I'm a 17 year old male (yes, my name's Ashley and I'm male. Gotta problem with it?! lol) and i'm from Indiana. I've been on this list for a while now, and I've posted a couple of times. I decided to introduce myself so you'd know who the idiot at rocketmail.com was! Also, I wanted to plug my page. I'm the owner of Tea With the Waitress (http://waitress.home.ml.org) I'm very proud of my page. I just cleaned the place up after Christmas-izing it. I've added a Special Features deal to it. The features this week are: The issue on "Posers" - an editorial by me Flub-Ups - I used this list as my inspiration and of course the RAINN charity Net event. I also have a timeline that tells you almost EVERYTHING that Tori did from 1988-1996. I'm very proud of this feature. I want to share it with everyone here. I have tried and tried to make a news page, but I end up having to 'steal' from Mike Whitehead (Thanks again Mike). If any of you have any Tori news that I could use on my news page, I would appreciate it SOOOOOOOO much! Speaking of MikeWhy, I also have an interview with him on my page. That's another feature. If you have any comments or just plain don't like my page, I really wanna know. I want to make a page that ToriPhiles like, and will frequent. I can't do it without you guys. Richard, thanks for (probably) solving the mystery. I don't know nearly enough about recording techniques to even guess what might be causing the problem, or even what to call the problem. For me it sounds a little like the sound you get when you're dubbing something to tape and you accidentally hit the pause key for a split second, 'bending' the recording on either side of that microscopic blank spot. Just the 's' in step. But I think you're hearing what I'm hearing (which in and of itself is a relief!). The fact that it was done in a single take (no takes? really?) makes the imperfection (I'll go ahead and call it that; no one's saying imperfection is bad) make more sense in terms of it being there. I mean, obviously Tori wouldn't release an imperfect recording without good reason, and the rest of the take is obviously beautiful. It's just that every time I hear it I hear that slight -- whatever it is -- and cringe a little. I wonder if Tori does too? I'm not saying it's driving me to an early grave or anything, just that I can't forget it's there when I hear the song. > And while I'm here, Summertime was written in 1935 by George Gershwin and > DuBose Heyward for the groundbreaking American opera Porgy and Bess. Did Tori grow up with slight a speach impediment? ( and I mean this in the most respectful way!) At the end of "Toodles Mr. Jim" (on CALS single) she describes who Mr. Jim was and you can clearly hear the slurred s's. Then, at 1.28 on HJ on the album you can hear it in "sometimes" ("and sometimes you take a swim") To me it sounds like she had one, but worked hard with a speech therapist, yet it sometimes slips out. What a difficult thing for one with such a beautiful voice! Or it could be a lot of spit has just built up in in mouth... Maybe on TMJ (ooh, that's why I've got braces, I've got TMJ!) she's taking swigs from that water bottle. First off, you spell her name McLachlan. There is a mailing list for her you can join. It's called Fumbling Towards Ecstasy (or FTE for short). However, before joining you should be aware that there is a high bullshit ratio on FTE and even on slow days you can expect between 75 and 100 postings from the list. There is also the list run by Sarah's label, Nettwerk, that sends out only official Sarah and Sarah-related news about once a week. To find out all you'd like to about Sarah from Nettwerk, check out http://www.sarahmclachlan.com. It's a beautiful website!! I also suggest http://www.aquezada.com/sarah/. It's by far the best non-Nettwerk Sarah site out there. You'll find lyrics to *every* Sarah song there, as well as pictures, info about FTE, and all kinds of other stuff. Hope this helps you out. I strongly suggest that you go ahead and fall in love with Sarah ASAP and buy all of her albums. She's an amazing artist and has a voice that will just wrap itself around you. She is, in many ways, comparable to Tori with deep, personal lyrics and undeniable talent. I understand that Tori and Sarah are friends and stay in touch via the occaisional letter, which I think is very cool. Yes, it does. I'm a little surprised you seem not to know the story behind the recording of that song, Beth. It's been reported elsewhere, but I'll take the liberty to attach below Marcel Rijs' posting here about it from over a year ago. It's a great story, and typically Tori. That woman could be inspired by a matchbook cover. > > I'll get even one day, Beth. Say, why don't you tell the people what it was like to be the last person to interview Tori on her post-Concert for RAINN publicity blitz earlier this year, Beth? I know they'd like to hear that. And leave in the FedExed cookie prelude. It shows Tori has some nice people around her. You can even tell folks where online to find the resultant interview if it's still up. :-) :-) :-) And Stephanie--I think Tori just likes to use that goofy voice at the end of Toodles Mr. Jim that you're wondering about, and to play with odd pronunciations of words in general. A lot of the time when she uses odd pronunications within a song it's because she finds it expressive in a musical sense. She likes things to flow. There may have been something specific about Mr. Jim himself or the story she told using that voice which inspired it, but she would go into using a similar voice from the stage to speak as if she were a stuffed animal someone had given her, etc. She's goofy that way. And she was clearly in a free-wheeling mood when she recorded that song. Has anyone managed to translate the tape or at least figure >out what it is generally about? > > Will It's better than that. When Tori performed live in Den Haag in March this year I managed to speak to Marcel van Limbeek, who assisted in the recording of the CD. The story is as follows: during the recording of the CD, "Red baron" was one of those one-take tracks. They were actually testing a new mike, as an other one had broken down. Marcel and Rob were talking about technical stuff through walkie-talkies. (Are they called that where you live?) They were just discussing the sound level and the compression or something like that. Somehow, Tori picked up the talking in her headphones and asked what language they were using. Marcel replied "Dutch", and asked if they should stop talking. Tori motioned to them to go on, however, and Marcel asked if they should talk in English. Tori answers: "No, Dutch", which is what you hear on the recording. The talking does _sound like_ pilots, but that's just what inspired Tori to the lyrics. "Not the Red Baron" was recorded in one take. I hope this clears up the confusion about this particular question!! Well, I'm a far cry from the knowledge of Richard, but here's what I think anyway. It seems like at the end of Toodles Mr. Jim, she's talking the way she did when she'd lost a bunch of baby teeth. That's what I always thought. As for the "s" thing, I think it's just that she and I have the same problem, in that there's a small gap between the front teeth, and there's nothing much to do about it unless it bothers you enough for surgery. Unless you really concentrate, it's hard not to whistle at all, imo...Helen Hunt and David Letterman have the same problem. Sometimes, though, I think, not to be too gross, her saliva just does build up, like in Cloud on My Tongue you can hear that in all the circles. So I don't know if there's a medical problem or anything, that's just my $.02 on the issue. Happy New Year! May it be Tori-filled and...everything it should be. Oh and btw, do they play Siren on that Great Expectations ad? My sister was talking so I could only hear what sounded like a harpsichord. But anyway, take care! Maybe try it out for a while . it is > always easy to unsub. I would just like to comment on the "pointless crap." I have been a member of the FTE list for over six months now. While it is true that the list generates a high volume of mail every day, it is not only pointless crap. I have found the list to be a place full of compassionate friendly people and the postings are not limited to only "fumbleorgies." Sure, there are posts that are silly and lighthearted such as the fumbleorgies, but why be serious all the time among friends? If the list had consisted of entirely Sarah-related contents such as this, it would get boring very quickly. Not that Sarah is boring, but you can only analyze songs and post dreams about Sarah so often. If you notice, things like this occur a lot on this list. (Just substitute the word "Tori" for "Sarah". Remember the Professional Widow thread?) Also, the "pointless crap" is labeled in the subjects of each post, and not all of it is pointless. There are movie reviews and book reviews. People sell cd's to others on the list and have in depth discussions on many "deep" topics, not just orgies. Also, about labeling posts about meeting up at concerts and such, I do not think this is pointless crap at all. Wouldn't you rather go to a Tori concert and sit among friends and fellow Tori fans? How could this be accomplished if it weren't for postings to the list? While, I agree that joining the list is not recommendable to someone who doesn't have time to read 50 - 100 messages per day, it is not just a place of pointless crap. I have learned a lot about Sarah from the list, more than I have about Tori from this one. I didn't mean this as a flame, and I do like the Tori info on this list, but I just couldn't sit here and have someone judge something else in such a harsh light, especially since that something else contains many good friends of mine. I think Sarah fans are one of a kind. Most Sarah fans that I know, not only the people on the list, are generous, kind-hearted and trustworth people who care about others and coincidentally like the music of Sarah McLachlan. I'm glad such a list exists because there need to be people like Sarah fans in this world.
