Sometimes it seems easier to do that here because I don't know any of you and you won't be as quick to critise. It seems strange I went from being the happiest girl this side of the sea (as I held Tori tickets in my hand) to the most mephitic person alive. I found out that I may have cancer and well I am an American living in Britain so i am not covered under the NHS. So, I will be forced to pay private rates for my treatment which of course I cannot pay as I am a PhD. student in criminology. In the middle of this crisis, my love leaves me. He says he cannot take the distance any longer (he is in NYC). This could not have come at a worse time. Not only because of my health but because of the tour. After all I met him on the Pele tour. I suppose it is time for me to make a few decisions. I think I may leave my PhD. behind return home to NY and get a job--preferable one with insurance. It should not be too much trouble finding a job after all I do have a master's degree. Where is my happy ending? Hmmm I know she's in there somewhere I just have to look a little harder to find her. But right now I cannot see her through the anxiety and tears. I feel like I am living in Plato's cave--chained to the wall only able to see the shadows dancing at the mouth of the cave. Shadows that hold the keys to my fears. These shadows become more and more distored the longer I sit. I know the solution is to run outside, dance in the rain, take a few photos, hug some trees. Whoever writes it get royalties, the musicians get a chunk, etc. So instead of being paid up front, Toni Braxton was given a line of credit. That was her problem. She maxed out the credit cards. Tori Amos writes, plays, sings and produces her own music. Honey, nobody is dipping into Tori's pot without her knowing, and she has one of the best managers in the world. Don't worry bout Tori going bankrupt. Her great-grandchildren will *still* be collecting royalties. IMHO, of course. I'd be concerned that Tori would start producing music not from her heart about as much as I'd be concerned that the Pope would become a Methodist. Her entire history has led her to where she is today: Success gained by virtue of tuning into that deepest, innermost voice within her heart and soul, and expressing it through her unique combination of skills as a writer and player. She's been arranging her music for bands since her mid-teens, if not earlier. She used to try to cater to the tastes she imagined others would apply to it in attempts to shape it into something palatable which would please *them*. There is every indication that she intends to continue pleasing herself, as it's been only since she began doing *that* that her music at all became successful. > Anyone else have the same fear? Certainly not me. I have more respect for her musical sensibilities than I do for those of anyone else I can think of. *My* concern is that the ever- refined sharpness of her edge will demand even more of my time and attention than did the whole Pele era, which still occupies much of my time. I have ordered from IGG a few times, the calender and 2 CD's. Except for a slight problem with my name (it was taken from my return lable which had my married name, as opposed to my check with my *real* name) I had very satisfactory service from IGG and have communicated with Maura several times. When Ryan first posted about all this, I sent Maura a copy to let her know what was being said and to get her version of this RAINN brochure problem. She answered, quite satisfactorily, that they had ONE (1) brochure that had been bought from a collector who was selling out. Since they *IGG* had been charged and thereby bought it, they found nothing wrong with charging for it. Understandable mistake in my opinion. Then they neglected to update their webpage and remove it when it was sold (if I understood correctly). IGG's biggest fault is being overworked and understaffed. This is a *Mom & Pop* business, owned and run by two people. I think requesting a donation to RAINN in the amount of $1500 is absurd. This is not CD Now. I think a request of $50 donated to RAINN (5x the amount recieved for said brochure) plus the money already paid to the collector who sold it in the first place is enough of an apoligy for what was essentially a careless mistake. I would like to see more positive reviews of IGG, and perhaps being informed so abrubtly about consumer dissatisfaction will bring about improved customer service with a smile. But I personally understand being overworked and letting the things that don't seem important at the moment slide. So perhaps a bit of patience is required, no matter what on-line service you use. I haven't been screwed yet, and I haven't really found a small operation that doesn't need a small reminder of my order. That's life in cyberspace. So I am asking for a bit of temperence and forgiveness. I understand Ryan's outrage, but I don't believe he knew all the facts. I hope some thought will be given to my proposal on all sides. I'd just like to put my 2 cents (thats about all i have right now) in about IGG. I've dealt with them for a few years now and I have never, myself had a problem with them before either. I have alot communicated with Maura and she is a really nice and helpful person. I've given their name and number out to several Tori fans looking for items. They've always given me good service, so I can only give out good word on IGG. I always agree with everything that Bethey had to say about the RAINN brochures. Since this is a small business, i think that given amount is a bit *too* much, and agreed that 50 bucks would suffice. [...snip...} >Anyone else have the same fear? I can't imagine for a second not liking Tori's work. For me, it's never been strictly what she's done as much as where it's come from. THAT'S what's interesting to me, and that's what I relate to. The feelings, the expression. And the musicianship used to translate those things into something I can *feel* -- not just on a conscious level, but on an instinctive one. I don't know why, but I'm in a romantic mood today, so pardon me while I wax rhapsodical.... For me, Tori's music is like baking. When you bake, you start off with the individual ingredients and they're each special in and of themselves, but they're WAY more interesting all put together. You have your eggs, and the flour, and the sugar, and the pans and Crisco and all that crap. Eggs and flour are nifty enough alone, but when you mix them up, you get cake. Or donuts. Or bread. You can make a million things. And as you go along, it gets more and more complex. You don't sit down to eat raw dough and say, "Mmmmm, great bread". It takes an entire process to turn it into finished bread, not just kneading Play-doh together for two seconds and then you're done. Going from a bowl full of goop to cake is pretty amazing, you must admit. Well, I sort of see each of the albums as the cake being made, and along the way, it becomes more and more cakelike -- more and more complete. The only thing is that Tori's cake won't be finished when she finally gets around to frosting it. There's gonna be gumdrops and whipped cream and sugared rose petals and all sorts of goodies on top, all added with each subsequent album. And I don't see her as changing...I see her as adding another ingredient to the cake that already is. For me, LE was getting the pans out and turning the oven on, UtP was mixing the ingredients up and filling the pans, BfP was putting the pans in the oven and baking, and I feel this album will be the cake just coming out of the oven. Like caterpillar-to-butterfly, what comes out seems very different than what went in, but all the same stuff is still there, tucked inside. It's just chemistry. Magic. I can't wait! The B side, Walking With You, is a much more middle-of-the-road love song. It's quite pleasant, clearly showing promise of what's to come. Financed by her father, _Baltimore_ was pressed on their new 'MEA' (for Myra Ellen Amos) label. You can find this song on at least the following boots: Tori Stories, disc 1 {It's a 4 CD set} Ultra Rarities {a reprinting of the first disc of Tori Stories} Wedding Performance {a re-reprinting of the above} /nad *************************************************************************** * Nadyne Mielke, CS majour, Southern Tech, Marietta, GA * * * * "I regret to say that we of the FBI are powerless to act in cases of * * oral-genital intimacy, unless it has in some way obstructed interstate * * commerce. The best way is to use my ftp site, ftp://ftp.tal.org/pub/toriamos/mp3 because I haven't put any links up on the web page. I'm sorry, don't know if I'm the only one in this particular situation, I'm not a big computer wiz. . every time I try to download an MP3 file, I get this page in my server that just has some weird font, I know it's the file, just in a different format, but it's a little harder to hear that way, you know? ;) So could anyone please help me, tell me how to download the sound? Once again, forgive the neophyte :) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Mar 1998 23:18:05 EST From: SmerfCrazy Subject: tori live in NY finally today in my bootleg store they got a few copies from canada of Tori Amos: Live from NY.........
