I think Boys for Pele is the most incredible album I have ever heard. It is so eclectic. It is so perfect.I like it SOOOOOO much more than the other ones. It's the leader. It reminds me of a lost Beatles album, ressurected by a latter-day chanteuse. It's a msical bible. The artwork is so brilliant, I think it is embarrassing for people to actually say it is trashy. It's comfortable. This album sounds the least like she's nervous to me. It sounds like she went into a studio and put her feet up and wrote some brilliantly flippant and emotional songs all at the same time. I know that there will always be someone who just doesn't like it, but perhaps it's an aquired taste. Sometimes people aren't willing to aquire one. I used to HATE Boys for Pele. Now, it is NEVER not in the cd player. I could go on for hours. Will the Boys for Pele fans please show some support for it? It is a classic. It's timeless. It's very surrealistic in an approachable way. In an outer space on earth way. A southern outer space. I would buy the album just for the artwork if the music wasn't so incredible. The music is so visual. Every song has a place that it takes me to. I've shared and traded these places with other fans who experienced the same travels in their imagination. I am definately one for allowing everyone their own opinion, but I definately can't help but question Tori fans who don't like it? It is perfect. I never get tired of it. There are so many layers. Here's the basics: Tickets go on sale at 10am on Saturday, 06 June 1998. Tickets are $21.50 lawn and $28.50 reserved. No clue what kind of charges TicketMaster tacks on top of that, I'd plan for $5 or so per ticket {more if you plan to call and charge your tickets}. As with Tori's last show at Chastain, coolers will not be allowed. There is still no information on when the 18 August 1998 show at Chastain goes on sale. I would stick around your TicketMaster outlet for about a half hour to see if they go on sale that day when the first show sells out. You can find TicketMaster outlets all over. Many BlockBuster Musics have them, as do Publix grocery stores. Don't bother camping out 'cause there's a lottery. What's a lottery? A half hour before tickets go on sale, the TicketMaster folks come out and you draw a number out of a hat. The person who's lucky enough to draw #1 buys their tickets first, #2 goes second, etcetcetc. They do this specifically to discourage camping out for tickets. Oh, one other thing. If you're in metro Atlanta, tickets for the HORDE festival go on sale on Saturday at 10am also. Be prepared! Silent all these Years is probably the best of them all (to bad it took the RAINN re-release to get it on the charts). This was probably the strongest single to hit the airwaves in many years and was simply to advanced to the general public. Cornflake Girl struck me as very radio friendly and I was surprised it had such a short life, both on air and the video. But again, despite the initial simplicity of this song, it again was a little too deep for the mass public. God gave Tori "shock value" (especially the vid) and I had a hard time appriciating it at first, until I understood the underlying comic stand-up routine that is going on within the words. I was not at all surprised it was not accepted. Caught a Lite Sneeze did not impress me much as a single. I like the song, but felt that Hey Jupiter or Talula would have been a better lead-off. Sneeze was so abstract that people felt rejected by it before they had begun to understand it. this is a major shame, cause the single kicks ass. Spark is probably the best choice Tori ever made in selecting a *first*. There is enough strangeness in the opening lines to hook you into listening to the rest. This is why it is airplay friendly at this time. The words are half decipherable and the melody stays somewhat consistent. And Tori is keeping the abstracts to a minimum with this. Yes, there are hidden messages throughout it, but they don't distract from the song itself. This has to be Tori's most powerful *first* single since Silent. The big Picture for a single. hmm, I'd have to give that a lot of thought. I would have thought "Cool on your Island" would be more radio friendly. But I was locked in a place in my life I never could have heard it in the first place. These are observations, not ratings of each. As noted before, almost all these songs hold a place in my heart and to say one is good and one is bad is beyond me. hell, I can't bring myself to state my 'favorite' because that changes constantly. I do see Jackies Strength becoming a heavy hitter. Totally Tori at her most simplistic (at first listen), catchy phrasing, etc. In fact, I can't wait to see the video to see how tori puts her mental image into a visual medium. So instead of a rating piece, I offer an opinion essay instead. How do you guys do it? Grade the different songs--what is your comparison base? Do you grade on a curve comparing to earlier and/or later works of Tori's or do you go outside of the lady to find comparisons? Quite frankly, I don't hear Jewel or anyone else besides "Attila the Honey with her all man band". Tori is a rare, unique songtress. her true genius will be found after she dies, just as it has been with the great artists. More than one of the great composers/artists were humiliated and degraded in life, yet posthumoustly were honored for their many contributions to society. At least Tori doesn't have to starve waiting to be recognized. /opinions here Fairy Blessings, Bethey I'm OK when everything's not OK cause it's the Fairies Revenge they say and I have always been a Fairy *************************************************************** I gave my life to become the person I am. Tori Amos >From The Choirgirl Hotel (Atlantic) Tori Amos has followed her muse to the end of some pretty thin branches, documenting her soul's perpetual churning. So far fans have happily crawled out there with her. Little Earthquakes (1991), Under the Pink (1994), and Boys for Pele (1996) made a pop goddess of the classically trained Amos despite her complicated arrangements and daring, abstract, lyrical style. Amos calls her songs "girls," saying the brilliant collages come to her as if by chance, blending snatches of time and personal scenes and emotions into art that does not necessarily need to be understood to be believed. But it is Amos' own struggle for comprehension that informs the more earthbound sound of her fourth solo record, From the Choirgirl Hotel. Written in the aftermath of a miscarriage and inspired by her struggle to embrace life again, this latest release finds Amos turning her elegant anger and bitter sorrow to the ground, rotting for truth in rhythm-heavy songs that ultimately accept life's contradictions. Amos recorded live with a studio band this time out, and the tasteful playing of Steve Caton (guitar), Matt Chamberlain (drums), and Beck bassist Justin Meldal-Johnsen proves a supple and strong complement to her aggressive, fluid keyboard work. Throughout the record Amos challenges the wisdom of fate, the politics of sacrifice, and the incendiary nature of beautiful religions. The musical accompaniment runs from acoustic to electronica, but the whole is infused with urgency and grandeur through the tumbling, percussive piano playing that is her hallmark. The album's first track, "Spark," is a classic Amos piece. "She's convinced she could hold back a glacier/But she couldn't keep Baby alive" she sings with eerie calm, as creeping ivy lines of piano and electric guitar intertwine and escalate, finally prodding a violent response to the deep feeling of vulnerability. "Liquid Diamonds" also covers familiar but interesting ground, with the sizzling percussion chugging like a freight train in the background as Amos' piano trips delicately, and at times dissonantly across the tune. The distorted, sexually thorny rose gardens depicted in "Raspberry Swirl," "Cruel," and "Hotel" contrast with simple love songs such as "Northern Lad." "I guess you go to far/When pianos try to be guitars" she sings with a quiver, slowly stretching the bittersweet ballad into an aching, tremulous epic by the tune's end. "Jackie's Strength" is another sentient piece, a photograph of a Sixties childhood and Seventies youth set to strings by the Sinfonia of London. >From David Cassidy lunch boxes to the virgin who always gets backstage, Amos views her girlish era through the prism of Jackie Kennedy, keeping a brave face in the hardest of times. Some of the lyrics here will be maddeningly obscure to those who prefer things neatly laid out, but one certainly doesn't have to grasp the intent to enjoy the lush sound and the record's emotional content. These "girls" are lovely and wicked and smart, and Amos is at her best in their company. - -Robin Myrick well thats it for now hope you enjoyed the article alex - ------------------------------------------------------------ The Tori Amos Corner http://www.concentric.net/~nephilim/tori.html ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 04 Jun 1998 10:13:01 -0400 From: Stephanie Handley Subject: Re: Cooling lyrics I have one more, so I'll snip to just that one, other than that, I my ears agree with boy wonder. boy wonder wrote: > >So then I've walked up to like -----so then love walked up to like/said i > know that you don't like me much/let's go for a ride I hear: So then love walked out for like Said I know that you don't like me much Let's go for a ride It's similar to when your feelings change in a relationship, and one suddenly realizes she is no longer in love with him/her, but just likes him/her. "I'd prefer to love you, but like walked into my heart instead, for some reason, and I really don't want to just like you, I wan't to love you." Just mvho, thanks for listening.
