Box 328606 Tori Amos Columbus, OH 43232 Missy & Richard Caldwell, Editors Fanzine ------------------------------ From: mfgr@bart.nl Date: Tue, 19 Mar 1996 20:40:36 -0100 Subject: Tori Live in the Netherlands 16/3 (contd) Hi, Resuming my story from yesterday, here's my report of the two concerts Tori gave in Amsterdam on March 16, 1996. After the big success of meeting Tori on Friday afternoon, I figured that I'd best meet her again if I were in Amsterdam 4 hours before the start of the first concert that day, which would be at 3 pm. I went to the RAI building (dunno why it's called RAI BTW) early in the morning and arrived at 11 am. I went around the building and even found the artists entrance, but no people (read: other fans) were present and i was soon called by a man who said that I was on private property. Geez, no signs or anything, but considering that the bus already stood on the property I figured that Tori was probably already in anyway. I spend the following three hours elsewhere in Amsterdam, where I bought her new CD-singles at a record fair, plus a promo of Talula, with 2 tracks (one being the 'tornado mix', the other the album version.) The concert started at 3 pm, again with Willy Porter. I was looking forward to hearing 'Cold wind' again, but he didn't play that song. HIs set was cut short because there was some sort of time pressure, so he only did a few solo songs. His last track was "A day in the life", from an obscure group from the 60's, who reportedly originated from Liverpool (The Beetles or something). He played it wonderfully skilful, although I thought the cover was a little uninspired. The last notes were sheer brilliance, though. He went all the way up his strings ending on the highest notes I've ever heard coming out of a guitar. Tori started, as per usual, half an hour later. In the mean time, the front row was still empty. This was strange, I thought, and so did Mike, a fellow fan whom I met two years ago. He did what every sane person would do in this situation: he walked up to the first row and sat down. After some nervous waiting I decided to do the same and thus got me a seat in the front row, middle. I never managed to sit this close to Tori! This seat was a great one, I could see everything Tori was doing, even when the lights went out occasionally. She started with Beauty Queen and Horses, followed by Icicle. These songs were skillfully played, of course, but I couldn't make out if her mood had changed anything since yesterday, when she was so sad. After "Icicle" that became obvious, though. She sat down facing the audience and wanted to say something, when someone from the audience shouted: "Flying Dutchman!" After some confusion, because Tori didn't understand what was said, and people started repeating it, she only said "Okay!" and played the song. It was obvious that she liked playing it, she was almost standing up at times and the track rocked. The song was followed by Caught a lite sneeze, accompanied by Steve and Tori playing the harpsicord. Another very pleasurable experience, since Tori also used the piano, midway through the track. When singing the chorus for the second (or third?) time, she quit playing the piano and started beating with her hands against the piano, making it an acapella piece. Then, when she was singing the "girl zone" piece, she turned her head away from the piano, and to the harpsicord, so that the word "zone" faded out and in from one mike to the other. It resulted in an applause, which Tori seemed to appreciate, since she played very playful by then. I really liked Steve's role in the tracks "Little Amsterdam", "Cornflake girl" and "Doughnut song". He added a new dimension to Tori's concert without asking for too much attention. I do hope she keeps experimenting with guest musicians, I think it's very good that she does it. Bells for her on harpsicord is a nice experiment as well. Although less rockier than Friday, this track has found a new incarnation on this instrument. And Me and a Gun keeps on haunting - somehow I always hope to get it over with because I know the words so well and I don't really know what to do with this song. It's been discussed before: what do you do: clap after this song? It seems so ridiculous in a way. But we applauded anyway. The first encore was pretty basic with China and Damage. I was quite surprised, because I'd thought we'd never hear China again, because of her breakup. The second encore started with Tori saying that the harpsicord would leave us now, and it (sorry... "she") wouldn't feel sad because these two gorgeous Dutch guys would come and take her away. While Tori started "Past the mission" a new instrument rolled on and I figured that would be the harmonium I heard so much about. I was blown away by "Hey Jupiter" on this instrument. I finally got the feeling I was waiting for all the time during the past two concerts: the goose-flesh, the tears near to my eyes. I knew this song would do it for me, but yesterday it didn't work. It needed this harmonium. It was beautiful, and I wanted to hear her play more, especially on this instrument, but then the concert ended. I went down to the cloakroom and got back my coat and bag - and had to wait for half an hour. Then, I went out and stood on the street for a moment, thinking, how do I get better seats? After this first row experience, all I wanted was get near to the stage, while I only had seats for the balcony sixth row, which is probably the biggest distance from the stage in all of the room! Fortunately, I met a girl there, who wanted to get rid of her ticket. She had 15th row, which was a hell of a lot better than what I had. So we decided that if I could sell my ticket i'd get hers and she'd get the money. While waiting for more than an hour, we talked a bit. She's an exchange student in Nijmegen and she was, like me, into Tori and Sarah McLachlan. Why I didn't ask for her name (and other info) is still a mystery to me. We were probably too busy talking... Finally, someone came, wanting to buy a ticket. We charged him the amount she'd paid for the ticket (so nothing illegal there, I think) and I promoted to the 15th row! And so I got to the last of three Tori concerts at 8.15 pm. Someone managed to smuggle in a DAT recorder, so maybe a recording of the concert will turn up... but I was soon halted by someone from security. He asked if I had something like a camera with me. I did, because I wasn't about to turn in my stuff at the cloakroom, then have to wait to get my stuff back, then miss the last train back to Den Haag. And so I showed him my camera, saying that I wouldn't use it here. (Wouldn't make much sense anyway, since it flashes and I _hate_ flashes during Tori concerts.) He offered to keep the camera for me and return it after the concert. Well, I didn't see much harm in that, so I gave it to him. Then, Willy Porter started. The set was the same as yesterday evening, except for "I want you back", which was replaced by a song called "Jesus on the grill", something about a truck with a cross on its grill, bumping grannies off the road. Very humorous. In the mean time, some wellknown faces got up to the front row again. So during the break I went there, but I went too late. One of the lucky ones said I could take her seat, and so I did. I promoted to the 4th row, which is quite an achievement coming from balcony 6th row!! I wonder why those VIPs from the record company didn't turn up. Undoubtely, those seats were reserved for them, and yet they didn't come. I think that is rather criminal. The concert was, and that's no surprise, again very beautiful, although Tori didn't talk much. She did play "Losing my religion" which was a pleasant surprise. She also dealt with some people shouting track names after :Little earthquakes:. One of the tracks mentioned was "Baltimore". "Oh come on, you don't really want to hear that one, do you?", was Tori's reply. Then she played to sentences of the song. Then she remarked: "If you're ever recording something really bad that you want no-one to ever hear again, don't worry: it will be heard!". It seemed a little cynical to me, but I liked it... I was again pleasantly surprised when "Talula" followed, with a backing track and a wild lightshow. I never paid any attention to this track up til now, I will now, because it sounded great live. With three encores, this concert ended. I didn't feel tired yet, like I did two years ago after two concerts and four years ago after one. I think this tour is the best one yet. She's found a good balance. After the show, the blonde guy appeared on stage. He said that Tori wouldn't be doing much tonight; no autographs, nothing. She'd leave straight away. He also said that Tori would most probably return in September to Holland and mentioned Rotterdam as one of the city's he'd seen. I received my camera back from the security bastard, and noticed he'd taken out my film. I asked him why he felt it necessary to provide this extra service, and he replied that I could have made photographs in the room. That was a load of crap I'd never heard before in my life. What photographs would I have made with no-one on stage yet?? The only thing he had ruined were my photo's from Friday afternoon, made outside of the artists entrance. Nope, the photographs could not be found, they were destroyed, said the asshole. Nope, he couldn't give his name, the fascist and nope, he didn't know an address of his employer, this horses' ass. If there are any Dutch people reading this: Mojo Concerts is the organization, and the fascist in question is bald, fat, ugly and has a thinking ability of a cockroach (although in comparison the cockroach is probably more intelligent). But that isn't much of a reference, since all of Mojo's employees seem to look that way. So that was a bummer to end the day. I really liked the concerts, but I pray to God that Tori won't be booked through Mojo again. It will make going to Tori that much less enjoyable. I did catch the last train, BTW. Just.
