I guess it's because Delaware isn't >exactly 'the place' for good music :( frankly, i don't think there are any "places" predisposed towards "good" music on the (commercial) american radio dial. in heavily populated areas, stations have to have mass appeal to survive (i.e., lowest common denominator) while in sparser areas, there is too small an audience for anything but the mainstream. for instance, one might think that the new york city radio spectrum would have a fantastic melange of stations, but it's all dreck. on the other side of the coin, my old stomping grounds of upstate new york has a limited choice of formats: light hits, classic rawk, country/western and the token public radio station. college radio is pretty much a bust these days -- if a college station hasn't become a puppet of the school, it's most certainly a puppet of the major labels. public radio isn't much better these days either, though for different reasons: they are often disguised slaves to corporations and so on, trying not to offend so they can maintain the cash flow from beneficiaries. the only "good" stations i've come across are listener-supported community stations. oddly, they seem to have no rhyme or reason as to where they pop up. my favorite three are wfmu in east orange, new jersey (a lovely, burned out shell of a town), wpkn in bridgeport, connecticut (even more of a wasteland than east orange) and wnti in hackettstown out in the western new jersey hinterlands. 'course, your definition of "good" will vary. woj, ranting and raving late at night (should stop that, huh?) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Aug 1997 10:08:21 -0500 (CDT) From: Jennifer Gerbi Subject: Re: Birth of 'Voodoo' and the story behind Caton's cigarette On Tue, 5 Aug 1997, Eric with a 'c' wrote: > Voodoo might have been chosen deliberately, because March 20 is the > first > day of spring... cool It really, really pains me that voodoo was left off the reissue of BFP with the remix of prof. widown. Every single show I saw, an earlier and later chicago, Normal, and rainn on TV, he was smoking, as well as most of the video boots I have. > I am just guessing - but so are most of you speculating whether Tori > minds that > he was smoking... I think most of us saw him do it most of the time. I am surprised to hear of a show where he was not. Good point, someone had about the fan behind tori- I never noticed it, I'm sure that helps tremendously, especially since not all of the audience members were exactly non-smokers themselves. I have to say, one of the reasons this whole smoking bullshit upsets me so much is that I"m one of those people that actually gets quite ill- not just annoyed- by it. I sing and play bass, and I"ve always wanted a musical career, but i can't be in the areas in which one needs to be to play live when you are not famous. I have really bad athsma which is a challange to work with to sing alone, but when I get even a tiiny bit of smoke I just flare up bigtime. So, everyone's little habit makes it impossible for me to like enjoy a bar, or a smaller concert, or a party, or singing, and I hate it. So its' not that I am saying that a smoker is a loser or is gross or antyhing- we all do things that are bad for us. what I do hate is that it is something that affects others in a direct way, and it prevents me from leading the kind of life I would like to lead. allrightythen. -j ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Aug 1997 10:15:05 -0500 (CDT) From: Jennifer Gerbi Subject: Re: Fiona: anorexic or really drugged out On Wed, 6 Aug 1997 Caer@aol.com wrote: > on the subject of fiona's weight, i don't know if any of you know this but > fiona is a vegan. that means she eats noo meat or animal products.sooo she > really doesn't eat alot of fat in her diet that she would be getting from > meat or from dairy, hope that helps.she is really skinny but most vegans are > :) no--hoo-hoo they aren't. Believe ME. I have many vegan friends, and was myself for a time, and was vegitarian for 3 years with no cheese, and I personally blow that theory out of the water. Some of us are naturally big, some of us naturally small. However, with fiona and some other people, it is easy to tell that they are too thin for their frames- when you see the hollows beneath a shoulderblade or hip, those aren't really common in just small-framed thin people. I think she is 19, I think she is trying really hard to be cool, and who didn't when they were 19 and a "big star" and having everyone tell you you are great...I don't think she is on drugs, because she does have a lot of energy playing live and has played a lot of consistent shows. Hopefully, she will let herself fill out a little, in time, as her voice and performance fill out a little as well. She has a lot of time to become the kind of artist she wants to be, it will be intersting to see what that is. -j > > kelly > Caer@aol.com > ********************************************** *Jennifer E. Anyway, through either cd now or newbury comics/records online or etc., you can still get the singles for like 6 bucks each, and it is no excuse to get a counterfeit. Also, all of the record stores can ORDER them for just as cheap, (go to an actual record store, not like best buy, although they tend to have some singles in stock, especially the winter single). if the don't have them in stock, and for the 25-30 bucks that counterfeit woudl cost you, you can like get a whole bunch of singles. I would suggest hey jupiter, caught a lite sneeze, talula, cornflake girl, winter, and god, if you don't have any. -j ********************************************** *Jennifer E. BTW, i saw her on Unpluged & i thought she was rather terrible, she didnt even play except on one song. her music is a lot simpler than tori, they are very different. i remember when someone first told me to try Tidal beacause he said she was like "a bluesy Tori Amos", i did & well... it she isn't. she is not in the same class as artists like Tori & Ani Difranco. and i do not believe that that is so because of her youth... but she is still ok. sorry for rambling. ~marissa At 10:15 AM 8/7/97 -0500, you wrote: >On Wed, 6 Aug 1997 Caer@aol.com wrote: > >> on the subject of fiona's weight, i don't know if any of you know this but >> fiona is a vegan. that means she eats noo meat or animal products.sooo she >> really doesn't eat alot of fat in her diet that she would be getting from >> meat or from dairy, hope that helps.she is really skinny but most vegans are >> :) > >no--hoo-hoo they aren't. To me, if the re-pressing of BfP was going to be changed, the perfect thing to do would be: 1. leave the original Professional Widow there 2. change Hey Jupiter to the dakota version 3. change Talula to the tornado version 4. change Putting the Damage On to the twilight mix 5. don't drop any songs ...now that I think would be a good BfP (perhaps even better than the original) and I would certainly go out and buy it.
