(before anything, did anyone else catch the Jai reference in the subject?) This is an e-mail about a sincere belief I have. I believe with my heart that there is going to be a Plugged '98 video, not unlike "Little Earthquakes". To see the main reason, look at the video clips they have at tori.com. They are ALL produced, with several cameras and camera tricks. I think it would be kind of odd to go through all that for a RealVideo broadcast that is usually up for like three days, especially when RealVideo works better when the cameras don't change. The logical explaination is that these are sneak peeks from a Plugged '98 video. I HOPE AND PRAY THIS IS TRUE!!!!! NOTE: I DON'T KNOW FOR CERTAIN. DON'T BOMBARD ME WITH E-MAILS. THIS IS JUST MY HYPOTHESIS. I'd like some discussion on this - for example, I think they should only have live stuff from Plugged '98 on it (ONE SONG FROM EACH SHOW!!!!!!! Or maybe like the Alanis Morissette "Jagged Little Pill Live" video, that is just so amazing I can't describe it...) and not, like, the video for "Spark" or something. (even though I also think that they should release a video, like the video collections of Sarah McLachlan and Jane Siberry, that has all the videos on it, but oh well) Have a nice day, everyone! It also has Samurai, Frog On My Toe, London Girls, and Talula Synethasia. The 2nd was Springtime of His Voodoo, which has the LP version, 3 mixes and Sugar Dub. Both are pretty good, but I just don't know how I feel about all these dance style mixes. They seem like something I'd listen to while doing homework, writing letters, or cleaning the house! I also bought the Little Earthquakes video, which I can not express how much I love it. I had goosebumps everytime it was Tori live. I wish they'd had footage from more than one show though. Also, to others who have this, is the sound quality kind of sketchy on parts, or is mine a defect?? The other thing I purchased which I don't think I've heard mentioned yet is a CD Book about Tori Amos. Anyone seen these? It's a book the size of a CD. I haven't gotten a chance to read it yet, but there are some beautiful Tori pictures. It's over 100 pages. All and all it seems pretty cool for $7.00. Olivas" Subject: Re: A Plea to those going to Fillmore... Hello all, I'm just writing this e-mail as a response to tasha's Atlanta Tori experience, and as a plea to the crowd at the upcoming Fillmore concert. I feel Tasha's frustration and can easily see where she is coming from. Not that I advocate strict concert etiquette and guidelines for participating, nor does tasha for that matter, yet, I feel that she, as well as I, advocate 'respect'. I've been to my share of concerts and have found that the one's I've enjoyed the most have involved a total experience intertwining the emotion of the performer(s) and the energy/emotion of the crowd. I have also found that the one's I've disliked have involved myself fallen prey to disrespectful concert attendees. My last Tori concert hasn't been since she played at the Greek in L.A. two years ago, and I am being selfish when I say this, I don't want my next Tori experience, May 5th at the Fillmore, to be a complete mess where I am concentrating more on my survival in a pseudo-Tori-moshpit than on her music and the vibes from the music. Tasha is correct in saying that there are experienced ways of dealing with Gen. Admission concerts, and that those not used to them are usually in it mainly for themselves. I'm sorry if I sound overly concerned, but, hell, I've been looking forward to seeing Tori for helluva long time, and didn't even think I'd ever get a chance to see her again. Let's make this a positive concert experience, and show Tori that we are mature people who are grateful for the time and efforts that she and her Plugged Tour planners have put into this concept. Very few mianstream/somewhat mainstream artists even take a minute to entertain such an idea as this. Let's make it happen the right way. I saw the D.C. 9:30 Club show. It was a great deal of fun, and there was much good music to be had. I won't say it was the best Tori show I ever saw because it wasn't even close to that, but it might have been the most joyous and most purely *fun* show I ever saw! Those people were all having a grand old time onstage playing that stuff. Tori was smiling nearly the entire time, and the others in the band were pretty loose during the majority of the concert. I think I can pretty well sum up my feelings about this show by referring to a conversation I had with Mark after it ended. I told him it was interesting to me how the newer songs translate the best to the live band format--especially in terms of the music reaching greater depth. Those songs were created with a band, and the older ones weren't. So, while the band arrangement of Precious Things is rather spectacular in a lot of ways, Tear In Your Hand is less so, and the newer songs as a rule far outshine the older ones she plays with the band. I don't think he'll mind my revealing that I asked how much they had rehearsed for this tour, and he told me SEVEN DAYS! I was astounded, because for the DDI tour with only her and Caton, they had *ten* days of rehearsal. I asked him if they were rehearsing on the days in between shows and he told me they were not! She is *really* whipping those guys into shape with little preparation time. I'm impressed. And I stand by my views that these are some seriously talented players of exactly the type she needs with her, and given a bit more time on the road with them it's gonna be truly astounding. I don't really have time to give a full review of this show right now, although I took copious notes, but I saw the excellent music writer for the Post Richard Harrington at the show, so I expect a review in the Washington Post one day soon. I also saw the Baltimore Sun's music writer J.D. Considine, but I'm extremely doubtful he was writing anything as a result. He may have a major interview piece out soon as he usually does for a Tori album, so we'll have to keep a lookout for that. Likely a Sunday near the album's release date. I do want to say that I had a hell of a great time. Lots of fun, many laughs, and a lot of good music--and some good people. The crowd was fairly relaxed and Tori stretched out as a result. The tempi of some of the songs was surprisingly slow to me. As someone forwarded to the ToriNews list I did manage to call in a set list to Michael Whitehead right after the show, but believe it or not, I had to come directly into work, and have been unable to post before now. Were my boss not out of town for these very two weeks making it impossible for me to take leave, I'd be planning to go see more than this and the Philly shows, but I'll make do. :-) Be seeing you, Richard Handal, H.G. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Apr 1998 06:10:15 PDT From: "Capriccio 191" Subject: re: no sir I didn't like it Hi! >i am the only person i think who will write and say that they felt >this way...i was very disappointed in the atlanta club show. Hey! I'm sorry you didn't have a good time Tasha! I know what you mean about the horrible people around you. I hope I wasn't one of those that was mean. (This is Jenn, the girl with the camera. :) For those of you who weren't there with us I smuggled a camera into the venue and Tasha's friend Steven took pictures fron me because he was taller and in front of me...hmmm) That one girl who said she'd take off Steven's head when the music started was so damn annoying. I was glad when she moved to the balcony. >i feel that the band drowns her out. many of the songs with the band >music made it hard to hear her, or the piano. i feel that i had lost >the tori that i fell in love with. at times she seemed in a tizzy and >the sweet, sweet girl that sings me to sleep was invisible. One thing you have to realize, and I know this is even harder with Tori fans, but Tori is her own person. She will always be Tori, but as we grow and change with her music helping us she is also going to grow and change. > feel like the band distacts from her way too much. maybe my opinion >will change as of hearing the album...i am ready :). I think that was part of the point of simply being bored with the girl and a piano thing. It's the same thing with Jewel writing a book of poetry (which I think will be incredible...she's much more eloquent with her poetry as opposed to her songs) and starring in a movie. They need more stimulation. If you don't grow and change what is the point of living? >aside from all the pot and alcohol, more than one fight broke out, >and people were cutting eachother down personally saying things like >"i will kick the s**t out of anyone who gets in my way" and "you get >the f**k out of my face and shut up" and "i have strong teeth and nails and can kick anyones a**, and i know how to rip hair!" and "i don't care if you are short, no one is getting by me!" I mean SCREAMING these things! She's not kidding guys, this stuff was going on. I thought that musically the show was incredible, but the crowd absolutely sucked. I did like the fact that everything was louder and so the screaming during the songs was okay. One thing I must say. I am not short, but I am not tall either. This thing that tall people shouldn't be up front...I have a real problem with that. These people waited in line the same as everyone else. One of my friends is very tall and I don't think it would have been fair to him to have to stand in the back of the theater just because he was probably the tallest person there. So, guys, remember that the people who as being arseholes aren't people who we bond with at Tori concerts and try to ignore them as much as possible. Also, remember that Tori is not your personal property, nor does she have some duty to play the things that you want to hear or the style that you want to hear. She is a human being just like all of us, and we all know how we hate to be told what to do. ;) well, that's all I have to say about that. :) Jenn (Tasha not all of this is aimed at you, just general comments.) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Apr 1998 17:14:51 -0400 From: Kelley Subject: DC Show Well. i don't know where to begin sorting out what i think of this show, which probably indicates right off the bat that it's not all positive. i have been a tori fan from the beginning, before LE was even officially released, and i have been to a bunch of her shows, so i have somewhat a basis of comparison. that's the problem (depending on perspective)--there's no comparison. so many things about this tour are different that i can't compare them--band, club atmosphere (like the LE tour!!! :), general admission, ticket fiascos, pre-tour tour, pre-release tour... these things made it different, but apart from that it was just _different_. let me begin by saying that the show started _extremely_ late... slated for 7:30, ?poe? (can't remember his name) came on about quarter til 9, and tori did not grace the stage until 10 (which for those who travel by Metro meant you had to leave the show before it finished). the natives were extremely restless in waiting for her, and at one point were chanting and beating on things. so that shaded my perception of things on its own (not to mention having spent all afternoon on the concrete in front of the club (hi everyone else that was there--really fab people--this is kelley of kelley and rob). i have read other people saying how rude the fans were, and i saw more of that before and during ?poe?'s set than i have ever seen at a tori show. some of the fans waiting outside were a bit belligerent in dealing with the club staff, and with letting people who have not met tori get even near her... and yes, i heard mace declarations from surrounding fans determined not to let anyone get between them and tori. the clincher for me was, while i did not like ?poe?, in the quiet between his songs, someone/some people (?) shouted out TORI TORI... not entirely tori-like, yes? i thought how moritifed she would be if she knew that ANYone had done that... all of this made for uncomfy times, but the sum of that is not what i found displeasing about the show. what i was most unhappy with was her now more muted stage pressence. blame it on her sharing more of the stage this time, but the band really did not play significant roles, in terms of pressence (but ya just gotta notice caton, right? he's _really_ cool). tori was significantly less personal than she has ever been in the past 3 tours. she's had a lot of life changes of recent, which in itself explains a lot. she talked, but she did not seem *into* the crowd. i was very surprised at that, cos i have been DYING for her to do another smaller-venue tour, like LE, cos that is where she had the most impact to me. she did not make use of the smaller venue, but i do not atribute that to a lack of showmanship; rather, she is just a different tori. she's a little harder, less fragile, more private--even on stage. i do have to say, when tori came out on stage, as with most of her shows (there was this guy behind me who talked nonstop at one of the shows on the last tour), the crowd was mesmerized, and totally respectful. the thing is, the music was a fabulous as ever. instead of being so serious about playing, she seemed like she was really having fun up there. it dint seem like she was using the stage to be quite so cathartic this time; rather, just playing good music and having fun. the band was fabulous. they did overpower her voice and piano at times, but on the whole, it was rocking. it shows that despite her recent loss, she is very happy, and doing quite well. i look forward to the bigger tour, although the buzz on the concrete (hey pat!) was that she will be playing the outdoor pavillion here (raleigh, NC), which is death to ambience and personability. i am quite concerened about this... just the same, i am willing to follow tori whenever she goes. dream well all, i am kelley ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Apr 1998 10:41:49 -0400 From: agentorange2@juno.com (Rusty M Shelby) Subject: Atlanta review 4/20/98 April 20, 1998 - Atlanta, GA - The RoxyThe day finally came. Me and 2 friends went down to the Roxy about 4pm. We stopped by to get some coffee first, only to see Tori's bus drive by while we were sitting there. At the same time, "Icicle" was playing over the speakers at the coffee house. Odd. We ran into David Poe at another coffee house accross the street from the Roxy about 30 minutes later. We decided it was time to head in the direction of the Roxy (only 2 blocks away)... we heard people running around going "tori tori tori.. she's on the other side"! So, we walked to the other side of the building to see what this was all about. And there was Tori, signing autographs and meeting her fans. (see pictures on tori.com). We all decided to stand back and watch and let the newbies have their turn, as we had met Tori before.Later after the first meet & greet, we found a place in line and waitied. and waited. But, i must say, we didn't wait as long as the first girl in line that night... she had been there since 8am. We became #200 and something in line. I was waiting for my "companion" to show up. A girl i didn't know, but a friend of a friend who was a big Tori fan and was unable to get tickets to the show. In the meantime, while we all waited for the doors to open and for my companion to show up, I met several new people. Nad from the "precious things" mailing list was there, as well as a few other ears with feet i have met through out the years. Everyone was really cool.I ran into a friend of mine who was #61 in line, and she was waiting for some guy she met on the internet who promised her his other ticket. Turns out this guy never showed, and my companion didn't either (she ended up being at home throwing up, sick, too sick for a tori show). So, it all worked out in the end.Doors open and we all make the mad rush to get inside. But there is a hold up. Remember those vouchers? well, when you go through the line, you have to get in the line that has your name in it. this is done alphabetically a-d in one line, e-h in another, and so on. The person doing the a-d line dropped all of the vouchers and got them out of order, so those people just stood there while the other lines kept moving in. We got in and ran to from of the stage. there was already a good number of people there. But, me being so tall had the advantage. I am sorry if i blocked anybody's view, but i worked for my spot. :) We waited in our spots for almost 2 hours. David Poe came on a little after 8pm. We watched him do his thing.. he was good, but everyone was too excited to really listen to him. During his set, we experienced the first of the crowd shuffels. Some one or some people started pushing towards the end of his set. Squeezing the people in front, but that's ok.. we just pushed back the opposite way. The quit after a minute or two, once they saw we were not playing games today. The time finally came, and tori hit the stage. I will not go into too much detail here, as so many other people have already wrote out what she was wearing, the set list, what the band sounded like, etc. all i can say is AMAZING! i was so impressed. Tori can really rock. this is gonna sound odd, but... while we were all outside waiting in line i was really hoping she would play "god". so, i wrote a verse from the song on my hand.. and guess what.. it worked... during the second encore tori played the song with a full band for the first time possibly since her leno appearance years ago. During "Icicle" earlier in the show, there was fight. fist fight from what i hear. tori just told them to swap tounges and get over it. it was kind of funny actually. After the show, i stayed around to say good bye to all of the people i had met... except one guy from nashville who just kind of left. oh well.. i will email him. Then, on the way to the car, we walked by the back of the Roxy... there were some many people out there waiting for tori to come out. It was a bit chilly and i was so exhauseted from the show, we just left. I had to sleep. It was a great show and a great experience, I wish all of you, who are still yet to see a club show tour, lots of luck. The summer tour of bigger venues will surely have people up and shaking a little boodie. :)-rusty agentorange2@juno.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ web page: (updated 03/28/98) http://www.cantnot.org/rusty _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail.
