Tori's is one the ten artists on the first video (Crucify) . This is what they write about her... "Juxtaposing images of Charles Manson and ice cream, purring winsomely about crucifixion and violation. Through Tori Amos the ramblings of a soul are exposed. Her poetry persists, naked in its frank attempts to reconcile, or at least reconize, the disparities that surround her. Her music is unnerving, discomforting, yet absolutely compelling." And there's a little picture of Tori smiling next to that. Anyway, Tori seems out of place with the other ten bands on this tape (Pantera, Sonic Youth, Body Count...) since they're mostly Hard Rock/Heavy Metal bands. Well, *I* happen to be a woman, and I have been raped twice (once by a stanger and once by my closest male friend) and been the victim of two attempted rapes besides, and I can say without hesitation that Tori has not betrayed *my* trust. I'm grateful that her words have made a horrible nightmare just a little easier to get past for so many thousands of people - -- both female *and* male. "Betrayal" is the last word that comes to mind when thinking about a person who has made such a positive difference. There were a couple of people on this list who seemed to think that simply asking the question,"Was it REALLY a rape?" was an automatic signal that they MUST be a domineering arrogant male stereotype ready to believe that the woman is the true criminal and simply lying about her experiences. I have been reading EVERY SINGLE POST concerning this issue and NOT ONCE did I think that someone was implying those things...maybe a couple of them worded the question badly at worst...from where I was sitting all I saw were some people that were a little surprised to hear that perhaps it wasn't a literal "physical penetration or assault"...when I first heard this, I wanted it confirmed too...THIS DOES NOT IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM MAKE ME UNDERMINE WHAT SHE WENT THROUGH! Who cares if it wasn't what is considered in the criminal system as a "real rape"! I strongly suspect that most of us here have the capacity to understand that, and YET there just HAD to be someone in the group who would completely misconstrue a COMPLETELY VALID AND INNOCENT QUESTION into an excuse to condescend, CRUCIFY and insult several members of the group, including myself, and I'm a woman for Christ's sake! How do you think that made US feel when you said that we were disgusting you, when all we really wanted to know were the facts! The facts, apparently being, that she was not in fact PHYSICALLY raped, but a victim of what has been defined by law "assault"...but as I've said in this post and I think several others pointed out even before the mud slinging started, the bottom line is that that technicality is not what matters as much as how it affected her and her life and how she's turned it around to help others in their times of turmoil. I think that most of us here are quite capable of respecting and understanding that, and I'm sorry if some people obviously don't have enough faith in the people on this list to know that their intentions are generally not deviant! It really pisses me off and saddens me to see this kind of paranoid militancy on this issue...there are just some people in this world I guess that just have to constantly bat away at knats and flies, even when they're not there. Don't get me wrong...I do believe that those sexist attitudes exist in some places, but I honestly can't say I've seen them here. Just one word of advice to you militant feminists or militant whatevers out there, just try to LOOK at the person, and I mean REALLY LOOK at the person or persons you've chosen to crucify, BEFORE you cast the first stone.... I wouldn't say that this is entirely true. There's a comment (SOmwehere I can't be bothered finding it) That the 2 borrow heavily from each other. Delirium first apeared in Sandman (issue 20, 1990) before Neil met Tori (I think). But as the character grew and devellopped, especially in the Breif Lives story arc, there appears to have been a lot of cross-polination between the 2 individuals.
