Also a couple of days ago somebody needed a ticket to the Cincinnati show. I was able to upgrade my seat so I do have an extra ticket to that show if the person is still interested, it's not a great seat but it will get you into that sold out show. Troy ------------------------------ From: Richard Holmes Date: Tue, 9 Apr 1996 11:15:30 -0700 (PDT) Subject: Y Kant Tori Read? Hi all, There was discussion on the "precious-things" list about what our favorite songs on "Y Kant Tori Read" were, and my favorites are definitely the "Etienne Trilogy", followed by "Floating City". Which brings me to a somewhat annoying happening: Last year I bought a copy of "Y Kan't Tori Read (and other rarities)", which included 6 bonus tracks. It was copyright 1988 by Pacific Recording Corp, in LA, and had "Ode to the Banana King (part one)", "Song for Eric", "Happy Phantom (live)", "Ring My Bell", "the Happy Worker", and "Workers". Well, I had enjoyed this on my car stereo, as well as my home stereo, and then I had to buy a portable for work (changing jobs left me without a CD-ROM / player). Well, it skipped like crazy during the last half of the songs; I bought cleaners, etc., and finally discovered a hairline crack right down the middle, clear across the cd, cutting the thing in half. I've since discovered another CD with this problem the same way. SO, I need to replace this one (the manager of the store graciously offered a credit (i didn't even have the receipt), or replacement, but can't find the CD for re-order). I looked up Pacific Recording Corp in LA information, but it wasn't listed (!*). Has anyone else experienced these types of cracks before? I found another on my copy of Pauline Oliveros' "Crone Music". Does anyone know where I can track down a copy of this one, even used? I'd prefer not to pay "collector" prices, since I payed normal import ($25) price for this one. Also, does anyone know of any sources for out of print / used CDs which can be accessed by the 'net, phone, or snail mail, in general? I'm finding that I keep running into these situations... =;^) Thanks, Richard. \@/ @ | Richard A. Great! It's now 00:39 GMT, and I cannot connect for the Tori IRC chat. What a load of shite. It's either "can't connect to IRC server" or "You are not allowed to send to this site". I've waited weeks for this. Grrrrr..... it's not Tori's fault, but it's someone's..... A whole hour spent trying to connect and then when I do, a nice message saying "We have Internet Problems, so fuck off"!!!! For a start, MTV should have preempted the influx of Tori fans and made approprate measures. The AOL-Internet link was a daft idea anyway, it ws never going to work. The twats who spammed the channel should be identified and then shot. I ran home from the pub in order to talk to my angel and, although I'm firmly versed in Internet disspointments, I really hoped something I held so dear to my heart might come true. Still, never mind, eh? Fuck, the progressive rock chat went okay last year.... I have partial transcripts of what i think was a chat with tori. I'll post them to RDT if people want me to I can't garauntee they are actually tori. Some idiot hackers took over the channel. Who's to know they didn't have it the whole time. Jake ------------------------------ From: abbe@MIT.EDU Date: Tue, 9 Apr 1996 23:49:37 -0400 Subject: the IRC fiasco Before you all go off on MTV (ok, too late for that), I want to say a few things from my point of view, having been connected pretty much since their server came up and watching things develop... The idea they had (I figured this out about this afternoon) was that they were going to try to accomodate as many users as possible (they could handle about 2000) and that they knew it would get very chaotic with that many people talking at once. So they planned to turn the channel "off" when Tori showed up, and instead they would have normal people go to the channel. We would be able to submit questions through individual messages to a question-person from MTV, and Tori would put her answers up on the IRC channel so everyone would see the answers and the stuff from the MTV host etc. Significantly before this started, if you connected to irc.mtv.com, it was like a normal IRC server and there were a lot of people chatting and being obnoxious. Then they turned it off about an hour before Tori came on and it was mostly fine. By about 6pm, if you were connected and saw lots of stuff spewing by and people claiming to be Tori Amos, you were not talking to Tori and you were either on the wrong server or the wrong channel. As soon as Tori came on, as I understand it, some very unfriendly people decided that the way to show that MTV sucks and hadn't gone about taking every possible precaution about running a chat with Tori as they could have was to make the server utterly useless. They basically kept breaking into the system, undoing the thing that kept everyone from spewing at Tori and making it impossible for either us or Tori to read what was going on, and then making enough fake connections and fake spews of information to crash the server. Then none of us could get back on, and as soon as the server came back the MTV people didn't have time to reset it before everyone else came on and said "huh?" "where's tori?" "mtv sucks" "what's going on?" etc, and which also gave the hackers time to get right back in and crash it again. If you didn't notice that you got dumped from the MTV server when it crashed, you probably saw a lot of conversation going on really quickly and scrolling by, because you would have been put in the #MTVArena channel on your default irc server, and a lot of other people were there making noise and goofing off and pretending to be Tori and stuff. The few times that they got it going, you would have gotten "You are not allowed to talk on this channel" if you typed any random stuff, and occasionally someone named "yoot" would have come on and said "We're sorry we're having technical difficulties." Tori did post once through the MTV guy, MTVMattP; he asked a question about religion and she answered for a bit. Then she had to go perform; they never managed to get it back up and running well for the trivia stuff afterwards, and the MTV people treated it too much like a TV show (not surprisingly) instead of an interactive conversation. In some cases it was the best they could do, in others it's kind of too bad that there isn't a better way. I think if Tori goes on the net she should do it as a completely quiet, non-public event: just read rdt for a while and respond to a few posts now and then from a bunch of different addresses, any other way is too chaotic. My transcript got destroyed in all the confusion between servers; xterm script logging doesn't work that well with IRC. Sorry. It contained the same stuff that eric@netvision.net.il posted already, anyway. I think that AOL got the whole thing without the hackers trying to crash it, because, well, AOL isn't as full of competent but obnoxious hackers as IRC is. Hopefully someone on AOL got a good transcript of the whole thing and will post it here. - -abbe ------------------------------ From: "Lucy M Carey" Date: Wed, 10 Apr 1996 00:49:44 -0400 (EDT) Subject: enough! About that chat session, did anyone see Tori perform tonight?! That's what it's all supposed to be about, isn't it? I mean, the raw emotion she expresses in each of her shows, that's the most important thing she gives us. Not some dopey interview with MTV. So if anyone saw her in Florida tonight, please, fill us in on the details! I can't wait until May 31 and June 2! That's when I get to go see her! 3rd row for the 2nd of June! Yippee!
