It bugs me to hear Tori being compared to Kate Bush, Fiona to Alanis, and I especially hate it when people attribute the success of female artists to Alanis. Maybe she just has some > growing up to do :) > Natalie Fiona explains what she meant with her speech at the MTV Video Awards in the latest issue of Rolling Stone. Apparently she didn't mean that she thought life sucked and that she wished she was dead, moreover that she felt like a sellout after winning the award and looking like exactly the type of person that she had despised all her life (aka the popular, rich, well-dressed celebrity). That's where the "this world is bullshit" comment came from - she feels like everyone models themselves after the successful, attractive icons in our society and that we should listen to our own voices instead (something that Tori has also recommended). It's been said many times before, but I'll say it again: Fiona really doesn't communicate herself clearly at all, and what she says is easily misconstrued by the public and the press. But, IMHO, Fiona is very "grown up" and her music shows that. She has been through a lot of hardship and has come out of it a success, and I respect her as a person and as a musician. Andrew P.S. Tori has probably been compared to such artists named because they have influenced her. But Tori has many of her own unique qualities that she has aquired from inside. The whole Jewel/ Fiona thing is probably the same reasoning. If they enjoy Tori or are influenced by her, chances are they will have tori-esque qualitites in their music, regardless of WHO CAME FIRST. She is basically a folkie. Nothing else she has written has the pop sound of the 2 'hits' she was talked into doing. Whenever possible, on a live show, she would do "You were..." w/ just voice and guitar. She may or may not pre-date Tori for making music, but is doesn't matter, Tori is not a folkie and Jewel is. Apples and oranges, they can't be compared. I don't know much 'bout Fiona, except she doesn't trip my trigger. KrW Mairsy dotes an doesy dotes, an liddlelamseydivy. Mikewhy has just sent a summarization of all we know about the new Tori Album. Some are definite, some are just rumors. I have a few further comments, remember, everything I say is full speculation. * Some of the album was written by Tori "in the tropics," whatever that means. Tori was either really in the tropics, or was just having a few too many margaritas.... * Tori is pursuing an "old records" sound using techniques like live takes with drums. Whatever that means...that "old records" things really confuses me.... Pink Tori Floyd Amos? * Jonny Greenwood, the main guitarist of Radiohead, recorded stuff for the new album, but I think none of it made it on the final album. Well, Tori has commented before that she likes Radiohead, I wonder why it never made it to the final album....WAIT!! How do we even know there's a final album yet... * Tori's next album may have a more tribal/latin feel with a lot of drums (at least on part of it.) If it's reminiscent of the drums on CALS or Siren, I'm all for it... if only we could get Tori to do a little Tribal chanting..... * The album is a bit more commercial in that the songs are shorter, not as many 7-10 minute ones. Not as many....well that does mean there are some then ehh....HMMM!!! I want a fully orchestrated one like Yes Anastasia....it is TOri's work though, so I won't be down if their isn't. *Willy Porter says one song on the new album he really liked had "Playboy Mama" as a tentative title and was described as having a "smoky, jazzy guitar groove". Can someone tell me what a SMOKY GUITAR groove is? I think I can dig this.....Tori needs a few flamencos though..... ." However, in Alternative Press magazine she said she wants to bite people's butts with this new record! GOOD!!! My teeth are ready..... * Allstar Daily News said in early 1997 that the new album would be more "electric." Tori commented on this in an interview once, saying, "Whatever that means ... that could mean I've wrapped myself in neon. That means many things." Hmmm...that would make for a cool album cover...Very Bjorkish... * Cooling will most likely not appear on the new album, but may show up as a b-side. I wonder if it will be a Piano solish Cooling like the Miami show, or an upbeat faster song like the little section of it Tori performed in the middle of Yes Anastasia at the last DDI show in Boulder? I hope she includes it somewhere, because I think it's one of the most well written songs TOri has ever made. All in all we have an interesting year at hand. Frankly I'll be happy with Tori's music as long as she's happy with it. This new album is gonna be like a breathe of 100% oxygen..I need something new... Each artist has their own features and qualities, and I could go on and on about stuff like that, but I won't bore you to death. I don't mind comparing artists, but trying to say that one is based on the other, or that one is better than the other because... nah, I just never have found a whole lot of merit in that. Anyways... I know that this is REALLY late, but I just thought I'd share. On the way to Virginia over the Christmas holidays (to see relatives), somewhere on some station in Maryland I heard Tori's version of 'Drummer Boy.' I was way enthused, and my parents even thought it was good, but they thought I was nutso cause I freaked out. :) ==Peace== rAy ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Jan 1998 20:52:14 -0900 (AKST) From: Liz Subject: Re: lots of things They didn't do a song together, Trent submitted a "rock remix" to him for his new single or something like that, as did other rock artists.
