I read this wonderful autobiography by Donna Williams called Nobody Nowhere- An Extradordinary Autobiography of an Autistic and I started reading more about autism so I after listening to Silent All These Years it reminded me of some of the writing in Nobody Nowhere, and how some of reminded me of how other high-functioning individuals wrote of thier condition. Here's a look at the lyrics- "Excuse me can I be you for a while?" Donna Williams wrote of how sometimes when she interacks with people she unconsiosly "mirrors" them. "I've got the anti-christ in the kitchen yelling at me again" Donna wrote that when she was a toddler most of what people said about her was nothing but a bunch of babble, and that anyone trying to communicate with her was just damn irratating. "Scream got lost in a paper cup" Inability to express emotions. "And I've been here...silent all these years" Inability to make oneself understood. "Years go by will I still be waiting for somebody else to understand?" Not every one with autism knows someone with the same afliction, to not know someone with the same condtion is isolating. I hope I haven't over analized this song to death, I just want to say that you have to read Nobody Nowhere or some other autobiography by an autistic to understand what I meant. Lastly, here is some poetry from her book that I thought was pretty good- "Words on the wind, when there calling you in, the words have no meaning when the thoughts have no feelings." P.S. Has anyone but me gone to the Seattle Fringe Festival, and seen Kevin Joyce's A Pale and Lovely Place? Here is a recent posting which includes a clip from the new Q magazine interview ! :) j'ason ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ And further to the 'was Tori influenced by Kate' topic, the new edition of Q features an interview with Tori and includes the following . . . . quote from interview in Q mag 140 (May 1998) by Tom Doyle.... If the songs on Little Earthquakes served to heal the emotional scars of their creator, then the reviews for the album threw up one recurrent comparison : Kate Bush. The debt's there in the songs' skewed perspectives on the world outside, and the singer's contortion of certain vowels. "I'll never forget the first time I heard about Kate," Amos recalls. "I was playing in a club, I was 18 or 19 and somebody came up to me, pointed their finger and said, Kate Bush. I went, Who's that? I wasn't really familiar because Kate didn't really happen in the States until Hounds Of Love. I was shocked because the last thing you want to hear is that you sound like someone else. Then people kept mentioning her name when they heard me sing, to the point where I finally went and got her records. When I first heard her, I went, Wow, she does things that I've never heard anybody do, much less me. But I could hear a resonance in the voice where you'd think we were distantly related or something." So you were never influenced directly by her? "Well . . . . I must tell you that when I heard her, I was blown away by her. There's no question." Did you sing along with the records? "Absolutely. But I knew that I had to be careful, so I didn't voraciously learn her catalogue. I left the records with my boyfriend at the time, because I didn't want to copy her." ~end quote~ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Mar 1998 09:41:51 -0800 From: Beth Winegarner Subject: Cornwall again Ken wrote: > As you quoted below, they reckon it was the castle where Arthur > was reputedly conceived, but it's unlikely he actually lived > there. Like the tones of Ireland -- rich colors, green and red and earth, (which are also present in the American South) are all over BfP, and same with the desert tones of New Mexico on UtP. Anyways, I am going out to Ontario for some auditions around the 1st and 2nd of May, and I just read on the updated Concert Listing that Tori will be playing in Toronto on April the 28th and in Detroit on the 29th. I almost choked on my gum when I read that. Anyways, I was wondering if anyone in the Toronto or Detroit area is going to either of those concerts. I will be going out to Ontario by myself because my friends can't afford the expenses or the time off. I don't know anyone in Toronto, and I feel kinda like a geek travelling alone in a huge city all by myself. Besides, it would be MUCH more fun if I could go with fellow Tori fans. Anyone interested? I'll believe an "on-sale" date if it comes from a credible source (eg. the venue web site or a radio announcement) or if I heard it from several different sources. But I won't put up on-sale dates from the reports that start out with "my brother's friend's next-door neighbor has a cousin who works with a guy who thinks tickets go on sale..." Our tour itinerary came from Tori's management but they don't know anything about on-sale dates, that's left up to the various individual concert promoters. I think my preconceived thought that Tori sounded like Madonna on the the clip I downloaded of "Spark" had floated into my conscious thought. I finally came to my sense and screamed and ran into my room. My sister thought I was being an idiot and my brother asked me what the hell had gotten into me. Oh man, I am going to call that station like crazy now. But I think they only played it because they were doing "Lunar Rotation" (when they play rarely played songs). They've never liked Tori, but damnit I am going to make them like her. Anyone who lives around Houston or in Houston, please bombard the Buzz with requests for Tori. Methinks they will not play her unless she is in high demand since she is not "mainstream". Anyone know when it will be released as a single.
