However, if you're setting your timer and you're like me, you probably don't want to take any chances anyways and just go ahead and tape the whole program...I even do that with Leno and Letterman even though all I've seen through experience is that they save their musical acts for the end of the program...I'm just paranoid that way...I don't want to miss anything! So if it is at the beginning and you tape the whole program, the nice thing is that you can just tape over any non-Tori content that follows the video! OK, good luck! Cynthia PS. A whole 4 stars on a scale of 1 to 5. Not bad at all. They also drew a cute little picture of Tori with wings made of piano keys. My point in typing this email is to implore you all to write Rolling Stone and request that Tori be asked to do a cover. These addys and so forth are actually for the correspondence letters, but I am going to email them, expressing my happines that they actually reviewed a Tori album without making any references to Kate Bush (I think they didn't) and then I will nicely inquire as to why Tori has never been on a cover in their whole publishing history. I will not be evil though for that is not the way to get a postitive response. Wow, I've been gone for a week and I'm taking all this news a little at a time. Thanks to everyone who helped liberate Merman. She was trapped by those corporate jailors and they were deternined not to let her free. I myself have just finished making my own new tori CD. It's an EP. I call it Previews of the Choirgirl Hotel. It contains 1. Spark (Live from Letterman) 2. Merman 3. Cooling (Live) 4. For Mark (Live) Call it imoral or what you will. I did it and it's kind of hard to go back and change it. I've only listened to all of Spark and the first 30 secs of Rasberry Swirl and Jackie's Strength. I refuse to listen to anything else until the album is released. However, after listening to Merman, I think there was a huge mistake in not putting this song on the album. It's such a touching piece. I think it would have made the perfect lulliby to end the album. If you see Tori at a live show please ask her two questions. 1) Her opinion of it only being availible on the NET and 2)Please ask her to release it as a B-Side. Well, I guess you guys in Florida are having a VERY exciting night right now. I can't wait to hear about the show. Please post your reviews ASAP. And I guees by next week we'll all have the import Spark singles. I can't wait for Cooling. My head is in a rush wondering if it will be accoustic piano, with a little band, with a little strings or what. I personally hope for accoustic piano, or maybe a little strings. If you didn't know, the UK CASSETTE is going to have Spark and Purple People as the B-Side. BTW at Camelot today, they told me that Spark was 100% definently going to be released in the US AFTER the album was released. They had no concrete date, but they said that it would probably be the latter half of May. Buenos Noches, Tripp Gwyn tgwyn@infoave.net ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Apr 1998 20:07:20 From: bastiaan Subject: My Choirgirl review Hi there ! I got a copy of a promotape containing the whole Choirgirl album this week and after listening to it for about 6 times I felt the need to share some thoughts with you guys. If you can't hear any negative things about Tori, maybe you shouldn't read this ! Wait...I'll put on my walkman and listen to the songs one by one while I write about 'em. (so the next 54 minutes I'll be working on this post...). * Spark * Well, most of you must have heard this one already. Great song, strong melody, nice arrangements, haunting vocals, good lyrics ! I consider this to be the right choice for a first single, with good commercial opportunities ! (Though I don't consider that to be really important, don't care about airplay etc. Rather keep Tori a little exclusive !) * Cruel * Rather tribal rhythm, quite different. I think it sounds rather good, though the composition isn't that strong. I really like the trancy / asian vocals towards the end. * Black Dove * An intruiging beginning. Sounds like Peter Gabriel is ready to join her. Nice chorus as well, but...oh my god.... when the "second chorus" comes in ("On the other side of the galaxy"...etc.), I thing there's too much bombast going on. Reminds me of the way the chorus of "The Waitress" comes in. Spoils the song i.m.h.o. * Raspberry Swirl * Let's skip this one...I think it's ugly ! Simple, stupid rhythm ! Maybe the dancefloors will be filled, but I'm remaining on the side. Don't think the commercial changes are too good as well, though Tori must have been inspired by the hit-succes of "Professional Widow". The only good thing is the piano going wild, but it's rather back in the mix. * Jackie's Strength * Nice song ! The orchestra is quite tastefully arranged ! nostalgic lyrics, well sung. Don't think it's similar to "Marianne", except for the orchestration. Though the melody might be a little to mainstream and straightforward for my taste. Well done though.. * Ieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee * Another tribal rhythm + vocalisations. Sounds really catchy ! But dear Tori: Why did you have to spoil it with the loud part. Too much bombast again ! Y'know the song would have been good enough without leaving the main melody. * Liquid Diamonds * This is really one of the most interesting songs on the album ! Wouldn't be out of place on Madonna's "Ray of Light" I guess. Really trancy, melodic structures ! "Emotional Dance" !!! Though it's the longest song on the album, I wouldn't mind if it went on for another couple of minutes. Like in a lot of other songs on the album it shows a new Tori, but this way I don't mind the "progression". * She's your Cocaine * Is this Roxette ? Brrrrr, another ugly one...but wait...the moment the song totally changes into a beatlesque, mysterious melody is just terrific ! Oh, but there comes Roxette again... Couldn't you built a song around the middle part Tori ? (It would have been "Guided by Tori's Voices" !) * Northern Lad * Good song ! Really emotional ! This one makes you want to hold your darling. The "because of the rain" part sound a bit like the "OOhooo-chorus" from Hey Jupiter", but well.. * Hotel * Gee ! This is exciting ! Rather rich, complex structure, lots of tempo-changes. Reminds me of "Space Dog" in a way. The end is really wonderfull ! Is this the same horn-section as on "pele" ? Sounds like the harmonium is back as well (or synths ?) * Playboy Mommy * Great intro, after the end of "Hotel" ! These songs really float into each other. Nice, lush melody. Performed in a nice, laid-back, way in which the emotions are obviously shining through. Oops, the country-ish (steel ?)guitar in the end is really surprising ! Another highlight ! * Pandora's Aquarium * A real piano-suite intro. The melody of the verses isn't that strong, but playfull. Think I do like this song. A good, quiet closing-track of an album which is quite disturbing in some places. Well, mixed feelings about the choirgirls; some of them draw me in, some don't appeal to me and other I find just partly attractive. I used to think each Tori album was better, stronger, less "mainstream" than the one before, but this time I'm not to sure. Ofcourse: It's a good thing to move on, and I totally respect that. I can imagine Tori wanting to make a "band-record" after so many "girl with the piano" years. But that doesn't make the record as stunning as the previous one (Yes, for the time being "Pele" remains my favourite). But you never know...maybe it'll grow and grow. Ofcourse I'm very curious for the new Tour which will start tonight (good luck Tori !). I'm gonna see her here in Holland on June 10th. Which songs shall she play ??? And how will they sound with this band ? I'm very curious what you all think of the album. Please let me know, OK ? (Private or on the list). Have a good Tori season ! Bastiaan ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Apr 1998 00:52:54 -0400 From: Agent Askew Subject: Review:Ft Lauderdale Florida Hello Tori Fans, I just got home from the show and it was too wonderful for words. I've seen tori 7 times now and this show was by far the best I've EVER seen. I don't have a setlist unfortunately but here's a rundown on the songs I do remember her playing - Jackie's Strength* Spark* Winter Precious Things* Putting the Damage On* Waitress* Horses* Black Dove(january)* Playboy Mommy* Cruel* Northern Lad* She's Your Cocaine* Iieee(I think) Upside Down Cloud on My Tongue * - played with band I'm probably missing a few and that is definitely not the order they were performed in. She openned with Cruel and the band was really awesome and a welcome addition in my opinion to her sound. The new songs were very powerful and she played a few oldies with new band twists. Horses was totally different with a nice sparing piano melody. Waitress was totally rocking the club as she screamed "I believe in peace, bitch" over and over again. The song lasted for at least 7 minutes I think. Putting the damage on also had a slight twist with the band adding some light elements including a cello (or that may have been Jackie's Strength, I forget now) Some songs were finally done justice live in my opinion starting with Precious Things. It was pretty faithful to the album version with a few improvisations which only tori can do that made it so much better, including drawing out the Grrrrrrrrl for more than normal (although *I* really couldn't hear it much over the band). I'll add Waitress to it too. The addition of drums and bass really add another element to the song. Let me also point out that she DID NOT play Me and a Gun. I wasn't aware of this until my friend Mollie pointed it out to me. For those who were wondering about when to get to the venue, me and my guest camped for our spot since about 10am and we were the 16th voucher on the list that was kept. Also the venue really didn't honor the number system but they did manage the vouchers as described. You had to present your ID and the voucher for entrance for you and a guest. The guest didn't requre any ID unless they wanted to get alcohol and were over 21. Mollie and I had front row in the pit area which meant we had to put up with much pushing and shoving which lasted all throughout the doors openning, the opening act (which was good but I'm not going to rush out and buy his cd). Thankfully, with tired legs and back from the trying to hold our position, everyone settled down when Tori came out. She was radiant and looked so happy to me. She talked quite a few times telling a story for Winter, about her father taking her for a walk in the snow and the two of them really connecting and then she wrote the song for him, and then there was "our little secret time" when then band walked off and she said "You guys know the b-sides right?" Then she played a wonderful Upside down. She forget the words to Winter halfway through and actually stopped and asked us to continue for her. She started playing again singing what she remembered and then the crowd came through with every voice singing in unison as she played. I never thought I'd be singing one of Tori's songs to Tori herself. She threw in an improvised lyric for her father towards the end. "So did you meet tori?" I know you're asking. Well the doors were scheduled to open at 5:30 (but was actually 5:50) and she was late for her sound check arriving at about 4pm. There were already about 200 people there I estimate and there was no way she could do a normal meet and greet as in past shows. She touched the lives of a few people who managed to get to the front of the railings and then went inside. That's when we started to line up, most people by their numbers, and some time later strains of Precious Things, Spark, and Waitress could be heard through the front doors of the Chili Pepper. After the show was exactly the same thing except it wasn't as hot (it was a scorcher of a day and was even worse in line with all the people packed so tightly). She signed a few autographs and that's when I left with my 3 rolls of tori film. To those of you with vouchers, you're going to have the greatest time of your life. To those who don't, if you're in distance to a show I'd say go anyway because there a few people who didn't have vouchers here and got tickets because some people didn't show. Let me finish with saying she played 2 encores and was on stage for about 2 hours.
