Why is it ok for her to be friends and collaborate with Trent Reznor but not do a cover of a marilyn Manson song? Trent made Manson what it is.. Tori's magic comes form her appreciation of emotion, and whether or not you like Marilyn Manson's music, it is quite compelling and emotional if you give it a chance. I personally would love to see Tori do something like Beautiful People.. how is that any different from 'I wanna smash the faces of all the beautiful boys, those Christian boys"? Basically Marilyn is expressing the same exact sentiment from the male perspective. Don't judge a book by it's cover, though the hype I admit draws away fromt he music. I guess I must be more brain-dead then I thought, so would like to publically apologize for any misunderstanding of what my post was about. I completely agreed with what woj and King C wrote (please see prior post if you really care), and was trying to point out the fact that they were having to lament the lack of patience among some EwF is something I find sad. Some folks are excited about the way the club tour is being handled, some are disappointed and that is understandable. My post was directed to certain posters who blast Tori and/or her management and make inflamatory statements. Neither woj or King C did that, nor has ever done that. I hope that no one else was offended, and if so, I apoligize for that also. The club that Tori will be playing in Chicago on April 30 (Yeah!!!!), The Park West, is an awesome venue for Ms. Amos. The scene you described - tables and chairs, multiple levels for great sightlines, capacity of under 500 (I believe), great atmosphere, etc. - perfectly describes this cozy club. I was lucky enough to win a seat at a recording studio performance for only 30 people a couple of years ago, during which time I met Tori Amos. Obviously, this will always be the "peak" of my Tori experiences; but seeing her in such a small club venue AND with a live band may prove to be a close second. Anyhoo - I didn't want to "rub it in" that Chicago Toriphiles are getting a great opportunity, but if any of you are midway between Chicago and any other tour date, you should consider Park West a high priority. Hello, I love it when we talk about which songs we like and things like that, although it always feels kind of strange to post after so long... Most emotional songs: =)Cloud on my Tongue It's beautiful, and sad and emotional... ohhh! =)Baker Baker Sad sad sad, but one of my favorites =)Horses "and if there is a way to find you I will find you. but will you find me..?" so sad! =)Mother No comment, it would take embarassing ages to explain why. =)Alamo it's very emotional, I think! maybe some people will think it isn't.. Happy Songs: =)Talula Happy happy, rythm and all. =)Silent all these Years She's happy because she won't have to be silent anymore - -Happy Phantom Happy happy happy! Wow! - -Tear in Your Hand She's happy because she's over the guy finally, and she realized how little he's worth Sexy songs: =)Icicle =)Leather =)Sister Named Desire All this IMVHO. I can see it now...All the people that just came to see Ani would wonder why the hell all the Tori fans are just sitting there listening instead of getting up and stuff, and all the Tori fans would think the Ani fans very disrespectful. But I would definitly like to see them tour together and they should cover some of each other's music too. As for covers Tori should do, I think Pulse by Ani DiFranco Mint Car by The Cure More by Sisters of Mercy Last Night on Earth by U2 Down in a Hole by Alice in Chains Release by Pearl Jam Tori's sexy songs, I think, are CALS Leather Hurt (cover of NIN) Now for a little something that may put a little chuckle into someone's day: A few days ago, I was on the phone with my friend, and Crucify came on the radio. My friend's little sister starting singing along, but she made a minor mistake in interpreting the words. She sang: Cruisin' by myself, everyday, I'm cruisin' by myself. so anyway, i thought that was funny. later days **Tory** ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Mar 1998 17:49:37 EST From: Toiletbag Subject: Here. in my head. hello. i was wondering if anyone knows anywhere i can find this track online. in any format... preferably mp3 or realaudio. or if anyone would be willing to copy it for me on a tape.... please email me privately to spare the other list members.. thanks.! - --marisajo. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Mar 1998 17:48:26 EST From: Adam Ares Subject: Re: pre-ordering? well, i've seen places that deliver preorders the same day as it gets released, and i've even seen it promised the day before, but i really wouldn't trust any of 'em. i'm more of a go-out-and-buy-it-yourself kinda guy, personally.. 'cuz then not only are you not at the mercy of ups, but you get that happy, glowing "eeeee, i'm holding the new tori cd and i'm walking with it to the register and soon it will be *mine*!" feeling. you all know what i'm talking about ;) - -adam ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Mar 1998 16:56:17 -0600 From: lush Subject: Re: Tori and Ani > Does anyone know if these two are friends or anything?? Just curious... actually, i have a few bootlegs on which ani does quite amusing tori impressions, and when she was on modern rock live, someone asked her if she would like to work with tori, and she said that she hadn't yet met tori. so no, they're not friends, i don't know if tori even knows of ani's existance (although that's probably impossible now, what wif all the publicity ani's been getting lately). a every turkey dies, but not every turkey truly lived. Thought I'd throw in yet another few pennies with my thoughts on some of the latest threads. First off: Emotional Songs:hey Jupiter, Winter, Me and a Gun, Little Earthquakes, China Happy Songs:Mr. Zebra, CALS, Tear in Your Hand, Talula, Horses Sexy Songs:Leather, I'm On Fire, Icicle, Little Amsterdam Funeral Songs: Happy Phantom!! (I intend to use this one at my own) Another comment: the other night I was listening to my tape of songs for bad moods, which has hey Jupiter on it. I was comparing it to some of the other songs and thinking about what it means to interpret songs. Personally, I think it makes the song much much richer if you can "decipher a message" than listen to a literal narration of an event/emotion. Because it's kind of like you've got a secret about what you "know" the song means. As I said the other day, "The music of Tori Amos allows us to become voyeurs of ourselves."...what do you all think? About what it means to get through the layers of a song bit by bit rather than just listen? Just wondering! About what it means to get >through the layers of a song bit by bit rather than just listen? Just >wondering! Erin, Thanks for such a thought provoking topic. Yes, I dig and personalize and figure out (with the help of my secret spy decoder ring) what these songs are *really* saying. It is absolutely amazing how Tori Amos learned all about *My Life* and found it touching enough to write 4/5 albums to relate to the world how *I* feel! ;) Is that the feeling you were talking about? the *killing me softly* syndrome? Yes, I do this, especially when I can *watch* her sing, like on a video or TV show. I'm much more a visual person than an auditory one, so I can understand the words better if I see her sing them. I will never forget watching the RAINN concert on Lifetime and for the first time, understanding, Truly Understanding the meaning of the "3 days" line in Me and a Gun. After listening to it constantly for almost 5 years, having seen her in the same concert the evening before, I had never grasped the significance of the line--until I *saw* her sing it. Then it hit me in the back of the head like a 2x4, my jaw hit my chest and tears began pouring from my eyes. It changed the entire song for me, while I felt like *such an idiot* for not getting it before this time. Coming to my own conclusion on what "Tuna Rubber, a little Blubber in my Igloo" meant really made the rest of the song so much more meaningful to me. Yes, I think Tori's lyrics *make* you have to be a little narcissistic in interpretation, or in other words, you have to put your own experiences to the words and that causes the lyrics to be even more meaningful to you. Yes, there are those who will never understand why some of us go this deeply into the music and lyrics (you know, like *awesome, the club plays the dance mix of PW, Tori Rocks!*), why we spend so much time within our own heads. Because to truly appriciate all the different layers of Tori, you must first strip yourself down as naked as she, and tell yourself your own truths, and a whole lot of people do not feel comfortable doing that ever, much less to *just understand a song*. I would be fasinated to hear others thoughts on this topic. btw, I hope that when folks hear someone request music for a funeral, they do write and make sure the requestee is ok or if s/he needs any help. Personally, I find it a frightening request with *no* context surrounding it. just my opinion, once again.
