I am pretty sure I just made a few enemies. I didn't mean to offend anyone's taste. Even my most unfavorite Tori songs are MUCH more beautiful than anyone else's. (wince) I also dislike Raspberry Swirl. It's very minimalistic and not very impressive compared to most songs of that nature. It's very repetitive and a tear wells up in my eye at the thought of a bunch of prepubbesant girls dancing in some little 16 and up club to it. It features Tori pretty heavily, which is why I'm sharing it with you all now... Anyway at the point I remember, I was being told by someone that something apocalyptically bad was going to happen. There was this church, or old chamber of great importance, and some terrible forces were at work to destroy it. I think it was adjacent to where I was living, either that or I was able to monitor it in my head as I was doing other things, because there were two scenes going at once. In the one scene I could see the chamber, and there was a small white dove flying around inside the chamber. But it began to develop a small red (blood) spot on its belly, which grew larger and larger. Meanwhile I was packing up several days worth of clothes. I knew I had to go out and 'fight' something but wasn't sure what it was ... my friends were pounding on my door to get me to pack up and get out more quickly. So I grabbed socks, underwear, shirts, skirts, etc ... and in one dresser drawer, I had a bunch of what were kind of like action figures but with different symbols from the Bible/various religions. I picked one with four horses ... and maybe another, but I don't remember the second one. Meanwhile, in the other chamber, the dove had died and the place was filling rapidly with sand. I knew the next step was to blast the place with heat so the sand would melt and then re-solidify, making the chamber completely useless. I left my place and (pause for more suspension of disbelief) Jordan Catalano (you know, from My So-Called Life) was waiting at the curb in his red car to take me where I needed to go. He was a bit peeved that I'd taken so long. On the way I took some notes on recent events and when they had occurred. I wasn't even sure where we were going, but some stuff skipped ahead and I was inside a theater, getting ready to see a Tori Amos show. They had a bunch of stuff at the merchandising booth I hadn't seen before, and I bought this canister with her picture on it. I went into the auditorium and there she was, chatting with some of the people who had gotten in early. I asked her if I could get her to autograph a couple of things, but all I had was the canister and the notes I'd been taking earlier. When I sent to my seat to set my things down and get them, I turned around and she was gone. Steve Caton was there, so I spoke to him for a few moments. I had opened the canister, and it turned out to be this very special hair conditioner with stress-relieving aromatherapy and all kinds of goodies. Anyway I brought the notes down to him and chatted with him about Tori, and he signed the notes at the bottom, and then began reading them over. Then he said something really surprising. Something like, "Yea, all this looks about right." I said "You mean the events and dates and such?" And he said "yes, we all knew this stuff was happening. You should mention it when Tori comes back. She gets approached by so many fans, but if you let her know right away you know about these things, she'll talk to you. You know, wear a [something I don't remember] or make a symbol of Isis with your hands, anything like that to let her know." Caton and I chatted some more, about not much, but Tori didn't come back... and somewhere in there I woke up. Now I know this is already laden with a lot of Tori imagery: a dove, the horses, the cathedral. I don't know. In my just-woke-up-frame of mind I'm thinking about the four horses: 1) in "Winter" 2) in "Horses" 3) in "Liquid Diamonds" ("for those on horseback..."). Does anyone remember any horses on Pink? Does something happen when she writes about horses for a fourth time? I don't know what any of it means. But I did think maybe it would be a funny/cool idea if the merch booths at Tori shows sold her current kind of hair dye. :) Any clues are welcome in personal email. I know this dream sounds way out there, but I have a few of these a year and they're often important in some way. Thanks, Beth - -- "Is food your favorite obsession?" I ask. Amos' eyes gleam wickedly. "No," she says, grinning. "It's just a smokescreen for my favorite obsession." "Which would be?" She takes a perfect pause. Now I am busy working on this Encyclopedia I wanted to say that the skeleton is fairly ready. My encyclopedia now contains all of her albums, all of her songs, and some important persons in her life. The project is still far from ready but I intend to 'publish' the encyclopedia either this or next month. This message is however meant especially for Website owners. A lot of information in the Tori Amos Encyclopedia will be taken from the existing Websites. The idea is that the Tori Amos Encyclopedia should be the first stop on your Tori Amos Web Travels. This means that I will not _copy_ information, but rather give some basic info and then link to the website where you may find more information. For instance, the subject 'Bootlegs' will contain a link to Jason's excellent Bootleg Discography. As the 'owner' of the Tori Amos Encyclopedia I would like to make contact with Website owners who are willing to send me updates on their Websites. I obviously have time nor money to check all Tori Amos sites on a regular basis (local calls are not free here, I've heard you people in the US being more fortunate in that respect), and you will of course be rewarded with traffic to your site. The basic idea I have in mind for the Tori Amos Encyclopedia is that it will be a quick reference guide for starting surfers. It's much easier to find information on a subject when you have an alphabetized site than if you have to plow through search-engines. Hopefully, by next year, this vision will be fully operational. I became a fan ever since FtCH came out. Yea, I'm THAT new. :-) >From the choirgirl hotel is my favorite Tori album. My second favorite is Under the Pink. My third favorite is Little Earthquakes, and my least favorite is Boys for Pele. MY LITTLE EARTHQUAKES ALBUM REVIEW - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I give Little Earthquakes a 9. I like this album a lot! My favorite song on it is "Crucify." It's such a cool song! I love it, almost as much as I love "iieee" on FtCH. Little Earthquakes is enjoyable and easy to listen to. It's not heart-wrenching, it's calm. Tori's voice is soothing and quiet on this album. It's almost like the calm before the storm. This album reflects a lot of Tori's past experiences, I think, and she elaborates on the feelings she experiences most of the time. The only song I don't like at all is "Leather." Why did Tori put this song on such a good-sounding album? Overall, Little Earthquakes is a wonderful debut album. It really shows the gentler side of Tori, the more subtle emotional side. Little Earthquakes is, like many of you said, a must-have debut album. But Little Earthquakes is still not better than Under the Pink, in my opinion. Maybe it's because I heard Under the Pink before Little Earthquakes?!? MY BOYS FOR PELE ALBUM REVIEW - ----------------------------------------------------------- I give Boys for Pele a 5. I can sum up how I like BfP in two words: I don't. Boys for Pele is Tori's worst album, I think. It's just so boring! Tori could have done better! As much as I love Tori's voice, Boys for Pele is just not a good exhibition of it at all. Though I must confess I like "Talula", "Horses", and "Blood Roses", the rest of the songs on this album are all trashy. It's like a sideline album. It should be kept in the shadows, available only to people who like the style Tori portrays on this album. Somebody once said that on each album, Tori is like a different person, conveying different feelings. I must say that the person Tori is on BfP is a not very good one, and the feelings she portrays on this album aren't very strong. They're so weak. Maybe that's why I don't like it. I do like how she mingles the harpischord in with a few of the songs, but the whole feeling of Boys for Pele is not very enjoyable to me. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I hope no one will take anything I've said personally or in a bad way. I'm just stating my opinions, and even if they aren't your own, I have stated the truth. Don't get me wrong - Boys for Pele is a good album...it's just not for me. I adore FtCH and UtP, and LE is right up there. But BfP is just not on my good side. Well, thanks a bunch for reading what I thought about these two albums. And I'd like to thank everyone who gave me their opinions on Boys for Pele! THANKS SO MUCH, EVERYBODY! I think maybe the reason why you may not like Boys for Pele that much is becuase you haven't had that much time to listen to it, especially sine you've been a tori fan for less than a month. Boys for Pele is by far my favorite album, and full of emotion. Its lyrics are so abstract that you may not have had ample time to analyze them, but I think you'll find them to be some of Tori's best if you give the album more than a few days. I got to thinking about the song Hotel. It could possibly be about Trent (but could also be Eric). She says "you were wild, where are you now...." Also- Cruel could have soome references to him. The beginning lines "so don't give me respect don't give me a piece of your preciousness. flaunt all she's got in our old neighbourhood..." couls be about Courtney Love coming in to take Trent from her. "celebrate your top ten in the charts of pain" Trent's pain-filled music is often in the top ten.. hmmm.... just some thoughts. Looks like Tori's really trying to make us look for references on this record if they ARE there.... you're so sure you can save every hair on my chest... shawn.the.little.masochist ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Jun 1998 01:09:04 +0200 From: "Mischa" Subject: Re: 1-word descriptions of Tori's albums Here's what grabs me when I think about it... Subject: Hearing new things every listen. Hi everyone, most of you will think I am making sense of nothing, but here it goes. Well I was just listening to Jackies Strength last night and I had also just finished reading an article about the "Arkansas Masscare" and I mean it was a lof ot intake on the situation and then I heard Jackies Strength and even though that song was recorded before the massacre it kind of reminded me a lot of that because Tori says, "mama laid me down on ym front lawn and prayed for Jackie's strength" and "shots rang out the police came" and it reminded me so mcuh of that because in the massacre the teacher shaded one of the children and died for her, and I don't know, it was just weird and the song I saw in a whole new way, but I probably am just being dumb. Oh, by the way the article was in the July artice of Seventeen, it's pretty informative. If the jacket had nicer pictures of Tori I would definitely like the album much better overall. But PLEASE - don't get me wrong here, guys - the music on BfP is beautiful! I heard that Bells for Her was the sequel to Me and a Gun if that helps at all, so I guess, I've made sense of the song that it was her post-rape feelings and it sounds like she in the song is trying to help other people, "you don't need my voice girl you have your own," demonstrates that (imho) because she is saying don't tell your experiences thorugh me, don't live my experience, but speak out for yourself, build up the courage and do it. Im a little surprized at anyone who compares Tori to Jewel. First, being a musician myself, I can say that the music in NL is ten times more complex than anything Jewel can ever dream of writing. And as for the lyrics, I invite you to compare these two: "I break the yolks and make a smiley face, I kinda like it in my brand new place." "I feel the west in you and I feel it falling apart too" I guess, for me, comparing Tori to Jewel is a little like comparing Good Housekeeping to e.e. cummings. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 01 Jun 1998 19:38:24 -0500 From: Douglas Bailey Subject: Raspberry Swirl nickname@movi.com.ar wrote: #Well, if you like techno music with a Disco reminiscense. Why do you expect an album to sound pretty much the same, from the first song to the last? Me, I love Raspberry Swirl, and I think it's one of the best songs on the CD. I didn't realize Tori could write a song with THAT much energy and verve. It kicks butt, and I can't wait to get out into a club somewhere and dance to it (if they'd ever play it...sigh). I don't like rumors and want to point out that #1) Tori has said in several interviews there was nothing more than a song between her and Trent, and #2)Tori has said that these songs (with the exception of the miscarrige references) are not really about her. They are "girls in a troupe with really nothing to do with me. Sometimes they let me sing alto with them", so references about CL don't really apply in this case. Just trying to correct an incorrect thread. Subject: Cover Artwork okay, another post from me, I am going to kind of explain imho the artwork on each album including YKTR. okay. YKTR-She's in a way rebelling against what she's been taught and how she's been brought up. LE-She's showing how she was confined for so long and now she's finally coming out of her "box" and using her voice (emotionally) UtP-It's very calm and relaxed, simple, not much going on, shoes pure beauty in simplicity, kind of shows she's relaxed and relieved after expressing herself truthfully (in LE) BfP-She's nurturing her darkside, and nurturning the unloved, expressing a part of her that everyone has, but most are not willing to let it come out and speak. FtCGH-I think as someone else said that it very much reflects Playboy Mommy and it's about a whole different her because of her miscarriage *and* marriage and as her just pening up a whole new world to herself. Sorry about all this.
