socks that are white, with the black rings on top. "It's clean." But no, she opted not to use it. Then I went to the seats we had. Everyone by this time had moved up to the front space between the stage and the first row of seats. My friends were just sitting in their seats many rows back. We were right about to move up front, when my damn alarm clock went off. Very weird, but cool. Hi Guys, I just thought I'd take two minutes to try and put together something more coherent than "Those stupid no good at East/West, what do they think they're doing?!" and try and look back over the events of the past few months and see where things went wrong... First, Jackie's Strength was announced, 2 CD set, including "Merman" - general joy and merriment, everyone hands over money to CD stores around the world in order to secure their copies. E/w kickstart their promotion machine with adverts in the trade press, and indeed in-store promotional CDs including Jackie. So far, so good. - - evaluation : good start - Second, Jackie is "postponed" for a further 2 weeks... much grumbling, but no real problem. - - evaluation : wheels have begun to fall from wagon, yet it trundles on - Third, Jackie is cancelled, no reason given, despite there being both a video, possibly even CDs pressed. (Or if they had *ever* planned on meeting either release date, CDs should have been pressed). - - evaluation : horses have bolted, both wheels have fallen off wagon, and cargo is spoiled - Fourth, Raspberry Swirl is announced, and the video makes an appearance on "The Box". Promotion is minimal to say the least, yet they manage to release a promotional CD in the UK (2-tracks, "Lip Gloss Version" and "Naked") the release date on the promo is August 3rd. - - evaluation : new horses and wheels, cargo is spoiled, but still saleable - August 3rd comes and goes, reviews appear in the press and on Channel 4 teletext (last week, sorry I forgot to report it at the time!)... everything looks ready for the August 10th release.. - - evaluation : destination neared, nothing can possibly go wrong - Then it gets cancelled? I'm sorry, but that makes no sense at all. It's a suicidal move for a record company to constantly break their release dates, and then expect the fans to be happy when they finally decide to throw a product out. I suppose now they'll start promotion for "Playboy Mommy" (which I guess will be the fourth single?), release a promo, shoot a video, send the singles to stores and then tell them not to sell them... - - evaluation : driver has gone insane, dismounted, shot both of the horses and set fire to his own wagon - The promotion here in the UK for this album, and these singles has been nothing short of appalling, it has been mis-managed from the outset, radio-play has been minimal (to the point that I have never heard either JS or RS on the radio), and to be quite frank, members of the public who might be casual Tori fans would never have known that RS was due to be released next week. Simple as that. Of course, when a single does get launched, and it doesn't sell, it's not e/w who will take the blame, it'll be the artist. I'm sorry, but Tori is still producing consistently good music - and it isn't her fault that the marketing monkeys can't do their job here. So where does that leave the Toriphiles in the UK? I mean, granted, the US has only had one single, in Spark, and it didn't have all the tracks that the UK version did, but Tori is in the US, has been making prominent TV appearances, and has a very promising new single with new tracks on the way. Here, she is being forgotten after the tour, there is no chance of new appearances, and unless e/w do something to remind people, the audience will find itself dwindling. However, I've still not been able to contact anyone who I usually try and contact when these things arise to find out if it has been re-scheduled, etc, etc, etc... so let's hope that they see sense and it is released on Monday. The CDs *MUST* have been pressed, so all we need is to find them.. they'll be in a distribution warehouse somewhere. Anyway, I'll stop ranting now, and let everyone else disagree with me... ;) Mike ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 07 Aug 1998 14:07:30 -0500 From: Stephen Wiener Subject: On-sale date for Dallas concert announced!!! On 7 Aug 98 at 13:13, Mike Gray wrote: > Anyway, I'll stop ranting now, and let everyone else disagree with > me... ;) I wholeheartedly agree with you, Mike. We're being treated appallingly. Without getting nationalistic, the tale of UK Tori promotion is a sorry one; she's hardly ever on the TV, the radio, and the only place I saw posters advertising the "Choirgirl" album was in my student union. Abysmal. How do they expect to sell records to people like this? However, the fact is that the music business in general is in a sorry state. Sales are down, singles are now loss leaders, acts aren't taking off - but it's the suit's fault. Because the music business is just that - a business - it's run by account managers and lawyers, not people who actually love music (i.e. artists and fans). Nowadays, they're more interested in clubbing together some godawful boy/girl band, making some manufactured singles to sell to 12-year-olds, and then making a quick buck and moving on to the next lot. We're plagued with substandard music through the media, and a great deal of real, brilliant music ends up on cottage-industry independant labels selling only to their own fans and never growing. Whilst Tori is getting bigger and bigger in the states, due to huge promotion rounds and tours, Tori's been getting smaller and smaller in the UK since Under The Pink. And it's sad, it's really sad, because it can be avoided so easily. It just means getting rid of the breadheads (peace, man) and getting people in charge who actually love and care about the music they're selling. But that won't happen for a long time, if ever (or at least until B*Witched and Boyzone split up). Release Raspberry Swirl! With the right promotion it will be a HUGE HIT. They just don't fucking realise it, because they're too wrapped up in selling candyfloss. Rant over.. back to bed (I have a hangover) Paul. Hi Guys.. So, I've been talking to a few people today about the non-appearance of Raspberry Swirl. Fact : E/w promised stores that it would be with them *today* for release Monday. Fact: The stores paid for it. Fact: It was listed as *2* CD Singles, and *1* Cassette Single. Fact: It never arrived. No reason was given, and no subsequent date has been given. Nice. - -- So that's it. Nobody is any the wiser - they paid for it, E/w promised it, and it didn't arrive. It was pulled sometime yesterday, apparently, with no reason given. Many retailers claim that they're still expecting it in the next few weeks, but let's be honest, there's more chance of Joel encouraging Tori to stay out longer talking to the crowds. So we in the UK will just give up now, and hope that E/w finally decide to release something, and if they do, let's hope it's worth the wait. Did anyone else think Tori sounded very croopy on her low notes of Jackie's Strength on her Conan appearance last night? I was wondering, for those of you who've seen her this week in concert, is that her sickness singing, or was she just nervous (she looked very nervous to me-- well, maybe not nervous, but just not at ease or comfortable)? For those of you who've seen her this last week, was she croopy in the same parts of the song, or was it just this one performance? I know she usually performs this song much better in concert. She tends to hold back and sort of freeze on television, just a bit, I've noticed. Just wondering, jen ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Aug 1998 13:13:35 EDT From: Thorpie679@aol.com Subject: Re: Tulsa Tickets -- INFO Okay...so, i'm answering my own question. hee. so if anyone needs this info, bear with me. (however, i have yet to see bubbles again since this night). this was also the first time i had seen raspberry swirl... excellent! we didn't even try to meet tori afterwards because she was sick and we knew the crowds would be unreal. august 1 - boston - fleetcenter this was a fun day! we ran into joel (tori's bodygaurd) on newbury street. we talked to him for a few minutes. he informed us that tori had been real sick with a sinus infection and had post-poned the other new york show the previous day, so tori and crew had been in boston as long as we had - 3 days. we asked what time she would be arriving at the venue for sound check and he told us 3:30pm, so we high tailed it back to where we were staying to change and then caught a cab. while we were waiting for tori's arrival we met some really cool girls - gina & lisa - who we now call the glitter girls. (they were covered in glitter and will be seeing 17 shows this tour!). tori arrived right on time. i got my FTCH postcard signed (the only thing i had on me) and tori spoke to melissa for a second and then borrow her book to look at. (if you haven't caught on, melissa and the guy imentioned earlier, james, did the mtv news 1515 thing with tori). we spoke to joel after tori went inside and he said that tori wanted time to look through the book melissa made of the whole mtv experience. so, we got the book back from joel after the devlins played that night. inside, tori wrote a short note for melissa. she had forgotten that she left a few random pages of journal entries in the back... one of which had the lyrics to cooling written out. tori played the song that night... funny. melissa was in complete shock. the show that night ws great. we were sitting on the front row of one of the last balconys. it was weird.. the place was so big.. it was almost like observing a tori concert. watching tori as she plays to her fans. we went to the stage door after the show to meet up with the glitter girls again. they convinced us to go to wallingford, ct with them... so we bought their extra set of tickets. august 4 - wallingford, ct - oakdale center this place was amazing. the venue was small enough to make it feel like the old days. the seats were soft and the stage was huge! tori was great that night. she played so many just random songs! mother and pandora's aquarium were 2 highlights. 3 girls were in front of who were drunk. during space dog they got a little too obnoxious for me. so, i informed them that's they were not at a bar and told the to shut the f*&k up. so, they did. :) we learned to "hang 10" this night. during tori's 7 minute performance of the waitress, there is an additional verse that goes something like "i'm gonna go where she goes, honey, hang ten baby, i'm gonna go where she goes". after the show, we were some of the first people in line at the stage door. it was a little crowded... so many people - "tori is a rock star now". i got her to sign my ticket stub from that night. she was nice, worked to crowd well, signed as many autographs has her hands could go. we met up with the glitter girls and the rest of the EWF after tori left. it was sad to see everyone go. we had to go to DC that night. and then home to atlanta. lots of hugs and farewell wishes later we were off. but, in 1 weeks, tori & crew and the EWF and the glitter girls will be here to see us for 2 nights! (atlanta 8/17 & 8/18). so, even though we are home now, our plugged 98 tour is not over! the complete set lists and additional reviews of these 3 shows can be found here: a dent in the tori amos net universe. http://www.aye.net/~mikewhy/torimain.html (i look forward to finally meeting the man behind this site, mikewhy, in atlanta) i have pictures from the before show boston meet&greet that i will be sending to mikewhy for the EWF section of the site. look for those in the coming weeks. ps - i think i may have been removed from the list while i was gone. some of my email started bouncing. i'm am SO sorry about that. how can i get back on? - -rusty http://www.cantnot.org/rusty ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Aug 1998 18:00:45 EDT From: EnVy77@aol.com Subject: here's a great tori q & a Q&A - Tori Amos @ Rolling Stone aol://4344:1828.ta980806.15599453.586905698 ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V3 #279 *************************************
