Cornwall is often considered to be the actual location of Camelot, King Arthur's legendary castle. The whole region is alive with ancient Celtic myth and legend, and we all know how important those things are to Tori. Tonight I thought I'd do the Violet thing and poke around for some information on the topic at various web sites, and pass it along to you guys. Who knows if it'll illuminate anything that may be present on this next album, but maybe it'll intrigue us well enough in the meantime... :) - ------------------------------ At http://freespace.virgin.net/david.ford2/tintagel.html we find a little of the Arthurian mythos (note: Tintagel is, or was, the capital of Cornwall): The House of Sap Gorles Sap, so-called Duke of Tintagel (Welsh, Gwyrlys/Latin, Corlius/English, Gorlois) Gorles was a descendant of Pandoff Mawr (or possibly Geidan), a younger son of King Solor of Cernyw (Glywyssing). He was made famous by Geoffrey of Monmouth, through his "History of the Kings of Britain". Here Gorles appears as Gorlois, the Duke of Tintagel and first husband of the beautiful Igerna of Dumnonia. He was probably a governor of Cerniw, the western portion of Dumnonia, under King Constanine Corneu. Geoffrey relates the, now well-known, story of how the High-King of Britain, Uthyr Pendragon, fell head-over-heals in love with Igerna and had Merlin the Magician tricked her into letting him into her bed at Tintagel. Uthyr later killed Gorlois at Dimilioc (St.Dennis) and married Igerna who was, by then, pregnant with his son, the great King Arthur. Geoffrey sets Gorlois' main stronghold at Tintagel Castle (Din-Tagell) though his origins were Welsh. It may either be through coincidence or confusion that Gorles' ancestry stems from Cernyw (Glywyssing), while he lived in Cerniw (Cornwall). - -------------------------------------- At http://www.storyfest.com/devon.htmlhttp://www.storyfest.com/devon.html there are a few photos from Cornwall, including one of Tintagel. (And another of the tower atop the Glastonbury Tor in Somerset, about an hour or so from Cornwall). - ------------------------------------- http://pw1.netcom.com/~kernewek/legends.html This is a list of several local legends, including one about a mermaid: To the westward of the beautiful Cove of Lemorna is a rock which has through all time borne the above name. I have never been enabled to learn any special story in connection with this rock. There exists the popular fancy of a lady showing herself here previous to a storm - with, of course, the invariable comb and glass (mirror). She is said to have been heard singing most plaintively before a wreck, and that, all along the shore, the spirits have echoed her in low moaning voices. Young men are said to have swam off to the rock, lured by the songs which they heard, but they have never returned. Have we not in this a dim shadow of the story of the Sirens? From the book Cornish Folk-Lore by Robert Hunt, Tor Mark Press, Islington Wharf, Penryn, Cornwall, UK TR10 8AT - --------------------------- http://www.gandolf.com/cornwall/introduction.shtml This page too has quite a lot of categories of folklore. - ------------------ http://www.connexions.co.uk/culture/index.htm This site seems to have a number of listings for various aspects of Cornish mythology, including ghost stories, and tales about mermaids, piskies, faeries, knockers, standing stones and 'the little people.' Some excerpts: The Ghost of Charlotte Dymond One of Cornwall's most celebrated ghosts is that of Charlotte Dymond, who was found murdered on the slopes of Roughtor, near Camelford on Sunday 14th April 1844. Her lover, a crippled farmhand called Matthew Weeks was later hanged at Bodmin Goal for the crime, though it is doubtful that he committed it. Since that time, and especially on the anniversary of her death, Charlotte has been seen walking in the area, clad in a gown, a red shawl and a silk bonnet. Sentries of the Old Volunteers stationed in Roughtor were very reluctant to stand duty there, so convinced were they of her ghostly presence. A memorial stone marks the site of her murder, and the story has been immortalised too in "The Ballad of Charlotte Dymond", by Cornish poet Charles Causley. - --------------------- Early one evening, when all the fishing boats bobbed at anchor, and all the fisher families were in church and all the birds at nest, and even the waves rested themselves and came quietly to shore, something moved softly in the twilight. The waves parted without a sound, and, from deep beneath them, some creature rose and climbed out onto a rock, there in the cove of Zennor. It was both a sea creature and a she-creature. For, though it seemed to be a girl, where the girl's legs should have been was the long and silver-shiny tail of a fish. It was a mermaid, one of the daughters of Llyr, king of the ocean, and her name was Morveren. (this whole tale is really nice, about a mermaid who falls in love with a mortal man because of his lovely voice). - ------------------------------- Times have changed in Cornwall, for better or worse. Few who live in the county today have cause to be out and about in the countryside alone whenever or wherever her elfin people may be abroad. Even lesser numbers work underground in search of rich ores the knockers were so expert in finding. In many ways the little people of Cornwall therefore have their haunts to themselves more than ever before, rarely disturbed by a gatherer of samphire or gull's eggs on the cliff ledges, by a lone traveller on a dark moorland track after "day-down", or by miners working at the end of a level. The spread of education, of course, has caused most people to be sceptical even about their existence but in Cornwall, where belief in such things dies hard, such outright scepticism is less noticeable. And the fact remains that, just because you don't believe in these enchanting creatures, they don't cease to exist as a result. - ------------------ There are many standing stones, or longstones, widely distributed throughout Cornwall. More commonly known by the Cornish term "menhir"(men - stone; hir- long) there are nearly ninety in the Lands End peninsular alone. These tall granite blocks often stand alone and the sheer logistics of moving them to their location and erecting them pay tribute to the engineers of Bronze Age times. Some were doubtless used for religious rites whilst others stand as huge gravestones, marking the burial places of ancient folk. Inevitably, legends have grown up around them. The Merry Maiden Stones Cornwall is justly noted for its prehistoric stone circles, megalithic tombs and curious rock formations, many of which have given rise to both charming and gruesome legends. The Merry Maidens of Boleigh, Nr. Lands End, a group of 19 stones in a large circle were most probably originally used for some long forgotten religious rite but folklore tells a different tale. ... Once, nineteen pretty maidens on their way to Sunday vespers were distracted by the playing of The Pipers, now seen as two tall standing stones a quarter mile distant, and strayed into the field, full of high spirits to laugh and dance to their music. A mighty thunderbolt transfixed both pipers and maidens to the spot where they now forever stand, turned to stone for the sin of dancing on The Sabbath Day. - -------------- And for those of you who are truly obsessed, you can get a CDROM tour of Cornwall at http://www.cornwall-net.co.uk/multimed/index.htm :) I find it interesting to relate this latest work, and the location of its recording, to the recording of Led Zeppelin III. Led Zeppelin's first two albums were marked by their hard rock flavors, but with III they went in a more Celtic folk direction with songs like "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp" (named for the countryside where they'd been living and working), "Gallows Pole" and "Tangerine." (Also the bluesy "Since I've Been Loving You," which seems important insomuch as Tori seems to be incorporating bluesy elements into her work, starting back with Voodoo and Amsterdam). (Another side note: "Down By The seaside, which Tori sang with Robert Plant, was recorded here, was was "Immigrant Song," about the Vikings, which no doubt Tori rocks out to whenever she can). Anyway, they lived and recorded in a house called Headley Grange, located in the town of Bron-Y-Aur (pronounced BROM-rawr) in Snowdonia, located in the mountains of northwestern Wales, not far from Anglesea). The music was said to be inspired by the work of Joni Mitchell, Crosby, Stills & Nash, and the Fairport Convention, with whom Sandy Denny sang (she went on to sing "Battle of Evermore" with Robert on Led zeppelin IV). The connections there seem fascinating, in addition to the possibility of influence from the Celtic myths. I really can't wait to hear the album, for the obvious reasons, but also to hear what effects Cornwall itself may have had on the music, as London did with LE, as the Fish House did with UtP, and as Ireland and Louisiana did with BfP. I have every one of his albums. :) I find them both to be very candid and expressive songwriters (though granted, Elton doens't write the lyrics to his music, but Bernie Taupin's lyrics can be pretty complex, like Tori's).. Billy's a pretty straight-forward lyricist, but he can capture mood and emotion VERY well. If I were to vote for my two favorite people that have made (musically) the most difference inmy life, they would be Male: Billy and Female: Tori. :) My father is a pianist as a profession, and ironically enough I never really appreciated the instrument (I prefer strings) until getting into "pop" artists.. I love the integration of piano and rock and roll (if Tori's music can be classified as such.. certainly songs like "God" and "Talula" can I think)... does anyone like Ben Folds Five? BFF and Tori are about all I listen to anymore :) Well and the Spice Girls, shhh don't tell. *expects flame war to ensue, but oh well :)* I think Tori would agree with girl power, and I don't care what any of you think! ;) kahlan :) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Mar 1998 23:36:25 -0700 From: allthegirlshateher@juno.com (Warren C. If so, someone explain to me the diff. Ok, I'm probably way-off here, but I figured the difference between bootlegging a show and copying from a video (altho both are seen as "wrong" by certain people), is that an official release such as the RAINN video, is copyrighted. And even tho Tori might be performing a show, where she sings songs that have been officially released, the live recording in itself, doesn't have a copyright. Erm... did that make sense? I assume that's the difference and also the reason why the RIAA has a problem with people putting up wav.s or mp3s of officially released songs, while it can't do much about mp3's taken from bootlegs (of course the RIAA hates bootleggers nonetheless) No one has a problem if you tape something off a video. If I remember correctly, that wasn't Nadyne's objection. The objection was that if you choose to tape something off a video, don't trade.. or even worse, sell it to someone, (and vice versa don't buy it), since this release is something that can be bought legally for a cheaper price than any seller will charge you. So if you must have this show in some sort of audio format, tape it for yourself and have a nice day, or as Nadyne suggested, get yourself a copy off an *audience* recording, if you can't tape audio/video. The last couple of weeks, I"ve seen the RAINN show, as a CD bootleg in several stores, going for prices such as $25-30... a blatant rip-off considering that the boots I saw didn't even contain the complete show.... and funny, considering the official release could be bought across the road at HMV for $20 (I know I know... it's video not audio, but I'm talking prices here) sabrina ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Mar 1998 02:54:09 -0700 From: Cheryl Pike Subject: Who Tori should cover... You have bought the video - as such, although you aren't technically entitled to make backups, I don't think, a record company would be far more lenient if you used your own personal CD-Writer to burn a couple of CDs containing the concert (which would, after all, only cost about £6 at most) (assuming you don't have a coaster maker of a drive) as long as you didn't sell them for profit, there would be very little they can do about it, and would want to. Remember, there's never been an end user prosecution for audio or video piracy, certainly in the UK. The new thread started earlier as to which song you would like to sing with Tori prompts me to ask - have the members of Precious Things ever recorded a tribute tape? This has happened with great success on many othe mailing lists I've been on, and we've been able to hear some hidden talent out there performing favourite songs. If not, what does anyone think about giving it a go? I'd be happy to co-ordinate the project. The basic thing is that everyone records a different track, sends it to a central location who then compiles it, and he then sends a copy to say 5 people (each in a different country) who then make copies in return for a blank tape + return postage. It's therefore a completely free project, and gives everyone a little something to listen to. Alternatively we could do it for a small fee in support of RAINN? I know there's plenty of talent out there.. Just an idea. I *love* Ben Folds Five! Saw them on a show on PBS with Beck, and I was hooked! They're a funky group because some of the songs are simply designed and easy to play, but still communicate a lot ("Brick"), but others are wild and entertaining too, with lots to them ("One Angry Dwarf . . ."). I think Ben Fold's playing reminds me more of Tori's than, say, Sarah McLaughlan (I know ~ can't spell!) or Fiona Apple. Hmmm . . . I'll have to think about this for a while! :-) ~geministar* ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Mar 1998 15:33:07 +0100 From: "Mike Gray" Subject: Newport Show re-scheduled. Hi Everyone... I'm surprised that no-one else has mentioned this yet, but the show at the Newport Centre, Gwent has been re-scheduled. The information was given by the promotors to the venue on Thursday of last week. The dates has been changed from the 19th of May to the 28th of June. All tickets are still valid, or face value refunds can be obtained from the point of purchase. No reason has been given. As far as I know, this is the only date that has had any changes made. I called several other venues, and they said that their shows were going ahead as planned as far as is currently known. I'll keep everyone posted should I hear more. I suppose you can think of we boot collectors as people who are not satisfied with purely what the record companies or artist want for us to buy, and we want every last damn unknown song, remix, alternate versions, etc physically available. Reasons the prices are so damn high-The continuis crackdown on bootleg manufacturerers hasn't helped the industry, and it can be risky importing large amounts of import CDs to another country. (KTS, the greatest high quality bootleg company ever on this planet, alas was forced to shut down thier operations in Italy.) Getting prosecuted is not cheap, one needs money for a good defense lawyer, thus in a way the high prices cover the possible legal bills that they could be facing in the future. Still, as long as there is demand, there will be supply. As for the money bootleggers can make off a concert, you'd be lucky to get payed $500 for one. Its a myth you can make a whole lot for discovering a long lost track, if the record companies aren't interested in publishing it, you'll have to satisfy yourself in selling/trading it elsewhere. You don't make millions in this business. As I mentioned before, only the fans that are fanatical enough to spend that money do it. A bootlegger might make enough to cover the vet bills (unless they can go to every damn concert, there are some out there who do but it takes a certain relentless spirit to do it) but champagne wishes and hollywood dreams it ain't. If you want real money making something forbidden, try drugs and pornography. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Mar 1998 17:14:30 GMT From: Alicia Subject: re: a new thread If I could sing a song with Tori it would be Cornflake Girl. I would think copying from the video would be more > acceptable to the suits than not! > Am I wrong here? If so, someone explain to me the diff. The difference here is that there is a legitmate release available of the video. Therefore, if you make a copy of it and sell/trade for it, you are circumventing the sale of the legit release. You're making a bootleg {well, "pirate" is the actual term, I believe} of a legitimate release. Whereas when you're sneaking a recorder into a concert, there is {most likely} no other outlet for that. And if you're just using it for trading, and not making a profit on it, it's very different from making a copy of a legitimate release. In one instance, you're taking profits away from Tori and Atlantic because you're trading/selling copies of something that's legitmately available; in the other case, you're not hurting their profit margin 'cause the recorded concert is unreleased material.
