The '96 tour wasn't even the first concert performance of "Lovesong"... it seems little known these days, but Tori actually played "Lovesong" in response to a fan request back in October '94 at a show in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. I think she played it just to get the annoying fan to stop bugging her. :-) Anyway, I don't think she played it again during that tour, but she resurrected it for the harpsichord for the Dew Drop Inn tour. Bootlegs of both the radio show and the '94 Kingston show are floating around, keep your eye out for them. The radio show is absolutely phenomenal, the DJ plays the original for her so she can learn it, and she plays a brilliant version of it right after, no practicing, and no mistakes. By the way, shortly after the UtP tour Greg Burrell compiled an excellent list of covers Tori has played, I don't know if he ever updated it for covers performed during the 96 tour. I think there are a couple of other songs that you have in the 96 list that she actually first played in 94, so if you can find Greg's old list somewhere you'll know for sure. It is on the "Dreaming" bootleg. p.s. it is excellent! While I really enjoy the harpsichord version, I'm a sucker for the piano. OK - I've been meaning to ask your guys about this song :) When Tori played the Palladium in the UK in 94 she went off the set list and played "Mary" because "this just decided it wants to come out". Tori then continued with a story about "Mary" that I've never really figured out. She said: "So basically this song is very interesting...because this is a b-side and it was supposed to make Little Earthquakes and it got kicked out and its the only one that's really forgiven me for anything. But this song was like the most important one that I wrote for Little Earthquakes and the funny thing is that it never got on but everything else was built around this one..." So I've always wondered - is Mary her, is it her mother, is it Mother Mary, is it Mary Magdalen, is it Marianne or is it all of these? Why has it forgiven her? How is it the basis for LE? Ummm...any ideas? Why has it >forgiven her? How is it the basis for LE? Well, maybe all of these... I think primarily magdalene, and maybe her mother... i can see how she might write with mary m in mind, but perhaps drawing something from its duality as her mother's name. Or not. But, at the springfield concert she went into this song by first talking about mary m... i forget exactly what she said, but then she said the next song was called mary, and played it, so that made it pretty clear that mary m has some major significance. .. hmm actually the way mary is addressed doesn't sound like she's talking about her mother at all though... sounds more like she's treating mary like a daughter .. "growing up isn't always fun... don't be afraid" and again with a... crucifixion guilt type thing "when i think of what we've done to you..." and since she equates mary m with jesus.... yeah. And some other lines fit with the idea that she's talking about a prostitute... "everybody wants a piece of mary"... something about buying and selling her. Hmmm i'd dare to say it's also tori addressing herself. Sometimes the most comforting words I've ever heard, I say myself. Goodniz gracious the music during, and how she sings "even the wind, even the wind cries your name" gives me chills. I just listened to it, to look closely at the lyrics. I didn't know, but i'm not surprised that it was the centerpiece of LE.
