Tori wrote it.....You can find out where she said it yourself! >It's not that difficult.... In my opinion the source for quotes is anything but trivial. The source for any bit of information regarding Tori, including quotes, is VERY important to me and to anything I post on the Dent. As much as I appreciate anything Tori related that Sarah or anyone else shares (and I do appreciate it!) the value of such a quote is greatly dimished when the source is not known. Richard has already posted some reasons why this is so. As for being able to locate a particular quote, there are so many articles out there now that the task of looking up a quote is nearly impossible. Now I am not trying to mean to Sarah or anyone else. I enjoyed the quote she posted. But having the source is so important. The fact that people change over the years makes it even more essential. What Tori said about her sexuality in 1992 is quite different than what she says about it today. For example, those who saw Tori in 1992 and even in 1994 know that her movements on the piano bench were much more "sexual" than they are on this tour or during the Boys For Pele tour. Tori is STILL sensual on stage, but she is not constantly grinding away on the piano bench like she did in the early days. There were lots of quotes in the early days talking about her sexual presence on stage. But lately, Tori has admitted to toning that stuff down. Like in this article that appeared in the June 14, 1996 issue of the Dallas Morning News called "Tori Amos tires of her unconventional stance": "But while she continues to question religion in her music, the singer says she's distancing her career from her other noted obsession: sex. In the past, her concerts were libido-crazed affairs in which she used her piano bench like a marital aid and talked about performing acts of self-love while listening to _Led Zepplin II_. But that was the old Tori, she says. "God knows what I was up to [onstage] a few years ago. I was just not comfortable with my womanhood, and I had other stuff going on that I've since worked through. Now it's shifted from being a sexual show to just being a passionate show, on a physical level, a mental level, and a spiritual level," she says." Tori also alluded to this in a recent article in The Observer Newspaper in the U.K. from May 24, 1998: 'The more comfortable I get with my sexuality, the less it starts leaking all over the place,' says Amos, as we get up off the grass. 'I think it's only when you feel that you don't have anything else to say when you fall back on that age-old "give a little shoulder, give a little wink, give a little sex" stuff.' What I am trying to say in a really long winded fashion is that Tori, like everyone else, grows and develops over the years, and knowing when and where a quote comes from can be important to undertstanding it in context. What Tori says about herself on stage in the early 90's differs from what she says today, and for a quote by her to be useful, it is good to know when it was said. Where it was said is also important for documentation purposes. There is so much misinformation out on the net that the only way to be sure of a quote's authenticity is to state its sources (It could still be wrong, but it helps.) I don't think Richard was trying to be nasty to anyone. He is simply expressing a concern about sources that many people, including myself, take very seriously. And yes, I know that makes it ToriCon '99, but hey, I'm the patient type ;) I had many inner debates about the location and finally decided pleasing the masses isn't my thing. Sorry guys, but putting on a well-organised Con *is* more what I was after. Remember, OkToriFest - organised by the guys at PlanetTori - will be happening down your way soon enough, so don't fret). Now that I've announced the "oh so official" dates and locations, I'd like to have another sound-out (this one slightly more official) about who *will* come. No rants about Sydney, please! I would now like to know numbers, so I can quickly estimate cost and work out accommodation quick-smart. If the date doesn't work, I *can* move it back (or forward). Remember, since there *is* a rumour floating around at the moment that Tori *might* tour Australia early next year, the Con date might be moved if Tori announces a tour at the same time the Con is on. The location ain't changing. I just need to know numbers, so if you haven't been disappointed about the fact that it's still so north-ward, *please* tell me. I don't want this Con to be just me and a couple of other buggers from Brisbane all driving down to Byron in my car. But ha! That means we can drink all the alcohol! *grin* Hope this has cleared up *any* confusion, and I can start getting clearer numbers. And remember, if you need any details at any time, the web page still exists: http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Amphitheatre/1529/toricon.html (although at the moment it's still decrepit; it will be updated once I start getting concrete information from you little buggers!) Hoping to hear from at least *1* of you, Dani. == d a n i e l l e r i n g r o s e fadagurl@torithoughts.org http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Amphitheatre/1529 "The internet is a great way to get on the net." - Bob Dole. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Jul 1998 00:00:55 PDT From: "Phillip Garcia" Subject: concert tips hey, I just scored tickets to the Show in Anehiem,CA at the Pond. So our trip to NY to see Tori is off. Nobody can afford it. So, I have 4 tickets for the Madison Square Garden show in NY on July 28th to sell. If anyone wants them, please e-mail me personally. BTW, since I'm here- in the song "Cooling", is "Peggy" the same girl who told Tori that Kevin said that she sang like a frog? If this has already been discussed I apologize. But when Tori mentions names in her songs I need to know to whom she is referring. It helps, ya know? Okay, I think she's incredibly self conscious in this song. She knows she and herold lover are fairly estranged, she knows he's going to be listening to this song, and she wants to communicate to him but she's trepidatious. Being your typical (well atypical actually, but heh) possessive Leo type, saying"Had a northern lad" could be seen asoffensive to him,so she had to qualify it..."Not exactly HAD but..." > . . . "First he loved my accent" - this leads me to think of merman. She > mentions how her current love doesn't love her or need her for her voice > alluding to the fact that maybe Eric did. "How his knees could bend"I can't help but get images of them makingl love during this part... it'slike she'sreminiscing about how they met, etc... "Hotel" I think is about Eric as well, and "met him in a hotel..." etc. does the same thing. > > "me and my molasses" - someone mentioned before that this was a little > reference to Eric anyway from "Liquid Diamonds". Did anything ever come of > that statement? Why was it said? Anyway - I'm just throwing it into my pile. Actually when she talks about molassas I think she's refering to the child.. rememberhowshe asked to see it after the miscarriage? I can imagine molasas being suitable imagery. "Me and the baby would have been fine without you..." > "Girls you've got to know when it's time to turn the page/ When you're only > wet because of the rain" - This boy wasn't doing it for her anymore. The > lines pretty much self explanatory - I hope!!!! Sheez! Not necessarily. If we think about this song in terms of being the sequel to Hey Jupiter(Personally I think it's a trilogy-- Baker, Baker, Hey Jupiter, Northern Lad), theline "If my heart's soaking wet, boy your boots can leave a mess" comesto mind. The sexual reference I think is defeinitely a double entendre, but I think she's saying she's only wet because of the rain... it'spast the point where he's doing things to hurt her in hermind, she has to learn to let go, it'sover. You can only dwell for so long. > "I guess you go to far when pianos try to be guitars" - Didn't she mention > that she always wanted to play the guitar and that Eric could and she just > couldn't. She wanted to push the relationship to the limit with what she > was used to but it just didn't quite work. Actually I think she may be talking about how he came to see her during production and said something to the affect of her constantly transforming because she was going for a new sound... it's sort of this cute reflexive aspect... talking about the album on the album. but I've never hought of it as a metaphor in thatway.. hmmm maybe more of the girl/boy dichotomoy? > > Anyway - I have kooky ideas. Take them as you will. This is how I see it. > Her love songs to Mark are just so sweet and like it was mentioned before > this is very reminiscent of "Hey, Jupiter". You're right, very different tone... maybe she has a different type of love with him, without the same feelings of bitterness or loss perhaps? kahlan :) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Jul 1998 16:26:44 +0100 From: "Northern Lass" Subject: Raspberry Swirl Video Hello all! I'm pretty much a lurker in this list, but I'm coming out to say that I saw Tori's new video last night!!! I was just channel hopping after a night at the pub and came across a channel which I *think* is called 'The Box'...I've never seen it on UK telly before, but I do recognise it from Dutch TV.... ...if you have this channel (here in the UK), I think you can call a 'phone number and request videos by quoting their given number on the screen....before Tori's video was on, I'm guessing that it's requestable (?!?) too... Anyway, the video itself is pretty strange...it involves Tori dancing around in what seemed like a lift, then around a group of folk and then onto a long banquet table on which, at the end, were wee pigs... Hmmm...as I said, I'd been at the pub earlier, so my memory isn't exactly the clearest about it all... The song itself sounds a lot more 'beefed up' than it is on the album....I managed to see Tori in The Hague a couple of months ago and the single version is very close to how she played it that night....with barrel drums and such like...
