People just usually assume it was a rape. But the guy who napped her was high and was really only capable of scaring her to death and threatening to kill her...which is enough trauma in and of itself. How she escaped was that he left the car he was holding her in to get drugs. He wasn't even thinking that of course she'd escape because she had the opportunity. I have a really great article from a European newspaper where Tori actually devulges more information about it than I have heard or seen since....actually in great detail. What I do see, however, is the fairies and butterflies all throughout 'She's your Cocaine' (look at the bottom right corner of the song, and there's a butterfly). As for not mentioning Neil outright, she mentions the Velvets (from Neverwhere). Neil hasn't been forgotten. I am kinda disappointed in a few things, though. To me, this album has a sense of just being thrown together ... the songs don't seem to have as many quotable lines as her past songs ... I'm not impressed with the artwork for the album (I think it's an interesting idea, but I don't like it), I don't like the fact I have to go searching through my CD lyric booklet to find the songs (since they're not in order), and I'm highly disappointed in the merchandise I've seen thusfar for this album. The Promo lyric booklet, as far as I'm concerned, is great for reading the lyrics, but little else ... and don't even get me started on taht stupid necklace (come on folks ... you can go down to your local hardware store, and buy the washer and chain for less than $3). There's some strengths to this album, and there's some weak spots. There are songs I love and adore, and others I just don't have the patience for at the moment (so they get skipped over). On a side note, channel surfing this morning, I hit MTV, and they just came back from commercial, and played Spark! I was thrilled, needless to say. :) -- The Mermaid ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 May 1998 10:26:59 +0100 From: Ken Tough Subject: Re: strange finger symbols Beth Winegarner wrote: >Another thought -- does anyone have a topographical map of Cornwall? Do the >mountains and lanes and stuff line up? Or is her map complete fantasy? Sure, I've got several. Unfortunately, it's a fantasy land. Well, who's to say, really. One thing's for sure... there are no mountains here (though I suppose some rather pathetic wannabees). There are oodles of standing stones, pretty well no lakes (a few reservoirs), lots of sea, plenty of fields, a few mazes, but none of them seem to line up, especially not in the North of the county where the Martïans live. It is an odd world where rivers have bridges over roads (though of course, there are a few of those around britain as well [aquaducts]). In the near vicinity of the studio, there's lots of small streams, and the land is very hilly with lots of wooded copses. The moors (Bodmin/Exmoor) are not all that far away. The one key point (the abbey) doesn't jump out from anywhere. The "still defending Richard III troll bridge" might well be a jibe at the Cornish, who vehemently guard their "border" at the Tamar river, and whose "national anthem" [Trelawney's Army] extolls the Cornishmen who supported Charles I against King James and the roundhead parliamentarians. (We'll cross the Tamar hand in hand the Severn is no stay ... King James' men will understand what Cornishmen can do...) Her part of the county is right up against the Tamar river, and there's a few small reservoirs that could have been the inspiration of the "moxsfadf on Sundays lake". So all in all, I'd have to say it's impossible to say whether it's based at all in reality. If you searched, you'd be able to fit anything to it in a stretch, but you could do that in 1,000 places. It just depends how hard you try. - -- Ken Tough Cornwall, U.K. Home of the Choirgirl Hotel ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 May 1998 20:47:37 -0700 (PDT) From: "Dominick W. For the first time, Amos and her grand piano are accom- panied by a band which makes for not- so-divine material. No doubt, many Tori fans are going to feel intruded by the added percussion, guitar, bass and pro- gramming. Recorded in a three-hun- dred year old barn in Cornwall, En- gland, From the Choirgirl Hotel is a huge step away from her previous albums in that it has an industrial feel that is hard to warm up to. However, the entire effort is not without exceptions, on the first half of the song, "iieee," the drums lead a re- freshing tribal beat while the rest of the instruments take the liberty to rock out for a good 20 seconds. Her song "Cruel" sounds like it could've belonged to the soundtrack of the '80s flick "Sixteen Candles." On such songs as "Rasperry Swirl," the slide guitar and synthesiz- ers are so uncharacteristic of Tori's mu- sic that it comes off as completely out of place. But once you can decipher her lyr- ics, the material becomes more interest- ing: "If you want inside her, well, boy, you better make her rasperry swirl." The most impressive cut is "Spark," a song inspired by her mis- carriage. The lyrics are moving and tragic: "She's convinced she could hold back a glacier, but she couldn't keep Baby alive, doubting if there's a woman in there somewhere." In a re- cent interview on national radio Ms. Amos said, "The strange thing is that the miscarriage became the seed for the music...It's much more a respect for life, this record, and the miracle of life and the life-force." While Tori chose this album to rock out, she still shows off her fluid soprano that re- mains constant within all her albums. -Gabriel Nunez Staff Chica ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # and if I'm wasting all your time, this time maybe you never learned to take and if I'm hanging on to your shade I guess I'm way beyond the pale :::::::::::: -Tori Amos # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 May 1998 18:22:18 EDT From: Cindy26471 Subject: Re: Spark US CD info from CDNOW i saw this too and was wondering if perhaps it was the uk singles that they just now might be getting in. who knows? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 May 1998 03:05:42 -0700 From: Beth Winegarner Subject: Cruel I read in the new issue of ICE that the Tori song that's going to be on the Avengers soundtrack will be "Cruel." The tracks seem to be the same, so is there something I'm missing, >or are the record companies just looking for new ways to make us open our >wallets? Okay, here's a rundown of the Spark singles to date: There are two UK singles for Spark. Actually, there are two UK singles for most of the songs. It's very common practise for record companies in the UK to release two singles for the same song: one regular edition, one limited edition. The "regular" UK Spark CD has the following tracks: Spark, Purple People (Christmas in Space), Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, and Bachelorette. Contrary to some reports, Bachelorette is -not- a cover of the Bjork song by the same name. This is a completely new Tori composition. The "limited edition" UK Spark single has the following tracks: Spark, Do It Again, and Cooling. Do It Again is a cover of the Steely Dan song. Cooling is a Tori original that we first heard in October 1996 when she performed it in Florida on the DDI tour. {There is also a UK cassette single with Spark and Purple People (Christmas in Space), but I don't figure that anyone beyond the true completist is interested in that.} We finally have word on the US Spark singles. We don't know the track listings on them yet, but there will be two of them. CDNow {http://www.cdnow.com} is taking preorders on them. The release date appears to be June 9. Given the price difference between them {one is $6, the other $3}, I'm guessing that we're going to see US singles somewhat like the R.E.M. singles from their last album: one single with the track and one b-side, and one single with the track and a couple of b-sides. Anyone who's familiar with R.E.M. knows what I'm talking about.
