I was just going to reply to the "iieee" thread by saying that although I love that song, "Raspberry Swirl" is a big favourite with me. :) I love that song to death, it's really sexy, but gritty at the same time. Yay! But it does NOT mean it has SOLD 500,000 copies, it means it has SHIPPED 500,000 copies. Basically what this means is that 500,000 copies of the album have been sent to stores nationwide to be sold. The only way to have a real figure of how many copies the album has really sold, is to get the figures from these past 3 weeks (from SoundScan or Billboard) and add them up. If anyone has member access to Billboard Online, I think you can get these figures doing a search at this site. I would really love to have this kind of info! Just wanted to make this clear. I like that song too, but the song that I'm really hooked on right now is "Liquid Diamonds". I like how the song sounds so fluid. The lyrics really wrench me, when she sings "surrender then start your engines/you'll know quite soon what my mistake was" and "I hear she still grants forgiveness/although I willingly forgot her". . . also when she she sings "Iguess I'm an underwater thing so I guess I can't take it personally" the he-he after the verse sounds like a giggle, who knows?. The way Tori sings is melancholic, but not quite depressing. I guess I'm moved by this song (and really, all of FtCGH, for that matter) 'cause i had a miscarriage in September, so a couple of song, especially Liquid Diamonds, really gets me all worked up. LD just brings back to me the sense of watching and experiencing something slip and float away (not to get too gross or confessional). I just think this song is beautiful. So many of you probably haven't had the same experience, but there's still a universal sense of loss. (However, I like Raspberry Swirl - it makes me laugh and dance, just what I need!!!) Thanks for bearing with my cathartic ramblings!!! Any other thoughts on LD? Though it DID take a while for the song to grow on me, it's now one of my favorites. (My other favs are Spark; Cruel; Raspberry Swirl; Iiiee; Jackie's Strength; Hotel; and recently Liquid Diamonds.) I don't know why I like that song. But it's much better than Northern Lad, I think. It's got more substance. But what can I say? I know we're dying and there's no sign of a parchute. A little crazy, so naked. I've said it before, I'll say it again, even when I had just the upteenth gen promo tape, this was my favorite. She calls to me and takes me down into her depths. I try not to find much meaning in this, I believe that the words are more part of the instrumental than something significant. Sweet Saliva probably sounded pretty and that's why it's there. The musical depths enrapture me, hypnotize me, entrance me. Tori can make a scream sound so beautiful. Why can't it be? fb, beth >> I think in response to that I will say that Tori can make a scream so beautiful as Jim Morrison could. It was pure passion. Lately, I'm beginning to compare Tori as a Goddess and Led Zeppelin as God. Zep is God because they never actually WANTED to be Gods, you know? With this album, I like it because it's what I call the "practical" album. BFP was VERY emotionally taunting. That album just rips me apart...it has an invisible "Warning! Caution!" sticker on it. UTP was most definitely an impressionist painting. Little Earthquakes was a very natural album. This one is superficial in the most wonderful way. Now don't get me wrong, my friends. I'm not saying Tori, her presence, or her music is superficial...but this one i feel is so down to earth...it's wonderful. what's so different about her is that instead of triggering the SAME emotions over and over with each forthcoming album, she discovers something different each time......like Led Zeppelin...they have at least one song for EVERY existing emotion. Tori is great (as in the biblical- style of "great"), but she has so much room left to grow and expand...and she's fully capable of it. One of the reasons I love her so much is because I'm watching her grow, as person, as I, in my teens am growing as well....symmetry. (: I wonder if the references to Tori's mother being dead are just another case of Tori and Kate Bush being confused. Kate's mother passed away while she was working on The Red Shoes, which is when Tori was working on UtP, so I wonder if this is what's up. I agree. It's like all of the other songs have something in common, that makes them sound.. not alike or similar, kind of like sisters. Like me and my sisters. At first sight, we're completely different, that's what most people say when they see us for the first time, then when they really watch us closely, they can tell we're sisters but we're still different. Because each of us has a different hair color, a different face shape, but there's something.. that makes us look like sisters. So if we compared it to ftcgh, RS would be like the songs' best friend. I don't know. What do you all think? Alicia ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V3 #198 *************************************
