There is nothing on the site that I can find that says the voting is only open for local listeners. Therefore I think voting is fine. And with more and more stations getting live realaudio feeds (though I don't see one here), local stations are becoming more global. But honestly, if they had wanted to keep the voting local they would have either a) said so or b) not counted votes from out of town voters Neither is being done. So go to http://www.wqbk.com/ and vote for Tori. I think she is leading now! Yours in Tori, Mikewhy - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Michael L. Also, Tori has entered my thoughts recently...on New Year's Day, I ended up attending a screening of the new film _Breaking The Waves_. Has anyone seen it? It's been playing to large crowds at arthouses lately. The plot revolves arund a simple-minded young woman who lives in a very religious (Calvinist) community in Scotland. The church denies her many things, but she's able to fulfill some sides of herself thorugh her passionate marriage to a lusty man from across the sea. He ends up sustaining an injury from his job on an oil rig which prevents him from many of the activities he so enjoys (*ahem*). In order to keep their marriage alive, he requests that Bess (the protagnist) sleep with other men and relate the experience to him - a request that comes with some tragic results. Many old-school feminists have expressed anger with the subject matter of this film, whose enigmatic ending could be construed as mysogynist. Coming from a fairly religious background, however, I had an entirely different reaction to it. I saw it as a comment against the Church. In Calvinism, women may not speak in church, or attend funerals, and I got the impression that this particular strain had many of the same hangups about sex and women's sexuality. In many of the scenes, I thought of Tori's quote in _Spin_: "We kind of skulk off into the darkness to fulfill these sides of ourselves. We get tied up or defecated upon because we've judged our true desires...so harshly." The quote in the subject line made me think of "Mohammed My Friend" or "Father Lucifer", as did Bess' love of music. In the first scene, Bess tells the clergy of her plan to marry Jan, and one of the pastors, who disapproves of her plan to wed an outsider, asks her if the outside world has brought anything of good. Bess' response: "Their music." So there you have it. I apologise for ruining it for anyone who hasn't seen it yet, but I did want to hear the opinions of any Toriphiles who've seen it. It's is supposedly imported from Australia, but I think it might a bootleg. I found it at the Virgin Megastore in San Francisco, hidden away in the Tori import section. The reasons behind my suspicions is that this CD is really cheesy. It's green, yellow, and black. On the front of the CD bears the cover photos of LE and UtP. Inside, it has the Australian copies of LE and UtP, they have the look and feel of an authentic CD, but I don't know... It's probably just me being paranoid... It is the only interview out of hundreds that I've read that she ever mentioned any details so I would guess that this is true. Anyway here's what she said... "I'll never talk about it at this level again but let me ask you. Why have I survived that kind of night when other women didn't. How am I alive to tell you this tale when he was ready to slice me up? In the song I say it was 'Me and a Gun' but it wasn't a gun, it was a knife he had. And the idea was to take me to his friends and cut me up, and he kept telling me that, for hours. And if he hadn't needed more drugs I would have been just one more news report, where you see the parents grieving for their daughter. "And I was singing hymns, as I say in the song, because he told me to. I sang to stay alive. Yet I survived that torture, which left me urinating all over myself and left me paralysed for years. That's what that night was about, mutilation more than violation through sex. "I really do feel as though I was psychologically mutilated that night and that now I'm trying to put the pieces back together again. Through love, not hatred. And through my music. My strength has been to open again, to life, and my victory is the fact that, despite it all, I kept alive my vulnerability" Hmmm....I'm sure I've read/heard somewhere Tori saying she was "almost" raped too...I thought it was this article but throughout it she refers to being raped and the healing process...what a horrific experience.
