The lyrics for the song are as follows as sung by an Indian Female Vocalist: Change my pitch up, smack my bitch up Change my pitch up, smack my bitch up Change my pitch up, smack my bitch up This lyric was lifted from an 80's rap song entitled: Give the Drummer Some by Ultramagnetic M.C.'s. Prodigy has been quoted as saying to them the lyric means: doing anything at an intense extreme like bein gon stage and producing a extreme manic energy. There is a lot of debate surrounding this song and I understand that the National Organization of Women (NOW) has lobbyed against the group and this song because they believe it advocates violence against women. Tori's comment--take ahold of a woman's hand escort her to the abortion clinic-- is valid. That is an extereme action--it requires a vast amount of strength to hold onto that woman's hand while people spit, throw stones and insults. Not to mention flying Bibles and Biblical passages. But I think we missed a point here. Music is a dialogue. When Snoop sings to all the bitches and hos. Is he speaking to you? Only if you beleive that you are a bitch or a ho. Well, honey only you can change yourself. Don't sit in your chair wearing an uncomfortable corset with the strings pulled too tight. Do something about it. Anger is a powerful tool if used correctly. Anger can incite change. It is important to understand we all bring something different to the table so what means one thing to Tori or to Prodigy will mean another to me. For example, it may be someone else's dream to fly to London to muster up the courage to deliver a message to all the hecklers at Speaker's Corner in Hyde Park but perhaps that isn't my dream because I have already experienced that. I think people need to look beyond the lyrics--where did they come from. What do they mean to the artist? How are other musicians songs responding? What is the dialogue? I am not advocating violence here. I never could especially as I have dedicated my life to furthering the advancement of humanity through my field of criminology. I have worked long hours in rape crisis centers and have held many a hand in the court room. It has taught me that we need to respect each other; there is a unity in diversity. If something makes you angry--do something to change that situation. make a difference. I apologise for this little diatribe--I just get a little upset when people point the finger at a song or a film as the root cause of all evil but do little to cahnge things and I am not referring to Tori here but countless others in my life. I just wanted to comment on Ruth's post 'cos I think these points she mentioned are valid, and I agree with them. I can honestly say I was a little surprised when I first read Tori's comments on the Prodigy song. Knowing she so readily defended the equally controversial "Rape Me" by Nirvana, I wondered why she was so ready to condemn this song. But I'm not blaming her, 'cos I can imagine her feeling a little closer and understanding Kurt more than she could understand a member of the Prodigy. The point is that anyone can interpret a song the way they want, and if some take lyrics literally... fine, others might see it differently. "Smack my bitch up" might not mean "Beat up your wife", just as "Rape me" might not mean what it says, or "Crucify" doesn't mean that Tori's sitting in her room, hammering nails into her hand, while the rest of her is all chained up. >I think people need to look beyond the lyrics--where did they come >from. What do they mean to the artist? How are other musicians >songs responding? What is the dialogue? Exactly. I don't think it's always fair to blame a band for *your* interpretion of a song, even if the lyrics seem to point towards it... at least don't blame the band until you really are sure, and it seems Prodigy did give their meaning to it, just like Kurt did. In this case, what made the Prodigy song more controversial was the fact that they released an equally controversial video with that single (the original was banned from MTV I believe). This didn't exactly make them any more popular. The last I heard the vice president of MTV networks was female and a somewhat feminist one too, who double-checks every video looking for signs of female-abuse, so it's not surprising that any remotely pro-rape/pro-abuse theme (in her eyes that is) gets shot out immediately. I'm not saying those songs don't exist, and if they do, by God they should be banned, but it's also important to take an objective view and figure out what exactly the band is saying, and if everyone really sees it that way. >I apologise for this little diatribe--I just get a little upset when >people point the finger at a song or a film as the root cause of all >evil but do little to cahnge things No apology needed (well, from me at least, unless my post has annoyed everyone, in which case I apologize as well). I just think that most people can't do any better than blame a song or movie for any sort of evil... for some it's just easier than blaming themselves or taking some responsibility. Sure, it's easy to say Pearl Jam's video for "Jeremy" made some kid shoot members of his HS, or that "Natural Born Killers" made some psychos run around and massacre people, but these individuals had to be pretty screwed up to begin with, if they let a lousy song or movie influence them like that. So yeah, a song is powerful and can be "evil" just as it can be "good", but what makes it that, is the experiences you yourself have had, and what you make out of that song. sorry for the lack of Tori-content... love y'all sabrina ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Mar 1998 11:21:55 EST From: Cindergirl Subject: Re: Her Kind/Anne Sexton In a message dated 98-03-16 20:38:48 EST, dawn@kalama.doe.Hawaii.Edu writes: << Tori connections to Sylvia Plath poems. >> i was just wondering...if anyone knows of any websites with her poetry on it, could you email me the URL? ah for the tori content now. i finally heard spark in its entirety (sp?) and it was wonderful. i can't wait for the new album. :) yippee. k gotta go. later everyone **tory** ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Mar 1998 13:35:58 -0600 (CST) From: Simon Booth Subject: Re: Tori in Texas At 12:12 AM 3/13/98 -0500, you wrote: > >hey, guys, is there anything at all we can do to get Tori to play >somewhere in Texas, or maybe, if not IN Texas, somewhere even remotely >NEAR Texas?? She's sings background vocals on some songs on all three albums (possibly YKTR, too, but I can't recall for sure, and can't verify this from here). She also was Tori's masseuse on the DDI tour, largely so she could keep Tori's bum wrist working. (And she did a marvelous job of it.) Beenie has also done a bit of background vocal work *with* Tori, such as on an album by Ferron. I can come up with more specific citations of recordings on which Beenie or songs she's written have appeared, but it'll have to wait till I have more time to assemble it. And maybe one that doesn't contain the following "information": (Q) What did they do to the piano used in Bells for Her? (A) I don't have the details on this quite right; soon, I'll try to transcribe Tori's comments about this from an interview in Atlanta... but .... Eric Rosse and some other guy (Phil Shenale) took an ordinary piano and detuned it down an octave, and modified it by adding things like paper or wires to the strings. But it's definitely just a heavily modified piano; it's *not* a glockenschpiel or a harpsichord or anything whacked like that.... ___________________________________________________________________ Yeah--we wouldn't want Tori playing anything as whacked as a harpsichord, would we?! (BTW, glockenspiel is the correct spelling.) Maybe citing the actual date and name of a publication would even be relevant. Maybe I'm an unforgiving hard-nose. I had actually never read the "FAQ" until fairly recently, and I must admit to having been shocked. The only thing that kept my anger in check that such a ludicrous document is out there and purporting itself to be anything like an official FAQ is that is was so completely laughable that I didn't see how anyone could begin to take it seriously. Tori's life and career has been extremely well-documented in many places. I suggest everyone get the official bio by Kalen Rogers, as that's a pretty decent starting point-- Tori Amos : all these years : the authorized illustrated biography / by Kalen Rogers. London ; New York : Omnibus Press ; New York, N.Y. : Exclusive distributors, Music Sales Corp., c1994. 116 p. : ill. ISBN: 0711948275 (UK) 0825614481 (US) If you can't find it or can't afford it, try getting it from a library. You can easily read it in one night. I read real slowly, so I know even those in the same boat can read it in one night. I want to caution folks not to believe every little thing they ever read about Tori, even in this official bio. Not all the basic fact-checking was done as it should have been, and a few things in the official bio such as Tori's age when her poppa died are wrong. I wish it were simple to bring new folks up to speed on the basic stuff. I heard that some folks on the newsgroup are reworking the FAQ. I wish them well. I can't imagine that anything they're likely to come up with will be free of controversy, undeniably accurate, and that it will erase the general demeanor of the one Raven is referring to here, which I find to be rather cutesy, and even condescending. I think they seem to be going totally in the wrong direction with what someone showed me they were doing to revise the FAQ. I think it needs to be mightily *pared* *down*. I can't imagine why anyone would ever think that the address and phone number of Tori's high school would have had a place in the thing. I find that bizarre. Sorry if this steps on the toes of anyone who contributed to the current FAQ. I have to be honest. But the good news, as I say, is that there is plenty of information about Tori available. I suggest starting off (surprise) with Michael Whitehead's fabulous web site, and go one from there. A Dent In The Tori Amos Net Universe http://www.aye.net/~mikewhy/toriamos.html Keep your wits about you as you read things. Whose site is it on? Why are we supposed to believe what they have to say about Tori--or about anything else, for that matter? Do they cite their sources? That's important! Folks can mis-remember, commit raging typos, or make up *anything*! In this age of huge amounts of what purports to be information all over the place, by comparison, there seems to be little knowledge. What do all the things which are supposedly facts mean when added together? Do they paint a consistent and expressive picture of the given topic? What overall meanings does *that* present us with? Forget about collecting facts floating in space. Collect knowledge and understanding. Always. Those of you on this list for a while may feel that I pound into the ground the idea that one must be careful of one's sources, not simply believe anything because someone bothered to type it out, etc. I can live with that.
