Hi Guys.. A fuller account will follow (when I recover, 'K?) - but it was a very good opening night - some problems with Caton's levels, I believe, but other than that, things went pretty smoothly. Good news - the Devlin's aren't bad! They're the best kind of support act - inoffensive, play a short, rock set, and then leave. Can't ask for anything more! :) Tori was brilliant as ever, and the set list was pretty familar, with the inclusion on Raspberry Swirl (INCREDIBLE live - like nothing I've ever heard before) being the only real new song. No "Crucify" yet, which is a surprise. Couple of comments Tori made from the stage.. "I love you guys - the way you talk - I don't understand a word of it, but you could talk to me all day!" We had a couple of stupid hecklers, but she dealt with those in her usual fashion - very funny. Merchandise: Grey T-shirt - small Plugged picture on the back, strange, segmented picture on the front. Black T-shirt - Cover of the UK Promo on the front (with the piano wire), and then the dates on the back. Raspberry Swirl necklace - as ever. Poster - cool, tigerskin thing NO tour programmes as yet, they haven't been printed. Caton said before the gig that Tori's started throwing in a few curved balls now, and things seem to be going pretty well. They performed a few bars of "Do It Again" in soundcheck, although this didn't materialise during the actual set. .. More later. Can someone please point them out to me? I love the song, though reading the lyrics leaves me a bit confused. This song reminds me of the Rolling Stones' work from the 1970s...I think they could have done a wonderful cover of it back then. Now? Ugh. Perhaps they could play the instruments while Tori sings the lyrics...now that would be a treat! BTW, I'm a new subscriber to the list, glad to find one that stays reasonably on-topic ... Does anyone else think those pics of Tori in Q magazine make her look a lot like the lead singer of Garbage? (not that that's a bad thing... *g* ) Speaking of Garbage, I'd love to hear them cover Cruel. I always think of them when I listen to it... I simply cannot agree with people who say FTCH sucks. Sure it's different, but you can't force an artist to keep making the same kind of music for her entire career. Instead, I feel you should embrace every work on its own merits. I love Tori's new album. I was a bit taken aback by the graphics, like some others here, but I've learned to really like them. All comments on the lyric booklet and promotional items aside, I think FTCH is an excellent album. I rank all of Tori's albums evenly, each with it's particular strong points, and FTCH excels in demonstrating Tori's vocal and songwriting musicianship. I'd always heard she was going to use the piano less often, and that seems to have come true with this CD. Heck, are there any keyboards at all in Cruel? I can't hear them. But regardless, this has enabled Tori to show what she can do writing music for other instruments, like the saxaphone, symbols, etc. And her voice! What a voice! She really shows it in Northern Lad, and at the end of Pandora's Aquarium. I'm not sure she's ever used her voice as a true musical instrument in that fashion before. Frankly, I hope her next album is filled with such elaborate vocals, stretching her voice to its limits. >From listening to Raspberry Swirl, I think she's taken a tip or two from BT (or whomever). This is an excellent dance song, reminding me of some of her BFP singles. Black Dove used to be my fave, but this one is growing on me so quickly....But then again, there's Pandora's Aquarium. It has such a jazzy, night-club feel...it makes me want to order a martini and watch her perform, amidst the cigarette smoke and dim lighting provided by table-top candlelight... I love the "techno" sounds in Hotel...absolutely terrific contrast to the rest of the song's more traditional passages. These lyrics are from a song she wrote long ago, that she now refers to as "Married Man". Here is a recent relevant quote from the Washington Post article: "Tori Amos, Local Legend" At 34, the Singer Deals With Love, Loss, and a New Band by Richard Harrington Washington Post Staff Writer May 17, 1998 [...] Cradling a bottle of Evian in the restaurant at the Four Seasons Hotel - only a block from where she maintained a long residency at the Marbury House's Lion Gate Taverne - Amos recalls "Married Man," a song written in her early teens. "'I'm too young for a man but I'm too old for a boy so can't we just pretend that I'm older than I am but then, only little girls pretend... Married man, stop pulling me closer married man, I could be your daughter you know you have the best of both worlds.' " "That makes me cry when I think about it," Amos says. - -- Ken Tough Cornwall, U.K. Home of the Choirgirl Hotel ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 May 1998 09:33:06 EDT From: BlueMeani3 Subject: Rambling FTCH musings from a newbie who initially got rejected by the list owner I honestly expected much more from this album; I don't feel the idea of Tori experimenting with new sounds and studio trickery to enhance her songwriting style as opposed to distracting from it was fully realized on this album nor does it live up to its potential. It is, however, an extremely intruiging album that has reached its way to my CD player countless times since May 5th. Ironically, after all the discussion of Tori's new 'plugged' sound and dance influence, the songs that really *got* me where the ones where Tori simply allowed her awe-inspiring musicianship and sultry voice to shine. Spark: This is one of the few songs where I can see the claims about the album being sonically similar to Radiohead's 'OK Computer' getting justified. The song itself is very strong and the lyrics rank among the most arresting on the album, but the band is simply too soft to really leave an impact on me. If she's going to cause a commotion about integrating a band into 'choirgirl hotel', I say she should have gone the full nine. But, regaurdless of my personal yearning to see Tori rage PJ Harvey-style, it's a lovely song and a wonderful opener. Cruel: The Peter Gabriel-esque baroque feel of this one would normally send me running for the hills, but her vocal performance on this track is so incredibly sexy that it's near impossible not to be sucked into it despite the dorky backdrop music. It is, however, reminicent of Paula Cole in a somewhat dark mood and that is an extremely frightening thought. Black Dove (January): A subtle number that eventually creeps its way into your consciousness. The blunted piano evokes 'Bells For Her' off UTP, but it's much more melodically advanced and it's simply exquisite when the band kicks in on the chorus. The lyrics are very cryptic, though, and it's most likely another hopelessly insular Tori song that's going to provoke oodles of arguments among Toriphiles because she left so many oppertunities for the listener to fill in the holes in the story. One of my favorites on the album. Rasberry Swirl: I'm personally thrilled that Tori has begun to experiment with her songwriting style and different sounds since I'm always going to advocate spiritual and artistic growth, but this song came very close to making be reconsider my philosophy. The 'dance' beat is bland and could be found in practically and old house record that stinks, while the lyrics are somewhat dizzying. It's truly a shame when someone writes a song so weak that the author has to distract the listener from the song, and it's even more devestating when someone as gifted as Tori does this. Jackie's Strength: Hands down one of the most beautiful songs Tori's ever written. The strings are remarkably arranged on this song and the lyrics are among Tori's best. Favorite line: 'Stickers licked on lunchboxes worshipping David Cassidy/Yeah, I mooned him once on Donna's box/She's stille in recovery.' Definitely my favorite song on the album; it was such a relief to see Tori revert back to her old self for awhile. iieee: Saying that I appreciate this song on any level would be a very hollow claim. Although it is the one song on the album where the electronic influence melds with Tori's classic style smoothly, it sounds forced and fails to develop anything worth listening to a second time. It's monotonus and boring. I can begin to see where Tori's detractors are coming from with their opinions after listening to this song. Liquid Diamonds: Her biggest misstep on the album is this song. Too unpleasant and bold to send you into a trance and too messy to be considered an actual song, it meanders for awhile and then thankfully goes away never to be heard of or thought of again. The lyrics are intruiging but the song is light years away from doing them justice. She's Your Cocaine: Again, this is the result of Tori not knowing how to rage properly. It's a bit like a tune from a Disney movie that took a wrong turn down Crossdressers Road. I've always felt that Tori was at her best when she unknowingly took on what was considered taboo or risque material, but it backfires big time when she consciously tries to be shocking. The song itself isn't much to speak of; a 'rock' melody that's already been chewed up and spit out by innumerable musicians before her and a weak sonic backdrop that makes the song even more unbearable. It's apparent that Tori has some parts of her that know how to rock out like nothing you've ever seen before, but if this song is any indictation, she's losing them. Northern Lad: Definitely one of the most dissapointingly bland songs on the album; the melody is shaky and never really gets anywhere while Tori mumbles the whirling lyrics. It does, however, contain a classic Tori line: 'Girls, you gotta know when it's time to turn the page/When you're only wet because of the rain.' Hotel: A very ameturish 'electronica' influenced song that proudly displays a complete disregaurd for the integrity of the genre. Avoid at all costs. Playboy Mommy: The highlight of the latter part of the album. The smoky lounge feel is a nice break from the disastrous experimental tracks that preceed it. The vocals on this track are utterly delicious. A definite gem. Pandora's Aquarium: Tori's voice on this isn't stirring nor is it tolerable; it's unbelievably annoying and distracts from the rest of the song, which is mediocre Tori material. The lyrics, however, lean dangerously close to being self-parodying. Frankly, I think Tori should perhaps learn a little more about electronic music before delving into it so boldly. She clearly operates on what simple and derivative ancient house beats mainstream culture has fed her, and it doesn't flatter her writing at all. The album is at its best when Tori compromises her 'plugged' ambitions for the sake of writing a great song. And, for the third time, she needs to look to Polly Harvey or Bjork to realize what she's trying to accomplish with tracks like Cruel and She's Your Cocaine; she's much to reserved in most of her songs to let the beast run free and she's definitely at her most gripping when she sacrifices her ambition and simply emotes. She might be becoming a tad too elusive and vauge for her own good as far as lyrics go. Is it worth giving up accessibility and coherence just to prove how clever you are? I'd personally love to listen to a few Tori songs where I'm able to understand what she's singing about on a first listen. And I'm well aware that I'm going to be flamed like the pillars of Hell for sharing this. On a more positive note, she's definitely reclaimed her title as one of music's most compelling women with this album and I'm looking forward to seeing where she moves to from here. It'll no doubt be facinating. To save an argument, I am in actuality a very avid Tori fan and I wouldn't hesitate to place Under The Pink and Boys For Pele among my favorite albums of *all-time*. I simply wasn't taken with this album. And, to stop a discussion before it starts, I decided to join this mailing list now (as Tori enters a new musical era that I haven't particularly positive about) because I've been meaning to do it for awhile, but I was just waiting for a few things to calm down first. And-- if anyone is on RDT(RN)-- you'll remember I had a tiff with a few people on that mailing list and I wanted to wash my hands of that before moving on to another Tori list. If the TicketMaster close to you isn't bright enough to figure this out, get the telephone number for the TicketMaster in the area that the concert is being held and call when tickets go on sale. /nad ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 May 1998 18:19:07 -0500 From: forsythia_in_the_spam@juno.com (Dust A Bunny) Subject: TORI ALL BEEFED UP! Hello My Nautical Nuns, In the latest Rolling Stones, the one with Johnny Depp on the cover, it has a little picture and article with Tori in the Random Notes Section. It shows Tori, singing at her piano with a black tank top and some pocketish khaki pants. Her hair is slightly damp and she is looking sexy. The article reads: "I got really nervous and I lost my voice," TORI AMOS told a sold-out audience at the New York's Irving Plaza. "I don't know how weight lifters do it because I'm craving things right now!" She did not attempt to bench-press her piano. On her brief sixteen-city club tour, Amos previewed her adventurous new album, From the Choirgirl Hotel. But no worries - she promises plenty of beef-uped favorites when she plays arenas this summer. Sorry about the typos and sorry if someone already posted this. I just got my Rolling Stones in the mail and rushed upstairs to type it. But I dunno when I will send it. I know, I'm pathetic. Leave me alone! Take care. Bi bi. Me, the Flea "I'm a winter girl; I like coming out when things are desolate and everybody's ready to slit their wrists." - -Tori Amos _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. I don't want anything to happen to her! Don't worry. :) I'm sure that Tori is under the care of a physician. It's not like you can run to your local pharmacy and get some. She's been working hard to take care of her vocal chords, and this is just one step in the process. And speaking as someone who's had to take steroids for years, the possible complications when done properly are minimal. >Another question, does anyone know where I can find the *complete* lyrics >to Do It Again, Bachelorette, Purple People and Cooling? There are some chords up at: http://www.harmony-central.com/Guitar/OLGA/all/tori_amos.html Right now, there's only chords up for Jackie's Strength, but look for more later. There are two books of sheet music coming out in the near future. One is for the album, the other is an anthology. No word yet on cost or which songs are included. The books should be out very soon now, although I wasn't able to find any mention of them in any online bookstore. /nad - -- Interested in trading boots? Anyways, as an intro to one of the segments, they played the beginning of "Cruel". It was really cool :) Of course then I started at the tv for the rest of the show, hoping for a glimpse of Tori, but I wasnt that lucky. K, bye!
