That's a 38 second difference. Talk about a tempo change. Personally, I like the hyper Letterman version better. I haven't timed the Leno version yet, so I don't know the exact time but I would think it's a lot closer to the album's. My guess is that since Letterman was the first real live performance with the band (wasn't it?) that they just got lost in the tempo and ran away with it. That's what tends to happen in a lot of musical ensembles, especially if the performers are nervous and haven't been doing it a while. And Tori has said in interviews that the band was using the club tour to get its bearings and get used to playing together. Hence, she wants to play to a maximum nnumber of people for the one night she will be in town. Lessens tour time, and still gets to play to all the people who want to see her. Touring can be exhausting. Maybe she just wants to spend more time relaxing with her new husband, or just anything. The biggest difference with this group of "girls" is that Tori feels they are more apart from her than her earlier ones. That these girls are not necessarily parts of her as they are a group of newly made friends. LE, UtP & BfP girls were all parts of Tori and her life and beliefs. This time she says that she is just relating what these girls tell her. I think that is part of the power of this album, that each girl is so very distinct in and of herself as being strong individuals. And I agree Manda, this is a good topic for discussion. It is so simple, yet so damn deep and painful. I remember at the show in Ft. Lauderdale, it was an emotional rollercoaster for em that show. I spent half of it in tears, of joy or pain, but tears. They were all for songs that I knew, that related to events that are transpiring in my life (or were to more of an extent at the moment): Tear in your Hand (my favorite girl), Putting the Damage On. And then, the second encore came, and she starts playing the piano, the notes to (the yet unknown at the moment) Northern Lad. I stood there, alone in the crowd, just her and me, listening to the lyrics, makign them mine as they came from her lips, and I started crying again, to a song that I'd never heard. It was the lyrics, the words, the message. Although consciously I couldn't remember all of them, my mind had captured each word, and sent me into an emotional pit. "You've got to know when it's time to turn the page." I still get shivers. Agreed. It took me a considerably long time to get used to Boys for Pele; for a novitiate Tori fan weaned on "Little Earthquakes" and a few small doses of "Under the Pink," Boys for Pele was quite a shocker at first. And now? Now it just seems to blend right in with LE and UtP for me. Well, not exactly; I now see it as integrated, part of Tori's definitive style, though it is in itself a stylistic departure from her two previous albums. I don't suppose I'll ever think of FTCGH as integrated into that same style as the first three albums, but I already see it as distinctly Tori's style, as different as it is. Her piano style, and her vocal quirks, shine through, even with her new sound. And, like Amy wrote, her earlier works certainly hinted at her capabilities of achieving this sound! > So really, i think people need to be careful not to write the album off > yet. Tori is not like that, you have to give her a chance. i'm not Right. . . on first listen I *really* didn't like most of FTCGH, but now I think it's probably my second favorite, right behind LE. And BfP, which CGH just dethroned on my list, was the album I honestly couldn't stand for about the first two weeks that I had it. I think what happens is that eventually, you find a lyric or melody of Tori's that just reaches out and grabs you and won't let go, and from then on you pretty much get pulled into the album. . . For me, I think that "snagging" little hook was probably "If you love enough you lie a lot/Guess they did in Camelot," from "Jackie's Strength." "Spark," as much as I love it, had been around as a single far too long already, and I'd been so accustomed to thinking of it as a single that it really wasn't enough to pull me into the album. > Also, whoever said that "Northern Lad" was the song that broke through and > helped them to love the album and become friends with it, that's what > happened to me too. God, what a song... i can't imagine ANYONE listening > to it and not being affected strongly by it. Maybe this will be the > "gateway song" for a lot of people, because it's a good balance of > piano-based Tori and band-based Tori.... plus it's just so touching. That's what happened to me too--"Spark" got me interested, "Jackie's Strength" pulled me in, but "Northern Lad" pulled that last string for me and snapped it all into place (I know I'm mixing my metaphors horribly). It's the song that I identified with the most, and so yes, it's "Northern Lad" that got me and FTCGH to be close friends. (Incidentally, this has been my first day on the list--thanks to all for making it such a pleasant one! I'm looking forward to more.) Consider that the "club tour" was Tori's idea. This may have been a trade-off for the arena venues on the world tour. Studio execs, PR people and the booking agency all have more say in where Tori goes than Tori does (sad - I know, but alas, the price of fame), and we ALL know what a notoriously skewed perspective that these "suits" have of "Joe and Mary Consumer". I would also be willing to pay more money to see Tori in a smaller venue, and I certainly don't mind giving my hard-earned dollars to an artist whose work I respect; but I DO expect to get something for my money. My seats for the Rosemont show are not too shabby (upper level - section 203), but my sympathies go out to the poor bastards at the back of the house who paid $35 to see Tori as a featureless ant on stage (you will all know what I mean when you see the venue). This whole thing is extremely frustrating to all EwF's, but I have faith in Tori. She can be a tough cookie, from what I know of her; and I know she cares about her fans' opinions. Word of dissatisfaction will inevitably reach Ms. Amos' ears, and I am certain that we will see improvements in the future. If anyone has read Tori's opinion (if any) of large-venue concerts, please post to the list. I know I would like to know her thoughts on this topic. D. Maybe once all this chick singer hype dies down, she'll go back to smaller venues. A friend of mine is (tentatively) going to the tour opener in Milwaukee....I'll have to ask him how the crowd is.. Phoenix >> these shows are not going to be the same as the nice small shows from past tours.. on the Dew Drop Inn tour i, like many of you, repeatedly traveled hundreds of miles to see Tori play whenever i could.. the shows were that good.. However, on this tour, i'll be seeing this show, and probably this show only.. unless of course she comes back to playing smaller venues like the Rosemont Theatre or Arie Crown Theater... I was wondering, what do all of you people think is the reason Tori is going on a big arena tour this time around? Does she think that this is what we want? Is it the money? Is it so she can bring her show to more people (which just boils down to more money..) or something else altogether? Personally I'd pay $50-$75 for a ticket to see her play a venue like the Rosemont Theatre.. I had to think if i really wanted to pay $30 to see her at the Horizon... jeffpriz ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 May 1998 16:21:13 EDT From: Talula8956 Subject: Re: kinda disappointed I was also kinda disappointed with the Jay Leno show also. The eyebrows were terrible, she's so beautiful naturally, she definitely doesn't need crap like that. I don' t think she had her heart in it. I also don't think Caton was there, and that may be why it sounded different. Was he there? I watched the tape again and I couldn't find him. I don't think she liked her eyebrows either. ( the bleep, bleep thing) I hope she doesn't start to look too glam rock. But I'll still love her anyways! She was glowing....I don't know WHAT it was, but there was such a happiness about her...She certainly played the song differently than I have ever heard (and compared to the Letterman show). Leno topped Letterman in that he took a few minutes to talk to her after the show....Cute. Were any of you in the audience? It sounded like there were a lot of fans there....I wonder when she is going to start promoting the cd with different songs.... I told you they were THOUGHTS...kinda random. It's just the way Tori is, i'm almost positive that's what she means... it kind of fits in with the entire song, if you go get your little book and read the lyrics in there [as difficult as it has proven to find certain songs due to the booklet's crazy and confusing content :) i love it] Just my 2 cents here babes, Kristy ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V3 #180 *************************************
