Actually, I've been meaning to ask this for a long time but kept forgetting. This is a very very minute miniscule little thing that has *always* bugged me on Pele.... During "Not the Red Baron," Tori sings the line "with every step." Now, when she says the word 'step' does it sound, to anyone else, like there was a little glitch or something that warped the 's' sound? It does that on my copy. At first I thought it was just on the dub I made, the tape copy, but it's on my CD as well. (I dubbed it from someone else's CD so it's not just my disc). Anyway. have you noticed that? Does anyone know what it is? Richard? Richard? :) Beth - -- "And I try to laugh at whatever life brings Cuz when I look down I miss all the good stuff And when I look up I just trip over things." US "limited" edition single with coloured close up of tori on white horse (allthough it says "limited" it isn't at all) (winter/the pool/take to te sky/sweet dreams/upside down) 2. UK single with coloured cover of tori on white horse (winter/the pool/take to the sky/sweet dreams) 3. UK limited edition with black/white cover (winter/angie/smells like teen spirit/thank you) I hope that helps! I hear no pitch bending whatsoever, so I will assume you don't have some bizarro defective CD and that you meant warped in some other way. What I *do* hear (after twenty-some playbacks with in-the-ear headphones-- thanks Beth) is Tori eating the microphone in her typical manner. I think she likes the increased feeling of intimacy and to invoke the proximity effect by doing that, but she always has a tendency to cause lots of "P popping" which made me crazy during her live shows: My main problem with Mark's otherwise brilliant house sound. The TV guys seemed to eliminate that problem in the Concert for RAINN by using different microphones. But I digress. So, it may be some microphone effect pertaining to the sibilance of the "s" and the "t" in "step" which was exacerbated by her eating the microphone, but what I suspect is that it's simply feedback because her cans (headphones) are loud enough to have caused that. Sibilance in the human voice and transients caused by piano are the most extreme increases in volume above average level that one is forced to deal with in the studio when recording acoustic instruments. It can be like 14 decibels. The increased volume of the "s" and the "t" in "step" could have been enough of a difference to have caused some brief feedback where, overall, there otherwise was none. You will recall that Baron was one of her infamous no-take wonders[TM], and since she extemporized that song to accompany her Dutch pilots, there was no opportunity to go back and redo the vocal part, so they were stuck with it. Really--to me it does sound more like the ring of feedback than anything else. If that wasn't the "warped" sound you meant then I don't know what to tell you. If anyone wants a translation of this post you'll have to wait until I've more fully recovered from the flu, and maybe even slept some. Otherwise, pick up a book on studio recording techniques. John Woram wrote a good one. And while I'm here, Summertime was written in 1935 by George Gershwin and DuBose Heyward for the groundbreaking American opera Porgy and Bess. I'm plotting, Beth. I am your worst nightmare. You can run, but you can't hide. Your ass is mine. :-) Be seeing you, Richard Handal, H.G. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Dec 1997 09:57:52 -0500 (EST) From: Nadyne Mielke Subject: BfP remastering On Tue, 30 Dec 1997, Dennis Snelders wrote: > Hi, about the 'remastering of BfP': > so 800,000 copies were made of the original version and all others will > have the tornado mix, but does anyone how many copies were made (or will > be made) of the version of BfP with the armand's star trunk funkin' mix > of 'professional widow' and without 'in the springrime of his voodoo'? > or is that version just a limited edition? I'm not sure if the 800,000 refers to the total number of BfP's with the original Talula, or just the number produced by Atlantic. I had been under the impression that it was just the Atlantic number. The version of BfP with the remix of PW and without ItSoHV is an EastWest thing only, it wasn't produced in the states. Gold (100,000) and platinum (1,000,000) certification is given for number of albums sold {not just produced}, correct? If it's just for number produced, I'll go and press a million copies of something so I can have a platinum album too. ;) I'm not sure if it's that there are 800,000 CDs with the original Talula, or if it's 800,000 albums {which would include CD, tape, vinyl, minidisc, and any other format I'm not thinking of}. However, a Gold album in the United States has to sell 500,000 copies, not 100,000. The numbers for gold and platinum are lower in other countries with smaller populations. There's books of sheet music out for each of the albums, plus a book of b-sides and MTV Unplugged. The MTV Unplugged book has sheet music for "Over the Rainbow", but it doesn't really appear to be the Tori-ized version. The books all cost in the $20 range, and include other pictures and stuff.
