Hullo :) I'm new on this list and am very very very excited to be on. I'm a pretty big Tori fan, I saw her only twice on DDI I got to meet her at a soundcheck, that was really spooky. It was so amazing.. that's a whole other email thou.. I own 17 cds of hers and over a dozen bootleg tapes and about 6 hours worth of her on video. I also have some vinyl and tour stuff. wa la.. yadda yadda yadda... I'm 16, a junior in PA, and a swimmer. I really didn't mean to offend anyone. mostly I found the heavy metal thing funny. But I just did find the whole thing funny because it just shows several common misconceptions about Tori. I never heard of her actually being an "activist" for lesbians or anything else. But I *have* heard people call her a "lesbian man-hating bitch" which we all know is a bit off-base. I have several gay and bi friends, I myself have had same-gender experiences, and I have absolutely nothing against homosexuals. I'm very sorry if anyone took it that way. :( I certainly didn't mean it. I've just been down and then I read this, and it made me laugh, it seriously did, not because of anything but because it's just another example of the misconceptions about Tori that are circulating among people. Again, I'm awfully sorry if I offended anyone. It was certainly not my intention. Hoping all is forgiven, Yvette. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Definitions are limiting. Limitations are deadening. To limit oneself is a kind of suicide. We-ellllll....there are two things Tori has said that have made me wonder if her door swings both ways. Around the time of the UtP tour, Tori talked a great deal about having a crush on k.d. lang. There's also that song "The Pool": "One with her hands open No one will know it, she says, Just you and me. And when it's over, I'll go back." As far as the gay parties go, I always thought they were Atlantic's form of damage control. Tori's music is always open to interpretation, and some people may have taken lyrics from "hey Jupiter" and "Blood Roses" out of context and considered them homophobic. I thought this was Tori's and Atlantic's way of saying "we like gay people, really!" - --Chelsea (who thinks too fast for her Nobita) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 07 Nov 1997 13:47:52 PST From: "Josh Kostka" Subject: Re: Tori in comic catalog.. i'm sorry....i'm not a lesbian, but my >first reaction at this post was that i took offense. please someone >explain what they meant.... Sorry, no offense intended. What was funny wasn't that they wrote that Tori was a Lesbian activist but more that if you're going to write one line about Tori, I don't think that's how I would describe her, because that's not the main thing she does and she really hasn't been a heavy metal singer since the eighties.... Whitehead" Subject: RE: Tori's assumed sexuality Just wanted to put my 2 cents worth in on the sexuality question that seems to pop up frequently on these lists ;) I would agree that the term lesbian activist is not an accurate description of Tori. She certainly supports the rights of gays and lesbians, but she is not out there on the front lines fighting discrimination and lobbying for laws or picketing or all the other activities that one traditionally associates with an activist. Like any *intelligent* human being however, she acknowledges the rights and beauty of a homosexual relationship, as well as a straight relationship. Remember it was the gay men in the clubs she played as a teen that taught her things like tenderness (Prime Time Live interview from last year.) And her music certainly inspires many people, including lesbians and gay men. There was one review on my site from a young gay man who met Tori on tour and told her that her music helped him accept himself and "come out." So in that sense, Tori has a positive effect on the gay community. Here is a segment of an article called "The Hurt Inside" that appeared in Hot Press Magazine in Feb 23, 1994 in which Tori answers the question of her sexuality. Of course, this only says how Tori felt 3 years ago, but I have read nothing since that would lead me to think that this no longer applies. Enjoy! - ------------ Has Tori ever considered having a lesbian relationship? "I have a dear friend who's not diesel but she's definitely dike and I feel like we are very good friends and I know her girlfriend and everything". "And she said to me recently 'the dikes know that you love to suck cock but that you also see the beauty in women and can sit and talk with us about the idea of giving head to another woman and caring about that. And she said 'the best thing is that there is no judgment with you". And there isn't. But I have never given head to a woman and I don't really feel the need to. I like to feel myself feeling myself, which I sing about in Icicle, but I don't have to have whatever chemistry is needed to be attracted to women that way. "Having said that, when k.d. Lang looked at me over her glasses one time I almost crawled into her arms. But I did wonder if I was a bit of a sex object for her. though wanting to crawl into her arms in the same as wanting to give her head, is it?! But I do imagine myself being a man a lot. I said to my friend who's a dike, 'if I had a cock I'd rub you from head to toe' and she looks at me and says 'let's pretend!' But at least she didn't say 'I've a spare one here'". - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Michael L.
