Also "This Must be the Place (Naive Melody)","City of Dreams"," Heaven". "Take me to the River" would be nice as well (The T-Heads are covering this from Al Green and somebody, but I am more familiar with their version). I really wish they would re-release the "Stop Making Sense" movie to tape someday (or even to theatres). Some other I can think of off-hand Concrete Blonde - "Dance along the Edge", "Joey", "Bloodletting", "Tomorrow, Wendy" (particularly the last one, although I think it is actually a Wall of Voodoo song, the live version on "Still in Hollywood" is really good). Oingo Boingo - "Stay","Try to Believe","Mary","We Close Our Eyes","Elevator Man" (I could go on and on) Leonard Cohen - Tori helped introduce me to his work (another thing to be thankful to her for). "Bird on a Wire","Everybody Knows","First We Take Manhatten","Coming Back to You" I am sure there are all sorts of people and songs that I am forgeting that will come to me later. I'm not 100% sure if it's true, but it doesn't sound totally off the wall. Though you guys might be interested. Remember I didn't write any of this... From: Justin Joseph Goellner Subject: WRUR got the choirgirl hotel sampler yesterday.. and... Date: Thu, 26 Mar 1998 13:29:28 -0500 Organization: University of Rochester the radio station i dj at and do music directorial stuff for, WRUR in ROchester, NY got the 4 song sampler ep yesterday, airborne express from atlantic recods. isnt that funny? i'm surprised nobody else has posted about it... here's the rundown.. the cover art (if it's the same as the album) is msotly black with a vertical painting or drawing or distorted photo (you cant really tell) of tori running away.. it's her back view- red hair flying, long blue skirt with a back slit, and no top! (oi). inside has the promo sneak peak tour dates which have already been posted. it also came with a recycled piece of cardboardish paper with the lyrics to spark (are they already out? does anyone want them posted?) the songs. okay. #1- spark. i wasn't totally excited by this track- i liked it, tori's voice is still amjazing. it has a full band alternative music kinds feel- too little piano. it's funny- in the bridge of the song (where a normal band would have a guitar solo) there's a PIANO SOLO!! hahaha. anyways.. it's not bad- i mean, tori could sing the phonebook to the sounds of a garbage disposal and i'd love it. #2- jackie's strength. this track is so much like marianne from pele except less creative. again, her voice is kicking much ass but the lyrics are skimpy and repetitive.. starts off with mostly piano and piano remains strong throughout the track- sounds a little like older tori stuff without the flair she usually has. still pretty good though. #3- raspberry swirl. this is SO MESSED UP!!!! it's totally like dance tori... lots of vocal distortion (the vocals reminded my friend and i of portishead on the new album), and really upbeat piano dance music.. it's kinds cool. if i didn't have such high expectations of tori, i would love this track. it's really unique. and #4- playboy mommy. this one is by far my favorite- awesome lyrics, perfect blend of piano elements and band/ other instruments.. .kinda midtempo. her voice is so calm + soothing on this track i love it. i don't know what else to say about it... so that's it. a few general comments: my oither friend who heard it noted it sounded much influenced by Y Kant Tori Read, and after closer listening i agreed. i mean it's by no means the same, but i see the connection.. all of the songs hover around 4 minutes long give or take a few seconds... her vocals have gotten really uh.. out there? she has lots of little stylings that flavor these songs.. i personally like them but i can see them becoming a big topic of debate. another note my friend had was how her songwriting seemed so unfocused compared to LE and UTP.. he thought pele was a departure but in comparision, this is radically different. she produced and wrote everything again.. (self indulgent??) :) i like it all- but like i said, i'd think the sound of her puking would be graceful. so... i hope i've helped satiate some of your curiosities... justin __**__ / \/ \ jg003g@uhura.cc.rochester.edu * cutepuke@innocent.com \ / cutepuke@yahoo.com * glittrboy@hotmail.com \ / justin goellner \ / http://uhura.cc.rochester.edu/~jg003g/ \/ * ** Tripp Gwyn tgwyn@infoave.net ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Mar 1998 22:03:06 -0000 From: "Mike Gray" Subject: Re: Choirgirl Hotel 4 track Promo Hi Guys.. >#3- raspberry swirl. this is SO MESSED UP!!!! it's totally like dance >tori... lots of vocal distortion (the vocals reminded my friend and i of >portishead on the new album), and really upbeat piano dance music.. it's /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ I'm a huge fan of Portishead, but the idea of Tori doing trip-hop? "She's convinced she could hold back a glacier... but she couldn't keep baby alive." I'm guessing that this girl is very strong willed and figuratively is able to hold a glacier. We all know that glaciers are huge, etc.. and this would inply her strength... or at least the strength she thinks she posesses. But it isn't enough to keep her child alive... and that is the ironic part. She thinks she is strong-willed to overcome even the largest obstacles, but she couldn't keep her baby alive. And as I think about it, I hope this woman isn't implying that *SHE* is the one to blame for the miscarriage... =~( But anyway, the loss of her child is greater than any tangible obstacle (the glacier). It's a beautiful metaphor! God I love tori! =D ANyway, in these lyrics: "She can crawl like a glacier/But she couldn't keep baby alive". I could just picture and hear the piano in my head. *Very spiritual* But what I wanted to comment about was Playboy Mommy. ANd how "the little one" helped be a muse for this song. Just reading the lyrics made my eyes well up with tears. I admire Tori for once again being able to express herself and survive with her problems by singing about them. Just knowing that she writes these songs that everyone has access to, it's like reading a book. Or a bio on Tori. She is like crystal ball (not a faux or anything) but us being able to see into her. When I read the "lyrics" to Playboy Mommy, I saw a motherly Tori as the girl struggling with her angelic daughter. This line "Those Angels can't ever take my place" really got to me. Knowing that the character of this little drama as I put it, cared for this child so much. It reminds me of my life, but from a different perspective. Because my mother died when I needed her most, but no angel can fill her place. More thought provocing lyrics are: Don't judge me so harsh little girl You got a playboy mommy come home But when you tell them so just me name cross that bridge all by your lone little girl, they'll do you no harm they know your playboy mommy but I'll be home I'll be home to take you in my arms The last line is a great clincher! Oh, I know Tori will make a great mommy when the time comes. *sigh* ok, I'm getting all emotional now. But anyway... sorry to those who really don't care what I think... but I just cant wait for the album to be released! Or to hear these songs!
