There is indeed plenty of evidence that hardcore porn in harmful to women, and there is considerable evidence that soft-core porn of Playboy's variety is harmful. The third category is erotica. I admit, Playboy sometimes falls into the harmless erotica category, but many times it does not. For precise defintions of porn and erotica, as well tons of studies and evidence in this area, I will point you to the web page of researcher Doctor Diana Russell, someone who has spent the last 20+ years researching the effects of pornography. Her defintion of porn includes Playboy. I think her conclusions are right. There is as much evidence that porn harms women as there is evidence that smoking causes lung cancer. It concerns objectivity towards an artist's musical performances in general, and Tori in particular. I was wondering if we could all drop our idolation for a while and compile a list of crappiest songs Tori has ever recorded. I'd like to nominate her cover of 'Ring my Bell' which I think is really on the edge of being irritating. I always skip it when I play the 'More Rarities' cd. Mind you: I am a big fan of Tori, I really am, but I'm just curious to see if there are more people around that don't blindly swallow everything she releases. Please mail me your nominations, along with a clear motivation, and I'll place the top then on this list in a month's time from now. Let's see how far we get and how honest we are!!!!! Stefan - The Flying Dutchman p.s. I also have some intellectual advice for all you pixies: Try reading Donna Tartt's "The Secret History" whilst listening to "Boys for Pele". How about: 1) The Wrong Band - almost (to me at least) seems like an throwaway track on Under the Pink. Could've easily been replaced by one of the B-sides. 2) Daisy Dead Petals - in the same vein as the Wrong Band. Here she seems to pixie-like for her own good 3) Muhammed My Friend - perhaps the only song on _Boys For Pele_ that I can't get "into." - ----david :) - -- http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Alley/8532/sarahring.html Join the Sarah McLachlan Webring!!!! ^^^^^ "This is the last song I can give you" -"The Last Song" SP "The world owes us nothing, but we owe each other the world" -"Joyful Girl" Ani ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Jan 1997 13:18:19 EST From: "honey, don't let it go to your head..." Where can you get the RAINN t-shirts? I know that they probably can be found at CK stores but I'm not familiar with the location of any CK stores in my area? (Buffalo, NY). So my question is, how else can I get my hands on a Tori shirt? Not only RAINN shirts but also any other Tori shirts. Thanks. Webster: "idolatry" 1: the worship of a physical object as a god 2: *immoderate* attachment or devotion to something What you are saying is that, as Tori fans, we are excessive in our attachment to the object of worship. > Mind you: I am a big fan of > Tori, I really am, I'm minding you. I'm glad you're a "big" fan but, somehow, I doubt it. You sound more like a troll to me, but then I don't know you on a personal level. All I have to go on are your words. If you are such a big fan, what is the point of this thread? "Objectivity" you say? There are so many people willing to trash Tori and her music why do you want to add your voice to theirs? Why are you asking us to join our voices to yours? Do you need our approval to validate your opinion? I hope you understand that I'm not some sweet-cheeked little innocent pissing down my leg over the famous person I idolize. I have not heard a Tori song that I don't like. Note the phrase "don't like." I don't blindly worship everything that comes out of Tori's mouth or from her fingertips. There are songs I do like more than others, but I like everyone that I've heard. > but I'm just curious to see if there are more people > around that don't blindly swallow everything she releases. Therefore, Stefan, from this terribly "objective" statement you've just made, since I've not met a Tori song I didn't like, then I'm blindly swallowing everything she releases. Correct? Or are you saying that anyone who is objective and still likes all her songs simply has poor taste, no powers of discrimination, or some other failure of intellectual acuity (unlike yourself, of course). I resent your judgemental attitude, to which I respond judgementally. Charlie (blindly worshiping his goddess, her music, her red hair, her piano and ground beneath her dainty little feet) who's going to post your message and my response to rmta and see what response it gets there.
