I just called in because there are (again) some questions I have to ask: 1. What's the story behind "It's a happy day", the third song featured on the Tori-Stories box-set? It's obviously not on the "Baltimore" single. Somebody even told me once that it is a cover. Tell me, tell me, I need to know the truth!!! (That's my Fox Mulder impression for you there). 2. That duet she did with Stipe from REM: has it actually been recorded or what? Has anybody of you fairies ever heard it? 3. I'd be interested to hear all the latest new about the the new video- collection that's rumoured to be released sometime this century. 4. This is actually more of a suggestion to you: attach a second set of speakers (so-called 'surround speakers') to your stereo-equipment (if possible, that is!!) and then you'll have Tori in 3d sound. It's really amazing. Especially the songs that have a lot of studio-tricks in them, like layers of vocal overdubs for instance, come out really great!!! 5. See ya all somewhere over the rainbow!!! I know this story very well, because in the spring of 1994 I spoke with Ms. Camilla Wharton, whose lyrics were the reason she commissioned this demo to be recorded. She had written those lyrics, and thought that if she only had a recording of a song to go along with them, she could send copies of it out to radio stations and music publishers, and somehow it would end up being recorded by known musicians, and she'd have a hit on her hands. I'll leave my opinion of her lyrics out of this and stick to what she told me about all this. She called a local, now long-defunct recording studio in Baltimore, Harmony Studios, and asked them if they could suggest any musicians to make the demo she needed, and was told, "Have I got the girl for *you*." It was the then Ellen Amos, just barely past her fifteenth birthday. Ms. Wharton had only a tiny portion of a melody in mind, one which she'd decided to borrow from some Paul Simon song. She actually had written him for permission to use the portion of his melody and he gave it to her. Nice guy. Tori came in with her musician friends as you can hear, and otherwise totally wrote the music, created the arrangement for the band, played the piano and sang on the thing--all in the space of one afternoon. No matter what one's overall opinion might be of the lyrics and the song as a whole, surely it bears testament to the multi-faceted talents of even the mid-teen Tori Amos. How many just-turned 15-year-olds could create all this from next to nothing in the space of a short afternoon? Ms. Wharton couldn't stop saying how talented Tori was back then in 1978. She remembered it as if it was yesterday. Ms. Wharton had 500 copies of the song pressed onto 7" 45 RPM discs and sent them out. Obviously, no one picked up the song. > 2. That duet she did with Stipe from REM: has it actually been recorded > or what? It has been, but no "final" mix of it has been completed. It was recorded for inclusion in the film Don Juan DeMarco and the Centerfold, (1995), and the film people decided it wasn't what they had in mind. What they had in mind was Bryan Adams, and that's who they got. His song "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?" was what they used instead. > Has anybody of you fairies ever heard it? Tori's ex-roommate Rantz used to talk about having a tape copy of it which he said was fabulous, and he wore it out. Rantz who is, BTW, the inspiration for the Tori song Flying Dutchman. ;-) > 3.
