Hey guys: I was just thinking, If we do wrtie to Oprah, it needs to be very professional, we all know that... but lets not forget to mention our purpose of RAINN, which not only involves telling oprah that Tori is affiliated with RAINN, but what RAINN does, and what thier current projects are, upcoming events, and even thier WEB SITE so Oprah can have all the background, lets remember that if we are sticking to a POSITIVE topic on Oprah, that it is about the orginazation RAINN, and that is why oprah would have them on her show. To promote RAINN and thier purpose, I was just getting the impression that this was all about tori! Which would be GREAT, but not a really valid reason for her to be a guest on Oprah.... NOW, don't get me wrong.... sugessting her as a musical guest who was had previously performed for RAINN and who could do it again on Oprah and maybe even participate in disscussion! That's also all well and good. But I just wanted to re-iterate the REAL purpose behind tori being on Oprah! Ok, moving on! VH-1 is an awesome idea, and we do have to be careful about going overboard.. but my thinking is... WHY STOP THERE? We all have a need for tori and love to see her perform... free of charge, easily recordable. etc! I'm pumped about her Leno and Letterman apperances and OPRAH AND VH-1 will be great, if and when! But what about all the other TV SHOWS, there are a million talk/interview shows? I think it's pretty simple actually.. the tour's called "Plugged" as an opposition to "MTV Unplugged".. i.e. shows done minimally with acoustic instruments. Tori's last three tours were very minimal, with the exception of Caton on the guitar on the last one, and "Plugged" represents a full reversal of this, with a full band supporting her. Interestingly, I just remembered that at the start of the Boys for Pele era Tori said (or it was reported she said) that she was going to take the Black Dyke Mills brass band along with her. It's a shame that didn't happen, really; I remember her on the Jools Holland show showcasing Mr Zebra and Putting The Damage On with the brass band live, and it was beautiful.. Anyway.. I got my tickets to see Tori at the Newcastle City Hall - five rows from the front, and only slightly to the right! I'm a very happy man! I wish I had the time and money to go and see her at the other shows, but alas I haven't. I figured that I am on mailing lists for bands I only marginally enjoy, so I might as well get on a mailing list for one who I am thoroughly impressed by (I heard the traffic level here was managable, too). Maybe electronic introductions are irritating, so I'll stop now. I deleted the message by accident, but someone had posted words to the effect of interpreting Tori's words was an open-ended discussion, and someone thought that she wouldn't want listeners to narrow it down to any one particular thought or feeling. I just had two thoughts here; both contradicting each other: The one is an anecdote from my youth, when I was trying to make sense out of a Peter Gabriel song and finally asked my brother to give me a one sentence synopsis of what I was supposed to take away from it. He told me, "If he could have said it in a sentence, he would have wrote a sentence, not a song." That inspired me to take what I can out of songs (any art, really). BUT... if something can mean /anything/ to anyone, doesn't it really mean /nothing/? I've been wrestling with that for a while, but it leads me to what I really wanted to talk about, something I find really compelling about Amos' music; how misleading she can be in her tone of voice, in a very (mischeviously) misleading way (not that it always is so). Of hand, the best example I can shoot off is from "Doughnut Song": "Happy for you and I am sure that I hate you" I can't adequately describe my thoughts on this, but its a mechanism I've been trying to borrow [cough cough] in my own music. I'm sure tori does cover songs because in some way emotionally and metally, they affect her. Once before she played "Boys in the Trees" she had said that she wished she wrote it, but yanno.... I mean I can't phathom Tori playing Landslide or Wrapped Around Your Finger because she just felt like it. The emotions of those songs are there for her apparently and she puts her own meaning and feelings into them when she plays. As for songs like Whoomp There it is, and the likesay, i'm sure she does those for fun, changing the different lyrics. Of course im only speculating since i don't know Tori personally, but if you were to cover a song wouldn't you do it on something that effects you emotionally? IMHO, they can be about whatever you decide they are about, even if Tori says in an interview somewhere "oh that's about x, that was inspired by y.". Sometimes I feel that Tori writes the songs, sets them free, and then they are ours for interpretation. I think that even if Tori took my hand and told me what Honey was about, line by line, I still wouldn't be convinced that she hadn't taken a peek into my diary. So if someone thinks Blood Roses is about coming out, and someone thinks Little Earthquakes is about the tragedy in California in the early 1900s, so what? No need to flame them nor really to disagree. Poetry is all about interpretation. Unfortunatley I never got to the end of it. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Mar 1998 22:08:57 EST From: Anavrin560 Subject: Re: my Tori dream :-) :-) :-) In my very first Tori dream I was sitting inside this coffe shop, much like one I go to, I was sitting near a window which is also near the door. I saw her outside, and it looked like she saw me, so I said hi. Then she popped her head into the place and said "What did you say?" and I said "I said hi" and she just smiled and I smiled and then she went back outside. I've had many where she is playing, like a concert and I always get like front row seats and I always end up talking to her. I'm so upset when those end. :-) carol ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Mar 1998 22:15:31 EST From: Adia 509 Subject: Re: The Bootleg Project Announcement I really don't care if the bootleggers get all the money, but I feel I should mention that bootlegs take up only about %1 of the market place and its the greedy CEOs and executives who get most of the money exploiting artists and mucisians. Also, bootleg companies don't pay a whole lot of money for bootlegs, and there are a very few deals that make a whole lotta money, since its usually only the really dedicated fans that buy them. Still, consumer demand is consumer demand and they will supply. The real problem with the music industry is the increasing amount of companies merging, thier demand for instant profit versus longterm success, not a few small renagade companies publishing forbidden material. So its time for us to question who is the bigger threat-pirates or emperors? (I must add that that I'm not reffering to pirating, where they illegally publish an artist's and compnies matierials illegally and sell it. There are many bootleggers out there who are against that.) OH MY GOSH! What a day! Thanks to everyone who recommended Spins. I almost missed them, but then I saw them....a BUNCH of Live CDs and Boots I bought Y Kant Tori Read and Other Rarities and Wild Horses. Both were only $27 OH MY GOSH!! I know Tori is sort of apprehensive about this, and it is supposed to be 80's pop, but I LOVE IT! Big Picture, Cool on Your Island, Fire on the Side, and most of all Etienne, are SO special. These songs are like Tori before adulthood. But Etienee sort of shows what's coming. I love that song so much. The extra B-Sides from LE era were pretty cool also. Is it true Tori didn't really play any of the Piano on YKTR? Also, Wild Horses is AWESOME. From Mark (should that be For Mark?) is such a cool song. The quality is good also. I'm floating off to heaven, see you in May! Hey, it's a > guess, albeit a lame one :) >> > > i'm not quite sure i follow...is the "horses" thing an inside joke or > something? They are talking about when a reference to horses appears on the albums, like on LE in Winter " all the white horses...." on BFP in, well there is the song, Horses, and in Honey there is a off beat reference to cowgirls. Kinda like when "neil" shows up on the albums. And since on the subject....something with Trent/ NIN has showed up on each album, LE "with their NINE INCH NAILS" UTP he sang on Past the Mission, and on BFP in CALS with "made my own pretty hate machine", sooooooo where do you think the trent reference will come up on the chiorgirl album? Okay, on Little Earthquakes, Tori mentions horses in Winter (all the white horses are still in bed), and on Boys For Pele, in the song, (ner) Horses. We were just trying to place the horses in a song on Under the Pink, and also on the new album. My guess for the new album would have to be Northern Lad, because I just see horses in my mind when I think about that title. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Mar 1998 00:55:15 EST From: LostSpireX Subject: Re: Blood Roses... the songs are set free so that we can make our own interpretations.. that's what she says.. ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V3 #83 ************************************
