Tori herself has said that the "Boys For Pele" era is over and that she's gonna take a break. I will keep this mailing list going and will definitely use it if there is any hot news but don't be surprised if it doesn't come as often as it used to. ON SALE AT TOWER RECORDS: I was just at Tower Records and noticed that the book "Tori Amos/ A Collector's Guide" by Paul Campbell is on sale at 30% off! This book is packed with photos of collectible Tori items such as CDs, vinyl, posters, "Teen Spirit" deodorant (no kidding), bootlegs, etc. Its missing a number of items but is a very commendable attempt at a catalog and a lot of fun to look through. (Though its also somewhat depressing for those of us who attempt to collect everything. :) You can also order from Tower Records by calling 1-800-ASK-TOWER. LILITH FAIR: Well, it appears that Tori will not be joining Sarah McLachlan's "Lilith Fair" this summer. A few months ago Tori was mentioned as a possible artist but it doesn't look like that's gonna happen. The "Lilith Fair" is a festival of female musicians that will be touring the country. In addition to Sarah McLachlan, other confirmed artists are: Fiona Apple, Paula Cole, Jewel, The Indigo Girls, The Cardigans, Lisa Loeb, Aimee Mann, Neneh Cherry, Shawn Colvin, Victoria Williams, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Suzanne Vega. (Yeah, wow!!!) All these artists will be NOT be playing in one show. Rather, the lineup will change as the tour progresses from city to city. Dates have not been finalized yet but here are a few. This list is NOT complete. 7/04/97 Vancouver, BC 7/05/97 Seattle, WA 7/06/97 Portland, OR 7/08/97 San Francisco, CA 7/09/97 Los Angeles, CA 7/10/97 Phoenix, AR 7/29/97 Nissan Pavillion, Washington, DC 7/30/97 unconfirmed- Raliegh, NC OR Charlotte, NC 7/31/97 Starwood Amphitheater, Nashville, TN 8/01/97 Lakewood Amphitheater, Atlanta, GA 8/03/97 Woodlands, Houston, TX 8/04/97 Starplex, Dallas, TX 8/05/97 Mud Island, Memphis, TN 8/07/97 Riverbend Amphitheater, Cincinnatti, OH 8/08/97 Deer Creek Amphitheater, Indianapolis, IN 8/09/97 World Theater, Chicago, IL 8/11/97 Polaris Amphitheater, Columbus, OH 8/12/97 Star Lake Amphitheater, Pittsburg, PA 8/13/97 Scranton, PA 8/15/97 Toronto, Ontario 8/16/97 Toronto, Ontario 8/17/97 Ottowa, Ontario 8/18/97 Montreal, Quebec I got these from the Jewel mailing list (she will be playing the above dates). See "http://www.lilithfair.com" for more details. That's really all I know so please don't mail me asking when tickets go on sale. :) FOLLOW UP ON OLD NEWS: I might as well take this time to follow up on a few old news items. RAINN CONCERT CD When Calvin Klein announced the "Unlock The Silence" RAINN benefit T-shirts it was reported that each shirt would come with a CD from the January 23, 1997 RAINN benefit concert. I think this was a misunderstanding or hopeful wishing on part of Tori fans. Several months ago Calvin Klein sent out a brochure detailing the "Unlock The Silence" campaign. It said that each T-shirt would come with "A special CD featuring 'Me And A Gun' and a remix of 'Putting The Damage On'." Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to have happened either. I have not heard any further mention of this CD. I've also not heard of anybody actually finding the T-shirts in CK stores yet. So far the these shirts only seem to be available at Tower Records. You can also order one from the RAINN web site (http://www.rainn.org) but I've not heard of anybody receiving their order yet. SUNGLASSES HUT During March all "Sunglasses Hut" stores held a promotion in which the purchase of CK sunglasses would also get a special Tori CD. Some Tori fans were confused about this CD, it is NOT the RAINN concert CD and it does NOT have the new "Putting The Damage On (The Twilight Mix)". The CD from "Sunglasses Hut" just had two tracks of "Me And A Gun": the album version and a live version. Now that its April that promotion is over and some "Sunglasses Hut" stores may be willing to give away any extra Tori CDs. I've heard of some Tori fans being successful; go ask *nicely*. -Greg ("he writes letters...") ___________________ |\ | | _/ .`-| Greg Burrell | , http://www.webville.com/~tori \ .4 | ---------- |\__// `--'\| gregb@netcom.com |`--' C|__________________| ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Apr 1997 12:06:10 -0400 (EDT) From: Little Earthquake Subject: promo CD's To all who replied... That's exactly what I think. If somebody had asked me what style of music Tori's is *before* the release of BfP, I'd have had difficulties saying that it was pop- meanwhile I think it's pretty right, and I don't thing that's a change for the better. Of course the more "modern" songs show how many, many musical possibilities Tori has to express her message and I wouldn't call them bad (I do like the groovy ones like LA & ITSOHV), but they've lost something touching the earlier songs had. Remember listening to Yes, Anastasia and feeling this incredible relief when you finally heard her scream this high-pitched "WEEEELLL SEEEE-EEE-EEE".. I don't find many moments like that on BfP - if there are songs that really reached me on BfP, then it's those ones like M,mF or Doughnut Song, this classical "Girl with piano" stuff.. I must admit I'm a little scared when I hear her say that she feels like she's gonna quit the "Girl with piano"-phase... As for "selling out": You all remember the discussion about the new fans at Tori concerts that were screaming all the time? I think a changing audience has a lot to do with the changing music, and if fan behaviour is #partially# getting a little closer to normality, it might be a proof for #parts# of the music becoming a little normal, too.. Well, after those maybe a little hard (I've been wanting to tell this someboody for quite a while.. :) ) and hopefuly provoking words finally two questions: - - Why are there no lyrics for "ITSOHV" in the booklet, or is this special for the European version? - - Who is Allen Ginsberg some people were refering- gotta have something with Tori..? Bye, Nic ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Apr 1997 17:37:25 -0400 (EDT) From: Delirium Subject: Who is Allen Ginsberg?! I honestly don't know if he is related to Tori in any way, or if Tori was even an admirer of his work, but she should be. long Before I moved to Florida Allen owned a farm near my grandparents' home in the catskills. My grandmother called him a dirty old man, and in some ways he was that... but he was also a very wonderful person. he was one of the first homosexuals to "come out," although his eccentricity and beat poet status made this easier to do, i'm sure. He was elected 'king of May' by students in Prague, forcing the then Czech communist government to arrest him and destroy his "documents", which were, of course, only drafts of his poetry. He worked with Timothy Leary to spread the mind altering benefits of mushrooms and LSD, he went to India with spiritual master baba Ram Dass and became "enlightened." In fact- of the people who we have lost over the past 5 years, Allen Ginsberg, Tim Leary and Jerry Garcia strike sorrow into my heart, and always will, despite the wonderful memories i have of them and their teachings. I find it really amazing how poets like Allen and are able to span literary decades. "Ah! Shall be my mantra- America's gasp of awe- Ah as fireworks ascend & light glitters faery shimmering in treetop darkness sky over Eastside Park July 4th-Ah As the enlightened Aborigine sighs his soul-journey with birds to New Guinea...." - -Allen Ginsberg Kristina PS- Tori was being played at UCF today in honor of a 'Speak Out' about abuse against women thing! Tori is pretending that she is not being beaten in this song. It's about a woman trying to get out of an abusive relationship. Laura died today. I'm a little more affected by this than I think I thought I might have been (if that makes any sense). It was in 1989 when a now-defunct national broadcaster (The Breeze, based in Minneapolis, I think) played this entire CD on the air, and I was taken. An epiphany, was this. Not so much was it the voice or the music, but the sentiment behind the music which touched me so deeply (like anybody here can relate to /this/). I just drove around for an hour or so until it was over, not wanting to stop listening to it. The next day, I found the CD and played it a few hundred times before I was able to move on. I ended-up buying everything I could get by her, of which much was only available on vinyl, *used* at that, and found-out that her earlier works didn't have quite the same effect on me, but that I'd discovered her at the right time. _Mother's Spiritual_ (1984) is probably my other fave, but now I must listen to them all again, a small homage to pay this wonderful artist. Laura wrote and performed many a touching tune in her 30 or so year career, some of which are on this recording I'm listening to. For those who are old enough to remember, she wrote several songs which became very popular as performed by others, like "Eli's Comin' (3 Dog Night), "And When I Die" (Blood, Sweat & Tears), & "Wedding Bell Blues" (The 5th Dimension). "I'm not scared of dyin' And I don't really care If it's peace you find in dyin' Well then let the time be near If it's peace you find in dyin' When dyin' time is here Just bundle-up my coffin 'Cause it's cold way down here And when I die And when I'm gone There'll be on child born In the world to carry-on." Darkness falls upon my hollow heart this moment. RIP, beloved friend. I wish you harmony. <><><> ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V2 #99 ************************************
