Actually, I am a fifteen year old boy from Dallas who first became a fan of Tori when I was in the fifth grade and God came out. It was played about once a week and i bought the single. I have since purchased Little Earthquakes, Boys For Pele, and From the Choirgirl Hotel and have Under The Pink on order from my club. I understand that many people think Tori can't mean thatmuch to a "kid" who hasn't experienced the trials of life like an adult has. But I appreciate her music though I'm not a woman or an experienced adult. I think just the intricate words and encrypted meanings in her songs are enough to be marveled at. That's why I feel she's so special as a musician because you don't have to experience ordeals to appreciate her music. As a songwriter, she is extremely gifted in enthralling you to her music by the lyrics. I do know a few people who only like her b/c Raspberry Swirl, iieee, and Cruel are dancier tunes than the older ones. I like the music for the lyrics. So, while adults can appreciate her music for a different reason (such as relating to a past experience), I feel I can appreciate her music for another reason. These are just my thoughts :-) Thanx for reading, Anthony ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 06 Jun 1998 19:51:37 PDT From: "Jenn Malone" Subject: Re: rolling stone > >i always knew tori would be mainstream, but now that she's on the cover >of rolling stone, i feel like we've lost her for good. > Lost her to where? She does a live version of Spark on it and there are several interview thingies where she talks about things while sitting atop what looks to be a purple dragonfly or moth. Marisa< ok, i felt i had to respond to this...*I* for one am not too thrilled when i see the teeny-boppers at Tori shows, you know, those one's with the glitter and faerie wings that smack you when they walk by (and by the way, they aren't only at Tori shows, just about every show i have ever seen, theyre there, believe it or not, there's not as many at Tori shows as there are at other concerts)...but I dont think you can judge them worthy or not of understanding. True most of them are really young and can seem rather stupid, but girls are having babies at such early ages these days, at 12 and 13 years old now, and i'm sure quite a few have had abortions, or miscarriages....I lost my grandfather when i was 8 and that was traumatic for me.....more and more kids are experimenting with more and more drugs at more of an earlier age then ever before. I totally agreed with this post up until the "How can anyone that young understand..." because obviously if you have to ask how they can understand, then you don't understand them....most of today's youth is so very much understood, and it doesnt help them out when they are being told that they don't understand. ~~jason ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Jun 1998 10:02:08 -0400 From: "kiRa" Subject: Re: MAD !!!!! but happy b/c i found some tori singles !! hey i just wanted to let you know that tickmaster is selling a few tori items the price is decent like they have the sneak preview tour shirt for only $17!! hehe it was $25 at the show byw! kira http://www.tm-mall.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce/;display/category?cgrfnbr=129&cgmen br=6970 ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 07 Jun 1998 10:05:14 PDT From: "Capriccio 191" Subject: Atlanta/Ticketmaster/Blockbuster >PLEASE DO NOT GO TO ANY BLOCKBUSTER MUSIC LOCATION!!!! >blockbuster music IS NOT affiliated with >ticketmaster! >if you live in metro atlanta.. you have very limited choices... >- -charge by phone (404) 249-6400 >- - all publix grocery stores >- - tower records (one location, around lenox shopping center) >- - hmv records (one location, in lenox mall) Also: Ticketmaster online.... I like Hanson & Spice Girls sometimes...but I'm also a huge Tori fan AND Pantera fan and other sorts of music that I "shouldn't" like...anyway), outside appearances ARE just that--the outside--of a person. Lastly, I don't know what it's like to have an addiction, lose a child, and I haven't lost anyone to death that I feel "tied to", but I can still relate to Tori's music greatly. sometimes it's neat to have music that's "special" in the sense that no one else knows about it, but I've realized (in relation to a band that I LOVE) it is a very selfish point of view. I think it's okay that people are feeling that loss of Tori as she becomes more popular--because it's kinda natural I think--but these "kids" can (and I think, will) get something out of Tori's music and that's good. Also, this (popularity...more "mainstream" or whatever) is what Tori wants. I believe artists do what they do because they want fame, fortune, admiration, etc...otherwise they could just play local clubs and sell their cds as indie artists. I guess the way I see it is, I could whine and bitch about new fans, but why bother? I would just be hurting myself and bringing myself down--bitching sure wouldn't change anything about the fanscape at all--, so I accept it and work through my thoughts about it as they come. I just needed to ask others out there if >they have noticed this. This sounds -incredibly- elitist to me. "New/young fans can't -possibly- get the meaning out of Tori's songs that I do!" I ain't buying a word of it. The feelings in Tori's songs aren't accessible to only those over the age of 18. A 14 year-old can be raped, and understand the horrific pain inside "Me and a Gun". A 12YO can have an abusive father and feel where "Silent All These Years" is coming from. Someone just graduating high school can understand "Mother". You don't have to reach a certain age to have had some horrific experiences. And, of course, it's not particularly necessary to have experienced those events. I have never been pregnant or lost a child, but "Spark" still makes me ache inside. I don't know exactly what it's like, but I can empathize. So if someone, regardless of age, comes up and says that they're moved by Tori's music, embrace them. You have no way to judge their experiences or the depth of their feelings, and yet you're painting every one in your target group with such a broad brush. Maybe they -don't- know the pain of rape. That doesn't mean that they can't hear the pain in "Me and a Gun", and it doesn't mean that they can't understand. I am more than willing to say that there are some annoying "fans". You know, the ones that scream "play Cornflake Girl" at every concert, the ones that feel the need to shout through Tori singing "grrrrrrrrrrrrrrl" during Precious Things or cheer the second she starts singing. But being an asshole like that isn't something that's defined by age. You may notice the "teeny boppers" doing that because it reinforces your little mental stereotype and ignore all the older folks doing the same damned thing. Seek and ye shall find. I've been a Tori fan since LE came out. Does that make me "better" than anyone else? No. I'm older than some folks on this list {but certainly younger than Charlie and Mikewhy ;) }. Does that mean that I'm better than the younger members but worse than Charlie? No. We're all here because Tori's music has touched us in some way. Whether that's because we love dancing to Professional Widow or because PGY makes us crawl under our desk and cry for an hour, it doesn't matter. But this elitism just gets to me. We all complain when we are judged because of some superficial factor, and yet somehow we see folks trying to make it "acceptable". No. It's never acceptable to look at someone and say "oh, they can't possibly understand her music the way -I- do". /nad ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Jun 1998 16:34:54 EDT From: JupiterCMS@aol.com Subject: HAPPY !!!!! A lot of the album was very easy to swallow, despite the controversy over the "changed Tori" and such, like Pandora's Aquarium, Liquid Diamonds, and Raspberyy Swirl (believe or not). However, one song that did not sit well with me even before I had ever heard it was Black Dove. One of my all time favorites is Black SWAN, and I thought maybe Black Dove was like a little sister: she was trying to be like Black Swan, and didn't quite meet the original standards, but gets all the attention anyway b/c she's younger and cuter. And in a way she did: Black Swan was never released on an album, and is almost never performed live. And with Black Dove, I was like "What's the message?" Well, I recently got the Tori AP magazine. And I read the article, and when she talks about the miscariage, she said something like "It was three days before Christmas. The doctors had just told us we were out of the woods." Now this is obviously a parallel to the lines "By the woods, by the woods, by the woods, etc." And I was wondering in this article, did the doctors tell her she was out the woods meaning 'It's too late, there's nothing left to do,' or 'You're out of the scary part, where you have to be really cautious'? Now my high school was considering doind this musical 'Into the Woods' at some point, and I had to analyze it for drama class, and it turns out that the woods turn out to be a place of danger. I don't know what exactly she means...Any thoughts? Hello all EWF's of all ages, I am 15 years old. Does that make me a teeny bopper? Perhaps it does, in the eyes of you older and wiser fans that have been around longer. But it certainly doesn't mean that I can't enjoy and understand Tori's music on a deep emotional level... I know there are people my age for whom good music is something that doesn't take too much thought. I meet people my age every day that wouldn't understand a lot of Tori songs. But there are also grown-ups that wouldn't understand Tori's music, or her message. I suppose what I'm trying to say is that age doesn't matter *that* much when it comes to experiencing Tori. No, I've never been through a bad break-up, or even a good break-up. I've never lost a child or been raped or had anything overly traumatic happen to me. But I can still hear what Tori is saying and get where it's coming from. I didn't lose a loved one in the Holocaust, does that mean I can't watch Schindler's List and understand it? Art is art, and emotion is emotion. Perhaps BfP may be more poignant for those of you that have lost your left arm in a break-up. And I'm sure for those women that have had miscarriages, Spark is difficult to listen to. But is it my right to say that no one can understand Frog On My Toe if they haven't lost a grandfather like I have? (I'm sure most of us have... I was just making a point.) I know it's discouraging to see girls in loads of cheap eyeshadow and skin-tight lime green tank tops telling you how much they love Tori. But you don't know what they've been through or why they listen to Tori. I got into BfP because it was like my only friend when my real-life best friends had ditched me. What I'm saying is we've all been through pain and we all can appreciate art. It's possible that some of these girls have no idea what Tori's trying to say, or what any of it means. They just like to listen to the nice woman's soothing voice. But give them a chance. And hey, no matter what, it's more money for Tori, right? :o) Just remember that while there may not be many people as young as I am that like Tori, the ones that do must have some idea what's going on. Love, Sara/Polyethylene keep all surfaces clean P.S. Yes, BfP is my favorite album too. It's more of an experience than an album, it's like a friend. For me, at least. I cant' remember where I read it, there's so many tori articles out now, but they said something of her people on this tour for close to 2 years!!!!!!!!! that can't be possible, but wouldnt' it be great!!! I read that Tori is more happy on the road this time around than she ever has, and even before she LOVED to tour. (obviously), maybe it's because she has her hubby with her!!!!!!!!! Guten Tag, A while back, someone posted the chords to Toodles Mr. Jim. I accidentally deleted the post, which is sad because TMJ (hehe... not the jaw disease or whatever, the song...) is one of my absolute favorite girls. Such a happy song about death, I don't know it really touches me. Anyhoo, could whoever posted the chords post them again? Or e-mail them expressly to me (derelict@netnitco.net)? Thanks, I would really love to learn to play it. Now my high school was considering doind this musical 'Into the Woods' at some point, and I had to analyze it for drama class, and it turns out that the woods turn out to be a place of danger. I don't know what exactly she means...Any thoughts? >> After a pregnant woman passes her first trimester (3 months), she's "out of the woods", menaing that the chances of losing the baby or having complicaitons are not as great, something like 55 % the first trimester, and 15% after the first trimester... And the review was brief but half way intelligent. Anybody want it in full, let me know. I have to tell you all that I stoppped reading the digest for a while because all the negative engergy in it was upsetting me (FtCGH is awful, dont MAKE yourself like it, the songs are annoying, etc, etc). I understand that everyone has a right to their own opionion and sharing is cathartic--we can all learn from each other, but jeez, it all just gave me a headache. I am SO happy the thread is back to interpreting lyrics and reviews that might be a bit more seasoned by time. You guys have resored my faith!!! Anybody hear about Tori playing at Summerfest in Milwaukee? Is it true? Something that I noticed that made me smile: Tori does a Y Kant Tori Read-style "hey" a couple times (cant remember exactly where--Ill find out if you like). Also, anyone draw a connection between "lollipop gestapo" from Hotel and the "lollipop girls" mentioned in Y Kant? I think its in the song "Heartattack at 23". I dont have the CD with me. I mean, the lollipop girls to me would have on "gestapo" boots and belong to a "organization" as frightening and destructive (*almost*) as the Nazi version. The lollipops might be hookers or kids on the street, waving to the boy with the gun in his hand...hey...
