As you quoted below, they reckon it was the castle where Arthur was reputedly conceived, but it's unlikely he actually lived there. I went there a couple of weeks ago, and the headland that the castle is on is absolutely amazing. The castle itself is no more than a few very low stone ruins, they themselves having been the result of a rebuild in about Richard III's time. Tintagel is actually fairly close to the area where Tori's studio is located, on the North coast up towards Bude at the edge of the county. >The whole region is alive with >ancient Celtic myth and legend, and we all know how important those things >are to Tori. I'll be fascinated to hear whether there's any influence from the area on the new album. Not very likely, though, since I wouldn't say anything of rural ireland shone through on BfP, or New Mexico on UtP. >This is a list of several local legends, including one about a mermaid: >To the westward of the beautiful Cove of Lemorna is a rock which has through >all time borne the above name. It's interesting to note that you can sometimes hear whales singing off the rocks in Lamorna. I've been there trying to spot them / hear them myself, but never had much luck. It's a wonderful place, just about at the edge of the world, and completely on the opposite end of the county from Tintagel. >There are many standing stones, or longstones, widely distributed throughout >Cornwall. More commonly known by the Cornish term "menhir"(men - stone; >hir- long) there are nearly ninety in the Lands End peninsular alone. The rocks down there in Penwith are pretty damn amazing. You only have to look at the stone walls around there to realise that there may have been 10 times as many circles with megaliths; for the last hundreds of years, they've been circling in cattle. >The Merry Maiden Stones >The Merry Maidens of Boleigh, Nr. Lands End, a group of >19 stones in a large circle were most probably originally used for some >long forgotten religious rite but folklore tells a different tale. ... If you ever want to go the Merry Maidens, try and get there for the sunrise. It is an absolutely amazing place, on a high moor-like area in the Land's End peninsula. From there, you can see the sea all the way round the entire country, nearly 270 degrees around you and about 10 miles away. There's a very famous stone near there called the Men-en-Tol, which is a big circular rock with a hole in it. Reputedly, you climb through it as a fertility thing, or to rid yourself of the evil eye, or whatever. It's really lovely, especially since all those stones (and the amazing Lanyon Quoit, which is a huge stone laying on three upright stones) are so completely unspoiled. You can go there and just about be guaranteed to see no one. In fact, that's a scary bit about the Zennor/ Merry Maidens/Men-an-Tol area... It's *chock FULL* of old mine shafts, poorly marked and hundreds of feet deep, and just about no one goes there. If you're there on your own and you fall into one, hope that you land on your head. ===== One of the most beautiful and unknown places, that I hope Tori has found, is an ancient well, not far from those stones. It's in the middle of what is now a marshy glade, high in the bluffs. More than 1,000 years ago, the newcomer Christians built a channel system to carry water from the precious well into the font of a small chapel, which is now ruined and beautiful. The well is still visited by people who are in touch with the ancient ways, and if you find it on a warm summer morning, the old craggy tree that grows out of it is festooned with little bits of cloth and wheat the people have tied to it to make their wish and leave their trace. It is one of the few places around that I truly could believe still holds faeries. ===== Another absolutely amazing place I came across a few months ago is again up on the North coast cliffs. There's a little cove there, where when the wind blows from the north west and the tide is right, generates loads of foam hundreds of feet below on the rocks. When a giant gust blows, the foam is whipped up into bubbles which shoot up the cliff and drift over the top like faeries launched and playing from the sea, slowly drifting through the sky and past bemused cattle browsing round the top. There's a flat rock just at the top of the cliff where we sat and had the bubbles fly over our heads, and someone who'd been there had built a little cairn. ==== Anyway, if anyone is coming over for the tour and wants to know some of the most amazing and hard to find places in the county, feel free to drop me a line. I'll bore your ears off. >I really can't wait to hear the album, for >the obvious reasons, but also to hear what effects Cornwall itself may have >had on the music, as London did with LE, as the Fish House did with UtP, and >as Ireland and Louisiana did with BfP. I certainly don't expect Toriphiles to fly to 4 corners of the globe, searching for that Baltimore single or the original YKTR release. I bought the bootlegs, just like most people here, thinking "if Atlantic won't rerelease it.. well, screw them". But let's not forget how this discussion got started in the first place. We weren't talking about hard-to-find singles and b-sides... we were talking about a legitimate release which is neither rare nor "limited edition", and that's why some of us here can't understand why people would trade for an audio copy of something that is available for a cheaper price than a bootleg. Especially if you consider that Tori could be getting the money, if you bought the original release. And if you really want to use the example of b-sides... Well, reading some of the comments that have been floating around, I just have a question. Given the choice of buying several (oh, let's say 3) singles or a compilation of non-album tracks, would you really prefer buying the bootleg, just 'cos it's cheaper? 'cos that's what it sounds like when I read some posts. Like it was mentioned before, the BFP singles can be bought everywhere online, as well as releases such as Winter, Cornflake Girl etc. Or is buying such a bootleg, just your way of spiting the record industry? Seeing how available some of these items are, I really don't see a reason for buying a beesides-bootleg like "Somewhere over the Rainbow" (BFP compi)... same goes for the RAINN recording. And no, lack of $$ isn't a good excuse, since your hard-earned money just goes to someone (and his attorneys if you want) who had the resources to burn a bunch of songs on a CD. Oh, and Warren... a Toriphile who *doesn't* have LE???... yikes ;-) sabrina P.S. Anyone else fascinated by the lyrics to "Cruel"? (thanks Kelly & Nick!) I was having a conversation with a friend of mine about how a lot of Tori's lyrics can be read in more than one way for example: "I can't believe you're leaving cos me and Charles Manson like the same ice-cream" could be read as " I can't believe your leaving for such a small stupid reason" or "I don't believe that's really why your leaving" This isn't a very good example as the meaning is made clear in the rest of the song, but there are other similar type lyrics which aren't. Also there are lyrics that 'don't make sense' in the conventional way but when you hear them sung you *know* what she's saying ;) So what is the lyric that suddenly you understood?? I have seen the import singles at Best Buy, Circuit City, and {especially} Tower Records. I've also seen them occasionally in places like Border's Books and Music. Blockbuster generally stocks the import singles as well. You can't count on them having it, but you have a pretty good shot at it. If your store doesn't stock it, you might be able to get them to order it. :) Where the CD itself is kept is dependent on the store itself. Circuit City keeps everything all in one place. Best Buy usually puts the import singles in with the albums, although they do have a separate section for singles {but generally they only keep US singles there}. Tower Records has a separate section for imports, and at least my local one is -very- good about keeping the singles separate from the albums. Border also keeps their imports separate here, but they're not as good about keeping the singles out of the album section. In other words, check -everything- for Tori. Check out the singles section. Check out the imports. Check out the album section. :) UK singles generally are two CD sets. One is a regular edition, one is a limited edition. Sometimes these things are actually limited {see the LE and CfG singles}, sometimes they're still easy to come by {UK Talula}. The tracks on these singles are {besides the title track} very different. In the US, there is only one version of the single released. Very rarely, singles are released in both CD and cassette. /nad *************************************************************************** * Nadyne Mielke, CS majour, Southern Tech, Marietta, GA * * * * "I regret to say that we of the FBI are powerless to act in cases of * * oral-genital intimacy, unless it has in some way obstructed interstate * * commerce. The CD was a great compilation, and it revealed lots of talented fans out there. I am currently busy collecting tracks for "Tori Amos Covered 2", and anyone reading this may contribute, of course. Jenn asked: > Ok I've seriously run up my long distance bill this month....... so I > was wondering if anyone has gottten any new news from the Avalon or Mama > kin........... please keep me informmed :) :-) Hi, Jenn. I know this is frustrating, but I assure everyone, there's no way that any of these venues is going to manage to put tickets on sale without it being noted here before they're being sold. Just keep checking the local papers and let the rest of us know when you see anything. I have no doubts that we'll be informed in time enough to buy tickets. There's obviously an embargo on the information until the time for each venue to publicize it comes around, and calling repeatedly will yield nothing. Be seeing you, Richard Handal, H.G. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Mar 1998 18:17:17 -0500 From: Tripp Gwyn Subject: 35 New Girls!! Did anyone read Willy Porter's comment that Tori has recorded 35 songs! I know we'll never get all of them, but I think this will leave us with a lot of B-sides and Movie Ccontributions. I can't wait to see what Tori has covered this time around. Just to throw in my vote I'd love for her to do Live To Tell. I have an MP3 (Thanks to a certain person on this list...) and it's a little muffled, but Tori's version is so much more emotional than Madonna's. Anyone know how many songs Tori recorded in the Pele era? Just wondering what fraction of these 35 we'll get to hear....
