Having read the list of acceptable topics in that list at least four times, I wonder whether concert report are permitted? I might not recall it exactly, but somewhere in a dark edge of my brain, covered under hundreds of thousands of rather useless than really deep thoughts, I remember Tori complaining about those set lists... Since I won't find myself doing things to her or the list owner's dislike, I ask you at first. Thanks in advance! Ciao, this was Wolfgang speaking. PS: Are there any archives of previous 'Precious Things' digests? Thanx. - -- "I leave you these words behind Wolfgang T. Vampires seem one of the least interesting mythological items to me, but that's probably since I know almost nothing about them. I felt the same way about werewolves until I learned about the shamanic overtones, what with werewolves being a symbol for the shapeshifting into wolves to descend to the underworld to do battle with the demons below so that the harvest would be good. And we think *our* jobs are tough! :) > And about Tori's musical gifts: someone already made the > point about Vladimir Horowitz and Glenn Gould (and Horowitz > was not a composer and Gould wasn't much of one.) If it sounds good, hear it, I always say. Trying to define music in narrow terms, especially by pedanticists who often don't even compose themselves, strikes me as counter-productive... > Basically, the kind of natural musical gift she has is very > rare and very strong; there are very few people, as Meredith > said, who could write songs as strong as "Bells for Her" or > "Marianne" as improvisations. I have to agree here! Although I tend to think many people have much *more* of a gift than they allow themselves to develop, in part because we as a culture raise a select few performers to the status of deities and discourage musical / artistic / poetic expression by all others. I agree with Pauline Oliveros (composer) in that *everyone* should compose (maybe the world would be a better place). I guess I'd make a lousy professional critic... \@/ | Richard A. I recently acquired the _Aquarian Weekly_ February 20th-26th issue containing a cover story and interview with Tori. I'm willing to type it up, but I think I remember someone else typing it up and it being on one of the lists. Either way, I'm looking for an on- line version of the text to send to a friend. Could anyone who either actually typed the article or who has a copy of it please send it to me? My e-mail is harris@accnov. allencol.edu. Thanks! Keller" Date: Fri, 15 Mar 1996 23:37:52 -0500 (EST) Subject: Singles, etc. Well, the =Talulah= singles arrived at Tower Records today, and I couldn't resist buying both. The version of "Talulah" here has a completely new intro; it's called the "tornado mix." One single has three new songs, "Frog on My Toe", "Sister Named Desire," and "Alamo." They are all major as far as size and complexity (as opposed to the brevity and slightness of the "Silly Songs" etc.), but minor as far as their quality: they all on a couple of listens seem more rambling and less intense than the songs that made the album. The other single has an 11-minute(!) dance track whose entire Tori contribution is endlessly repeated samples of the intro of the "tornado mix"; it's basically a composition by Brian Transeau. "Amazing Grace/Till the Chicken" is another Tori Amos/George Porter, Jr. piece like "Samurai." I'm not sure this other single was worth the $10, and I'm not sure I'm going to keep it. The =Musician= magazine cover story has come out, and it's a fascinating piece, describing how thoroughly involved Tori was in the recording and mixing, demanding tiny technical changes to ensure the finest shading of the character of each song. Also, =BfP= in its seventh week holds on at #29. Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard are both pianists of tremendous power and energy, but neither seems to play much more than power chords and glissandos. Tori's technique is much broader. I saw that limited-edition box & book. At $40 I balked, though I wanted it. I'm also balking at the $28.50 price tag and large venue for the New York concerts. ------------------------------ From: Michael Curry Date: Fri, 15 Mar 1996 23:48:37 -0500 (EST) Subject: Re: Concert Reports On Fri, 15 Mar 1996, Wolfgang T.
