Hmm. Well, I hope you're feeling better now. > my e-mail was essentially the same thing...i don't know if you read all > of it, but roseanne rips on everyone, as the simpsons do Yes, I read all of it. I appreciate the fact that you weren't ready to lynch people or something, as others seemed poised to do. :-) But even though you said all that, you still seemed to feel that the expression of opinion by one character on the show expressed the true thoughts and beliefs of all the writers of the show, and I took the opportunity to respond to this thread by replying specifically to your post. I think a bit of context is called for. I haven't watched Roseanne, (nor any sitcom for that matter), in many years. I have a hell of a lot of respect for her and the show, however. I find her always to be woman positive and girl positive. Last night I asked a friend who *does* watch the show about the nature of the character played by Martin Mull. She said his main function on the show is to verbally spar with Roseanne. She also said that he has an extremely high testosterone-laden male attitude, (even though the character is gay), and lots of attitude in general. Taking that into account, and then considering the girl who said in response to his comment about Tori, "Hey, I like her," were one to want to assign to this exchange any credence insofar as being the personal opinion of Roseanne and/or her writers, this reference to Tori ought to be thought of as being the next best thing to a personal *endorsement* of Tori by Roseanne, rather than the opposite. Ultimately though, I see no point in trying to ascribe comments made by a character on TV as anything beyond just that--comments made by a character on TV. Why people seem totally bent on putting some overall meaning on comments is beyond me. Comments are sometimes nothing more than comments. I mention things all the time in conversation and in email which simply make note of something, and then when I hear back from the person to whom I mentioned whatever it was, I come to find out that since I noted the mere existence of something that they thought I was espousing an opinion or belief! How wrongheaded and presumptuous! Martin Mull's character making a comment on Tori says nothing other than that the writers believed it a plausible thing for a character such as his to have said. I'm grateful to Karen and the others on RDT who brought this incident to our attention, as I am heartened to hear that Tori got a bit of high profile recognition. I mean, her publicist didn't call up Roseanne and *ask* for that the way she does to get Tori booked on talk shows and the like. Roseanne and/or her writers thought all by themselves that mentioning Tori served a purpose in context of the plot of an episode of Roseanne. That speaks volumes to me. Surely some people think Tori is grating to listen to. Why get upset when a character on a TV show says he feels that way? A bit more of this kind of thing, and all the people who have videotapes of the young Ellen Amos playing piano at their wedding will start thinking about how to share them with those of us to whom seeing them would be an overwhelming emotional experience. And in the meanwhile, I'm convinced that some people ended up looking into Tori Amos music for the first time. Way to go, Rosie! I don't really care that it was made, cuz that's what shows do--they make fun of people. But, why Tori? What I mean by that is: Tori IS NOT known well enough so that most people watching the show will "get" the joke. How many cds has BFP sold now? Just over platnum in the U.S. It doesn't make sense that they would site someone that isn't very popular(by mainstream standards). Alanis Morissette makes sense--14 million cds sold in the U.S. alone...but Tori? It doesn't make any sense...
