Well, here are some facts from someone who knows something about music, etc: Tori and Fiona are both woman and both play the piano and sing, write and play their own songs. But other than that they are way different. Fiona plays Pop and sings Jazz/Blues. Tori plays mostly Classical (she also have some songs in other styles, but not many) and sings Rock. So they are in different departments. About Fiona's weight, this is probably something that she was born with. Singers who sings stuff like she does needs to gain weight in order to perform, so even if she doesn't get any fatter, she must eat to get muscles that would support her voice. Tori plays mostly Classical (she also have > some songs in other styles, but not many) and sings Rock. So they are in > different departments. If, as you claim, you 'know something about music', and are fans of both these artists, you would know that you can't simply catergorise either of them. When you go into your local record store you may find both artists under the Pop/Rock section, but I'm sure that Tori in particular would not say that she sings Rock (except perhaps YKTR stuff) and I'm sure her fans don't think of her as a 'rock' or 'classical' artist (I know I don't). Everyone is entitled to their own opinion on this subject of definition, but that is all it is - an opinion, NOT a fact. For me personally, I don't know how I'd define Tori's music, but I'd say that it's definately not Pop. I really like this little Tori quote about her style of music: 'I'll tell you something that I'm very aware of: my work doesn't relate to the masses. My work is really for the elite. And when I say elite, I mean the mental elite.' So I like to think of Tori's music as something that crosses musical boundaries - instead, appealing to a minority of open-minded music lovers - the 'mental elite' :) Nina - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 'I wish that they'd swoop down in a country lane, late at night when I'm driving. After searching every unpacked box and crate for about two hours this morning, I finally found the magazine with the interview in it. It's the October 1994 issue (#73) of "The Face". It has a picture of Madonna on the cover biting her little finger and the quote "I'm being punished, but I'm not sorry". The feature about Tori starts on page 120 and it features four pictures of her, all of which I think are available on the 'net: 1. Wearing a red sleeveless top, standing against a blue brick wall with her arms raised and her fingers laced together against her forehead. 2. Wearing a long silver dress and boots, standing in a car park with a "Parking $4.00" sign in the background. 3. Lying on a mainly red, patterned carpet, arms reached out, staring into the distance, with a wrist support on her left wrist. 4. The famous one of her stood against the post with the "push button for walk signal" sign, and the arrow pointing at her groin. There - if that doesn't help you track this particular issue down, I don't know what will! :) Now, the particular quote goes as follows: - -- BEGIN -- The crew are more interested in confirming that Tori's press officer from her English record label has brought over the requested supplies from London: PG Tips teabags, English newspapers, and a supply of Nicorette patches (they're a prescription-only deal in the States). - -- END -- I've read through the whole thing and there's no direct quote from Tori about quitting smoking, so I must have just invented that by inference. In fact, as far as what's there in black and white, it isn't 100% clear that the patches are actually for Tori, although I think it's a fair assumption that they are. Hope that helps. :) Andy. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Oct 1997 12:54:24 +0200 From: "Lance Windom" Subject: Fiona vs Tori revisited When I write something I usually mean it. That is to say when I write something like "I know about Chimps" it doesn't mean that other people doesn't know anything about it. It's just that I do and I've got something to contribute to the general knowledge of people who didn't. It's also concievable that everybody on the list knows the things I stated, but the chances are slim. Okay, now for the difference between opinion and fact. Every thing in this world might be stated as an opinion. Even scientific theories are always under scrutiny, and sometimes are proved wrong when other scientific discvories prove them wrong. For me, what I know for sure to be well rounded opinion with high chances of accuracy is a fact. Now, I know that Record stores are always having problems in cataloging albums, but that's because they have to put as much CDs into every rack. That's why sometimes Jazz albums find themselves sitting together with Spanish Guitar albums and Transcedental albums, but it is a very poor thing to base musical opinions on. Tori Amos sings rock, even when the song is not rockish. She applies rock singing to other musical forms, and it works well. The other influence that I can discern on her singing is black gospel hymns. These are (almost) facts, but since as I said before facts can and have been pushed aside many times, and you might argue with what I wrote, but I wish you'd do it in a civil way, even if you consider yourself to be in the "Mental elite", and like Radiohead which are a very good band (and that's my honest opinion). The things I've said are based on my knowledge of music after years of playing lots of different styles and listening to a whole bunch of music. I try to be as accurate as I can. Ok, now it's your turn to spam me. It's okay, really. That's right. Such things happen all the time. Everyone does it to one degree or another. One must be ever vigilant to avoid it when it might be leading one astray. It's a human thing. That's how we are. One must make *some* assumptions all the time to get through the day. We have to assume the brakes will work when we drive or we'd be too afraid to ever drive anywhere. We must assume the stove will burn us if we touch it when it's on. Some assumptions are necessary. Some lead us down the proverbial garden path. > In fact, as far as what's there in black and white, it isn't 100% clear > that the patches are actually for Tori, although I think it's a fair > assumption that they are. And *why*, Andy, do you think it's a fair assumption that they were for Tori to use herself? In light of no one having posted that they ever recall hearing anything about Tori smoking tobacco in any form (and I know *I* don't recall ever hearing such a thing--and I've gone to great lengths to read everything I can get my hands on about her for the past 4 1/2 years; plus, I've searched nearly the entire archives of RDT from May 6, 1992 to recent days since this came up 30-some hours ago and found nothing about Tori ever smoking tobacco), I think it's much more likely that those Nicorette patches were for a friend of hers. But that's speculation. The fact remains, as you said--there is no quote there from Tori about quitting smoking, nor about her having ever smoked tobacco of any form in her life. > Hope that helps. :) It did, yes. Thanks again for digging that out. Now, as for the other part of the posting you made, Andy, in response to a posting by rain. Rain said-- > > Date: Sun, 19 Oct 1997 02:15:52 -0700 > > From: rain > > Subject: tori and drugs:? > > hi i was just watching this tori video bootleg and she mentioned being > > in amsterdam and (i think) smoking pot there, and i know she talked > > about tripping off halucinogenic plant roots in new mexico > > before/during the making of under the pink and maybe pele too...and > > shes talked aboutsmoking pot when she was 12...i was wondering if > > anyone knew for sure iftori does drugs and what drugs she does or if > > she condones/condemns drug use? And then Andy said-- > I think I might have heard the thing you're talking about. I've got a > tape of a concert from during the Little Earthquakes tour and she tells > a joke about when she and a friend were arrested for possession of > cannabis. Was that the one you heard, or was your's more recent? <>====<> <>====<> <>====<> <>====<> <>====<> Through earlier private exchanges with rain, I happen to know the story she was referring to was the one Tori told at the concert in Albany, New York, on November 8, 1992. (It's the infamous "Phil Collins" story which used to be available in MPEG3 form on Danica and Matt's Tori Amos Archive web site.) The story Tori told was not one of her being arrested for anything. She and her friend were *detained* on suspicion by customs officials. Big difference. Andy, if you have any other story on tape that Tori ever told about her having been arrested for anything, bring it on. I greatly appreciate all the efforts you've gone through when you've posted here, Andy, toward clarity of who you were quoting, the magazine you cited, etc. It makes untangling such things much easier. And again, as to rain's original question about whether Tori does drugs, as Michael Whitehead already mentioned in this discussion, he keeps a handy link on the topic on his web site at-- http://www.aye.net/~mikewhy/drugs.html. It doesn't have every reference to her drug taking I've ever seen before, but it's more than enough to give a sense of her views about it. And BTW, in that story rain was asking about, Tori did not say she had smoked pot in Amsterdam. She was her typically oblique self. What she said was more along the lines of that she and her friend had done "what all good girls would do in Amsterdam." Tori so often leaves a lot to be interpreted by the listener, even when she speaks. That's one reason we end up going around in these kinds of circles so often. :-) Oh--and before I forget; Caton is Steve Caton, who's played guitar with Tori since the Y Kant Tori Read days, has performed on all her solo records, and toured with her last year all over the world. He would sometimes light up a cigarette onstage during the tour last year, which was Michael's reference when he said-- > In fact, there are a few stories about Tori being bothered by cigarette > smoke and asking people not to (obviously does not apply to Caton though > ;) Be seeing you, Richard Handal, H.G. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Oct 1997 08:38:06 -0700 (PDT) From: Richard Holmes Subject: Re: Tori and smoking and some other stuff... Who really cares? Agreement here, but I think we'd be concerned if she started getting too skinny; she channels a lot of energy when she's up there, and her life is surrounded by a whirling vortex of intense events and emotions; it is very easy for people in her situation to neglect their health; from what I've heard / seen, though, she's taking care of herself... > Bright Blessings and Lollipops! Anyway, the title of the article is 'Road Warrior': Soulful recording star Tori Amos may love to perform, "but that isn't going to get you through 250 cities," she admits. "On mile 7 of a marathon, knowing you have 19 more to go, reality sets in." To get ready for her 1996 world tour, the 31-year-old singer worked for six months with a personal trainer in the high-and-dry plateaus of New Mexico. "We figured if I could increase my stamina at 7,000 feet, wherever I went from there would be easier," she says. Her typical workout day: four circuits of lower-body strengethening, each seperated by 20 minutes of aerobics. There were 2 small pictures with the article, in one she's wearing a leotard and looks like she's just been working out, and the caption says 'Tori Amos: road ready'. I agree that maybe she was comfort eating after Eric, and gained some weight, which is why she embarked on a major fitness spree before the BfP tour :) Nina *************************************************************************** "Most people would rather be sheep with company than to stand out with antlers on." - -Tori Amos **************************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Oct 1997 13:56:45 -0400 (EDT) From: WeirdyBoi@aol.com Subject: Re: Tori Smoking In a message dated 97-10-21 13:29:43 EDT, jenn@se.mediaone.net writes: << . No. It isn't the song she wrote for that boy when she was little. (darn it) But, since you brought up that subject I wanted to tell you all that I once wrote a story in English about that. I had to write about taking a trip on a time machine, and about what I saw and where I was. Well... I wrote that I went back to about 1971 to a scholl in Maryland. At the school, there was a talent show and there was a little girl on the stage playing the piano. After the talent show I went up to her and asked her who the song was for. She told me that it was for a boy she liked. She was a very cute little girl named Myra Ellen, but she didn't wear dresses like the rest of the little girls, she wore clothes that the older kids were wearing (like bell-bottoms, and things like that). Well... that's who it goes. I just needed to share. See ya :) Don't loose your cracker jacks, Staci ()()()()()(Flashdance)()()()()()() "You go out there and the music starts and you begin to feel it.
