For precious-things people: This was on Torinews, and I am replying to Michael and thought I'd cc it to p-t as well. >ok, by now we all now how EXCELLENT that duet from the RAINN concert >was...& i immediately fell in love with that Maynard guys voice... >can someone tell me about Tools music - i've heard its a bit harsh & sounds >nothing like the sweet voice he had on "Muhammed" - is it really rough stuff >(metal) or it is a gothic (NIN) is it comparable with anyone ive might have >heard of ??? Let me know before i lay down 15 bucks on their CD & end up >using it for a coaster...tanks guys & gals.... heh, since this is supposed to be just news and not discussion... by the way if you're not on precious things, its a really relaly good group for discussion, anyways thats why i'm replying privately. Actually, I think I'll cc this to precious-things Anyways for some reason, Tool was called a NIN ripoff band in Spin magazine but that's horrible... I'd imagine they were around at least as long or longer than NIN. What it shares with NIN is its darkness I suppose, but tool is a lot more instrumentally pure, sounds live, not electronic, and no dance/electronic type beats, I don't think. More sustained unclean guitar sounds and feedback. Also I think Maynard does a better job of reconciling his hate thru his lyrics rather than projecting it.. but that's a highly subjective matter I suppose (no need to debate it). Ultimately to me that makes them a lot less harsh. He occasionally has some really sweet parts. I've heard the two most recent albums. I'm not a huge fan, but I really love his voice. Sweet, smooth, and kinda high. For the most part, yes Tool's music is harsh... There's a sort of softness in its harshness though, which is something I guess I can't really explain, just something I began to see in some harsh music. It's a angry sound, its a forceful sound.. but in a lot of ways it's ultimately a different manifestation of the same old soft hurt. In fact if it doesnt turn out to be just that, I'm rarely pleased with hard music. Unless it's just insanely silly. Those two extremes, hard and soft.. people often have to grow into. Oh yeah, bands like Tool: Heh, I can think of other bands that might compare, that are like dark, and hard, but nothing seems to really work. Tool is very much their own band. Samiam? Soundgarden? Quicksand? Filter? Barkmarket? Not really. I don't like some of those bands, but there are some common elements I suppose. Tori could do a really cool cover of Sober, I think. Enough babble. I wouldn't recommend Tool to a person with no prior interest in Tool's style of music, but ultimately... yeah. It was really cool that he sang Mohammed with her, but actually, from what I've heard of Maynard it could've been amazing with more work. I guess it was that they were being reserved so they wouldnt sing louder than the other. I really would hope he would sing on her next album. The two of them outright wailing together, in harmony, would be murder (in a very good way). Whatta buncha hooey. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Josh Sutterfield Musician/DJ-Wannabe/Social-Retard Jester Shot Fluid MaLjaMiN joshu@umr.edu http://www.umr.edu/~joshu - --- "Hello" -- Mahatma Gandhi ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Jan 1997 23:47:21 -0600 (CST) From: MaLjaMiN Subject: Re: Lifetime Concert-- >a cornflake girl is a person so bent on tradition that they will take >their own daughter to be circumsized.... thats why tori is a raisen girl, >a point i think too many people forget. Hmm, well since the line is "thought it was a good solution hiding with the raisin girls" It doesn't sound as though Tori was pleased about being one. She was speaking in past tense. Someone suggested about the opposite, that raisin girls are closed-minded, and Tori wasn't always as open-minded as she is, from what I understand. Not that I see the connection between that and cornflakes/raisins (except raisins are shriveled), but it makes a little more sense. "thought" implies she doesnt think it was a good solution any more. And "hiding" lends itself to this idea, because I don't think Tori now considers hiding from anything to be a good solution. It doesn't say she *is* a raisin girl either, just that she was. I don't see what the connection would be to being bent-on-tradition. Maybe we could move this over to precious-things and away from torinews as I'm doing...
