Yeah.....I did, I'll get to that later. In the mean time, consider yourself cyper-tied to your chair and being forced to read this speil :-) Well, it's been nearly four weeks since I bugged ya about donating to the fund raiser to replace the existing hardware that houses smoe.org with new stuff. For those of you who are new to this particular list and likely don't know me, or didn't read my previous email on this fund raiser, the gist of my first post follows below this second pitch of mine :-) I'll give ya a full report on what we've collected so far. While the amount may sound impressive at first thought, it's really not. Especially when I throw all the figures at you. So far, we've raised nearly half of my/our immediate goal of $3,000 (although I'd be ecstatic at $4,000). We've gotten $1,470.68 However, that total has been contributed by only 67 people, and over half ($865) of it has been contributed by 11 people who gave 40, 50, 100 or 125 dollars. That means the other 56 people have totaled $605, which isn't bad at all for 56 people :-) It's the 67 total donors that is below our expectations, especially when you consider that there are over 9,600 subscriptions to the 44 (yes! 44!) mailing lists hosted at smoe.org, which represents about 7500 separate email addresses/people. I think we can do better than 67 out of 7,500+. I know we can :-) So please, send what you can, whether it be 5, 10 or more....I want to reach that goal of at least $3,000 and would LOVE to see us get $4,000. Remember, Jeff Wasilko, the generous dude that provides these lists free of charge, bought the now 7 year old equipment with his own moola, not to mention he pays the $150+ monthly operating costs (a dedicated ISDN line). The least we can do is pay a major chunk of the cost of the new Sun Sparc station(s) he plans on replacing the present smoe with, before it dies and this all ends for a while. **************************************************************************** ***** DOOR PRIZES DOOR PRIZES DOOR PRIZES DOOR PRIZES **************************************************************************** ***** While it's not many, I did manage to acquire 7 autographed Jewel items, plus a couple of dozen trinkets for door prizes. They will all be *randomly* awarded to people who donate to this cause, no matter what list you belong to. The seven autographed items are (each individualy awarded): a) Two twenty-page, full of pictures, full color Jewel lyric books autographed in gold ink on the front cover. These are the same books that were being sold at last summers' Lilith Fair and Jewel's 1998 Fall Tour. b) Two sets of five 5x7 semi-glossy color photo packs, with the first picture autographed in gold ink. c) Two of Jewel's ten times platinum CD Pieces Of You, with the insert autographed in gold ink. d) This is the top prize, especially to the collectors out there! A brand spanking new autographed in gold ink, RARE promotional CD, commonly known as "Phyllis Barnaby Finally Gets A Bra". It's a 4 track "You Were Meant For Me" promo CD that is pretty much impossible to find now a days. In fact, I myself consider it harder to find than her other promo CD "Save The Linoleum". The 4 tracks are an unreleased version of You Were Meant For Me (known as the Juan Patino version), and three other unreleased tracks Cold Song, Rocker Girl and Emily (although all three have subsequently been released on the vinyl version of Pieces Of You) Again, all seven (plus the trinkets.....Jewel guitar key chains and Jewel guitar pins), will be randomly given away to people who have already donated or donate in the future :-) See below on where/how to donate to help get a new smoe.org and keep these lists running & problem free for a long time to come :-) Thanx, Mike Connell (still ringing that bell) THE GIST OF MY FIRST POST (what the he** is a gist anyway? ;-): Posted in early April: Some of you may know me, most don't I'm sure. My name is Mike Connell and I manage the Jewel and Patty Griffin mailing lists at smoe.org. I'm writing you today is to ask for your help in a fund raiser to help keep smoe.org up and running for many more years to come. A gentle bloke by the name of Jeff Wasilko owns smoe.org and has always paid the monthly operating costs (NOT a small penny) and of course had paid for the expensive equipment it presently runs on. He has always offered this service for free since day one....no user fees....no list owner fees...totally free :-) Many rising artists and their fans have benefited from this service, as smoe.org hosts lists for such artists as Happy Rhodes, Paula Cole, Jewel, Patty Griffin, Tori Amos, Thomas Dolby, Poe, Susan Werner, Leah Andreone, Luscious Jackson, Ben Folds Five, the Indigo Girls, Shawn Colvin and many, many more. Some of these once unknown artists, and more to come I'm sure, had their internet presence begin right here at smoe.org :-) For a complete list of which artists have mailing lists hosted at smoe.org, you can go to http://www.smoe.org/lists Jeff is looking into replacing the hardware smoe.org operates on with more modern equipment, as the present units are a pair of seven year old SUN Sparc stations. This is necessary to get newer and better equipment in place before the present system falls down and goes boom permanently, leaving the lists at smoe.org temporarily without a home :-) This would be bad....very bad. This replacement is going to cost a pretty penny. On other list servers this would be no problem, as money would be used from the user fees. However since such fees don't exist here at smoe.org, we are asking for your help in the form of donations. We are not asking for major dollars here, just whatever you can give, whether it be $2, $5, $10, more ....whatever. You can send a check, a money order, or if a buck or two or three if you wish to send cash. If you can't afford anything, don't sweat it, this is NOT mandatory to stay on your list. We are just asking for you to help out if you can. Money orders are a piece of cake. (At least in the USA) They don't have a large fee at all, generally less than a buck, sometimes as low as 35 cents....although money orders from banks usually carry a larger fee (go figure ;-) Your best bet for a money order (in the USA) would be from the US Post Office....all money orders there have an 85 cent fee no matter what the dollar amount of the money order is. *** All checks or money orders should be made out to Jeff Wasilko :-) PLEASE DO NOT MAKE THEM OUT TO ME (Mike Connell) :-) ********************** HOW TO DONATE: ********************** Simple :-) Just send what you want (no Monopoly money please) to me at Mike Connell PO Box 1206 Binghamton NY 13902-1206 and I'll tally up all the figures etc and send it all on to Jeff :-) Remember, please make out all checks or money orders to Jeff Wasilko !!! :-) Please don't make them out to me :-) In your envelope, please include a note that contains your full name, the list(s) you belong to, and your email address you use here at smoe.org (I need to contact you if you win a door prize, and this acknowleges that I received your donation, as I contact you when I get your donation) Please help in this mission to give smoe.org a new home :-) If you have any questions, please feel free to write me and ask. And it sounds like she says, "you come out old," so maybe she's trying to say that she's like not really young and she was an old bachelorette?! She talks about how you can never rush a man...and it sounds like she is/was unsure about her wedding she says something that sounds like "untight/untied abuse" and I'm sure she says, "you're at the door, the tide will turn, theres a window..." and to me it's like he came to get married and she wants to escape--using the window as an escape method?!--but before she says that it seems she has a feeling to stay because "the tide will turn" she means maybe that there comes a time when you want to get married but are unsure. Also she says "she'd go to paris on her own" meaning she was comfortable being on her own? But this all could not be abotu Mark and be about her band using "bachelorette" as a word meaning like independant musically instead of not being married which is also a great possibility...I really want to know what she says for half of the song! Ka-ching, Ka-ching! >Boy, would I love to have this marketing deal in *my* pocket! All of the shows thus far have been recorded like this. I have to say though, Atlantic has missed some huge opportunities on marketing Tori. We were absolutely clamoring for a CD or video of Tori's performance on MTV Unplugged. The RAINN video, which was recorded here!, hasn't made its way into the US market yet {besides imports from Canada and those who got a UK video converted professionally}. A UtP/BfP video collection, like the LE video, would've been well-received too. So I dunno. Part of me says that yeah, we'll see these items; another part of me says that the folks at AtRecs aren't bright enough to realise the market they're ignoring. /nad ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 May 1998 14:53:05 -0400 From: becky Subject: Tori mentioned in the State News . . . This was featured in our university paper . . . to my great delight. It was a beautiful show: TOPSY TORI by MacKenzie A. Wilson DETROIT - The bird-like songstress known for curdling vocals and mighty dispositions of female liberalism, male frustrations, sexual abuse, and skepticisms about religion paints the colorful picture of Tori Amos. On her first tour since the 1996 Dew Drop Inn tour, Tori embarked on a small 12-date club tour of North American clubs on April 18 in support of her forthcoming new album, "From the Choirgirl Hotel." Slated for release on Tuesday, her fourth album marks her personal trials and tribulations of a miscarriage suffered after the last tour. Newcomer David Poe opened the show's performance, presenting a simplistic nature reflected from ex-Crowded House frontman, Nel Finn. Poe's self-titled debut album captures themes of dysfunctional relationships and sentiment. Poe posed a little off of Duncan Sheik, and Tori gawkers welcomed Poe. His acoustic flair showcased his material to be pure and sweetly refined. Nearly 1,100 privileged Tori devotees swarmed St. Andrews Hall Wednesday evening for Tori's rare stop on the Sneak Preview '98 Plugged tour. Purchasing tickets for this exclusive event was a grueling procedure, for tickets could only be bought at the hosting venue. Vouchers were distributed, allowing fans to admitted to the show. Change is a word which has molded Tori during the last two years. She recently married her sound engineer, Mark Hawley. This is the first time a band has accompanied Tori on tour. Fans obviously noted the worthy transformations despite the ticket hastle. Tori exuded her usual graceful charm, but her newly absorbed solid edge stammered through her new material. Tori definitely made a bold statement and integrated her mature growth during the evening. She fluttered her arms like a tribal queen on "Black Dove(January)," the show opener which elevated sweeping, echoing sounds of English moors. Tori's full-frontal piano stance elegantly clashed among the thunderous bongo beats of drummer Matt Chamberlain. "Why does there gotta be a sacrifice?" she sang in "iieee," - pinching keyboard synths soared and a wholesome vocal growl sparked Tori's lustful energy and adopted hard rock sound. "Liquid Diamonds" and "Northern Lad" highlighted industrial driven sounds and intense vocal flights. Lighting consisted of orange and turquoise beams circling Tori - like a silhouette. Tori may be a Methodist preacher's daughter, but her evocative stage presence only reestablished her newly acclaimed acceptance of adulthood. Tori also treated fans to older favorites such as "Precious Things" and "Cloud On My Tongue." "Waitress" tumbled slowly, eventually advancing into a moody orchestral monotony. Current single "Spark" illustrated psychedelic guitar grooves by guitarist Steve Caton. Lighting swirls of the Sun depicted Tori's soulful emotion among the glistening white colors of winter sneakily peaking through. Two encores portrayed Tori's angelic beauty. "She's Your Cocaine" was the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's" and "Strawberry Fields" twisted into a rocketing blast. "God" was revamped into a jazzy, loud feel. So breathtaking, Tori closed with Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide." The audience silent awe bowed to Tori as tears streamed down her face. "Because children get older, and I'm getting older, too," she said. In an effort to reiterate her maturing spiritual process, Tori made this known to fans and once again to herself. Greet the angel from the choirgirl hotel. It's a pretty nice article. There is also a picture of Tori in concert pose accompanying it. becky ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 May 1998 18:10:57 EDT From: PeacePoet2 Subject: Re: regarding the bad review reactions.... In our school newspaper meetings, we are taught to be objective. Not to take sides and tell both points of view. Not to let our own opinions get in the way of our article, and if that happens, we'll be told to edit it. Obviously, these journalists never listened to their editors. And the editors don't have the guts to say hey, this is an opinion piece, not an informative article. Or they didn't listen in middle school newspaper meetings. Peace, Manda ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 May 1998 17:58:22 EDT From: SmerfCrazy Subject: (no subject) yes folks.......... yet another *TERRIBLE!* review of toris new albumn. this was in todays (Sunday May 3) edition of the Daily News. of all of them, this could be the worse! its a pretty big article and a picture with the caption: "Flake, or Fake? Tori Amos' improbably incoherent lyrics make you wonder." STILL THE SAME OLD TORI Aimless Amos is back with more loopy lyrics Tori Amos "from the choirgirl hotel" (Atlantic) Warning: You are now entering Toriville. You may experience disorientation, nausea or mild perturbment. Those with a love of words or a feel for poetry should take special care. Theres but one language allowed in this world and thats Tori-speak, a form that makes sense only within the mind of Tori Amos. Look, heres a bit of Tori-speak now, taken from her new albumn: "The offering is molasses/and you say I guess I'm an underwater thing." Here's more: "Foam can be dangerous with tape across my mouth." More still! "I know we're sying/and theres no sign of a parachute/we scream in cathedrals." In fact, you can skip to any spot on Tori's new albumn and you'll be greeted by words that resist meaning, or murder the rhythm and clarity of poetry. Who but Tori would come up with images like "the lollipop Gestapo" or "ice-cream assassins"? What, precisely, do such things mean? Poetic Injustice Images like these threaten to make R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe seem as trenchant as Cole Porter. Of course, fair-minded souls would say that Tori-ville exists only in a dream state, and shouldnt be judged by daytime standards. But dreams arent poetry. Theyre not even song lyrics, and Tori presents her words as if they were expert examples of both, printing them carefully on every albumn cover. Its not just the pull of narcissism that encourages her to do so. Commercial pop trends of the 90's have also emboldened her to spew. The singer fist rose to power with 1992's "Little Earthquakes" at a point when popular music prized eccentricity at all costs. The alternative movement turned provocation and self-expression into major selling points, in reaction to the conservatism of '80s pop. Amos' impenetrable lyrics dovetailed perfectly with the publics desire for more "personal" statements, as did the extreme intimacy of her music, exstablished through its jarring time structures, quirky inflections and an odd miz of traditional singer-songwriter piano music and cool sound effects. By making the styels of joni Mitchell and kate Bush elastic, the star turned Toriville into one of pop's major tourist attractions. Three platinum albumns later, her music sounds less strange. Theres nothing shocking about the industrial effects rattling around in a new song like "Jackies Strength." (personal note: umm........ where is there industrial sound effects in this song??? you tell me!) We heard similar sounds in older pieces. Theres familiarity as well to Amos's murmuring piano riffs, bleeding bass lines and use of unusual instruments. Alll of which allows us to concentrate more on Amos' melodies, which this time tip closer to accessible pop. Theres more fluidity to her tunes and less airlines, too. "Raspberry Swirl" even features rock guitar and a club beat. Those who like their Tori as indulgent as possible shouldnt fret. Her vocal delivery couldnt be more self-invoked. Its a sound so feminine and circumscribed, youd swear she was singing from her vulva (???!!!!). To boot, dreamy types can always count on the distracted blather of her lyrics, which reach some kind of la-la peak in lines like"Dont give me a piece of your preciousness/flaunt all shes got in our new neighborhood/Im sure she'll make a few friends/even the rain bows down." Oy! Either Tori ranks as the queen of the kooks, or as just someone savvy enough to understand how lucrative it can be to play a flake. You decide which is worse. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ - -------------- wow. i wont even start on this one. im sorry, but i find it extremely difficult to respect someones opinion about her when they show *blatant* disrespect for her as an artist. its one thing to give a bad review, its another thing to downright insult her. maybe i am wrong for being a bit upset by this, but this article is really terrible. whatever, i really dont care. i mean, i like her. we like her. who cares what other people think, right? im just brushing this off of my shoulder. i know that *I* will be happy when i get my hands on this albumn tuesday. just thought everyone would like to read another sh*t review. oh.. and sorry if there are any typo's in the article, i dont feel like re- reading it to check it. :) take care jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjj (plastic is a disease) ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V3 #164 *************************************
