A lot of the clips were from Mtv's Week In Rock episode. Oh... and for some reason Tori had a lot of dark blue eye makeup on (which I could do without)... kinda like in the live photoshoot on Atlantic's page. Merideth wrote: >Tori's World Cafe interview was broadcast yesterday. Great stuff. Took >up the entire second hour of the show. A couple interesting bits: Wow.. that's kewl.. I have the world cafe interview from the UTP years.. a lot of in-studio performance that time... kinda suprising she didn't do it this time. Did she get asked about the PigTure like every other dj does? (annoys the hell outta me) >-- I've seen talk elsewhere as to why "Beauty Queen" and "Horses" are one >track on the CD (there is a definite dividing groove between them on the >vinyl, btw). I kinda think they should have split them up though, sometimes I'm in the mood to hear JUST horses. >-- "Talula" is "the space on the album with permission to dance". Yes, Neile... very nice person. :) >Aside from the "Father Lucifer" 3-in-1 bridge, >the backing vocals on "Doughnut Song" are pretty damned transcendent too. Yes... Doughnut Song is also one... the build up on the last chorus... sends shivers down my spine everytime. :) >>I heard she did Bells For Her on the harpsichord... very >>interesting... > >?!? Whoa. I read a review of this the other night and they said it didn't strike them... I think it would be incredible, although I'd LOVE to hear it on the ol' upright. ;) Mike wrote: The lyrics, as always, were wonderfully creative and mystical. Although it was interesting that the booklet seemed to have lyrics that I did not hear sung, and seemed to miss other lyrics that were sung. Yeah... I noticed this too. Also, in the Doughnut Song I could swear she says "had me a drink and a kick and your message" sometimes. Lyrics I adore are: "if my heart's soaking wet, boy your boots can leave a mess"- Hey Jupiter wow... this one just hits me hard... wonderful. "honey we're recovering Christians"- In The Springtime Of His VooDoo this one just makes me smile... I still have a lil x-tian rebellion in me. ;) "quickest girl in the frying pan"-Marianne I dont really know why I love this line, we'll just say... it's awesome. "you told me last night, you are a sun now, with your very own devoted satellite"- Doughnut Song This is SO real... makes me think of a relationship I once had. "there's a light in your platoon, I've never seen a light move, like yours can do to me"- Putting The Damage On Such beautiful imagery... Okay... I'm gonna shut up now coz I could go on for hours. This album definitely is a *wonderful* work. Dear Fairies, I posted this on Really Deep Thoughts originally, but perhaps it might spark some discussion here? _Boys for Pele_ was a simple masterpiece, in my opinion. I loved Tori's use of harpsichord, brass, strings, and a gospel chorus to truly explore her ability at song composition and create wonderful harmonies. I loved her exploration into a jazz feel, especially with "Mr. Zebra" and "In the Springtime of His Voodoo". The lyrics, as always, were wonderfully creative and mystical. Although it was interesting that the booklet seemed to have lyrics that I did not hear sung, and seemed to miss other lyrics that were sung. Just a few I enjoyed: "shaved every place where you been" ("Blood Roses") "cut out the flute from the throat of your loom" (same) the mention of Gladys (Kravitz, from 'Bewitched'?) in "Professional Widow" "and I thought you'd see with me you wouldn't have to be something new" ("Hey Jupiter") "when you're the sweetest cherry in an apple pie" ("In the Springtime of His Voodoo") A couple of minor notes I made to share: "Professional Widow": cool mix of sound effects, language, water, rock beat, especially against the old 1800s hymn-feel of the song's chorus Jazz feel in "Mr. Zebra" reminded me of "That's What I Like Mick (The Sandwich Song)" (CALS B-Side). Harmonies on the word "sweet" in "Muhammed My Friend" reminded me of "Sweet Dreams" (Winter B-Side). "Little Amsterdam" -- spacy '70s feel, background reminded me of the Dharma Karma mix of "God". As a confirmed Trekkie, delighted in hearing Tori sing "Warp speed, Mr. Sulu!" in "Springtime of His Voodoo" ... =) Loved the swell of the Black Dyke Mills Band behind "'cause boy you still look pretty / when you're putting the damage on". "Twinkle" was a beautiful way to end the album, with hope of healing ... if, as Tori said on "120 Minutes", _BFP_ is meant to be a novel, it was a wonderful way to end the story ... And Delirium, of _Sandman_ fame, says in the 'Brief Lives' storyline, "I think twinkle's a pretty word." Hmmmm ... =) She says thanks to Rantz in the credits! =) ... (Rantz is a rmt-a poster and a good friend of Tori's.) **Beautiful** work by Cindy Palmano ... and I must remember to thank her for that photo in the middle of the booklet. =) And a few questions to bounce off to the folks on RDT: "What tie she's got in her right dresser tied" ("Twinkle"): habitually suicidal female teenagers often wear ties around their wrists to cover the scars ... might this be an obscure reference? "Hey Jupiter" -- Jupiter = Eric? "Talula" -- a warning to Eric's new girlfriend? And one last thing ... a possible interpretation of some of the photo on the cover of the CALS single and in the booklet: reflector: "caution: don't come nearer to me right now" horns: reference to cuckoldry, someone being unfaithful mattress: symbol of sex/shared love, now dirtied This album is definitely on a tie with _LE_ as my favorite Tori album. They can't beat each other because they are *definitely* different styles. =) Mike ------------------------------ From: Neile Graham Date: Mon, 4 Mar 1996 14:28:32 -0800 (PST) Subject: A Horses Connection Hi, all: Meth asks: > Hey, I know someone else who was there! Small world. (Neile, are you with > us?) Yes, I'm here. Of course! Just for your interest, here is something I posted to rmt-a a while ago because the connection struck me so much: I have no idea if Tori knows this poem or not, but it certainly ties in with the song and with Tori's work. This is by Joy Harjo, a wonderful poet from the Creek tribe. I don't want to quote the whole poem for copyright reasons, but here are the stanzas I couldn't stand to leave out because they seemed to me to reflect some of what's happening with _Boys for Pele_. Well, maybe more with Tori's work as a whole. from SHE HAD SOME HORSES She had some horses. She had horses who were bodies of sand. She had horses who were maps drawn of blood She had horses who were skins of ocean water. She had horses who were the blue air of sky. She had horses were fur and teeth. She had horses who were clay and would break. She had horses who were splintered red cliff. She had some horses. She had horses with long, pointed breasts. She had horses with full, brown thighs. She had horses who laughed too much. She had horses who three rocks at glass houses. She had horses who licked razor blades. She had some horses. .... [several stanzas skipped] She had horses who got down on their knees for any saviour. She had horses who thought their high price had saved them. She had horses who tried to save her, who climbed in her bed at night and prayed as they raped her. She had some horses. She had some horses she loved. She had some horses she hated. These were the same horses. Well, seeing as she had some ridiculous number of radio appearances in the area that day, it was probably totally unfeasible to lug equipment around for an in-studio performance. It was kinda nice to just listen to her talk, though -- one doesn't get to experience that too much. It's funny, though -- sometimes she really does seem incapable of communicating without using music somehow. When she was interviewed on NPR's All Things Considered a couple years ago she was at a piano, and easily half of her responses were punctuated in some way by totally free-form piano accompaniment, or just consisted of her singing something to illustrate whatever point she was trying to make. On World Cafe she didn't have a piano to fall back on, but she did end up singing some responses anyway! :) >Did she get asked about the PigTure like every other dj does? >(annoys the hell outta me) Nope. Harpsichords are hell to tune, and they go out of tune very easily. Plus, her harpsichord has to remain perfectly in tune with the Boesendorfer at all times, which makes life particularly difficult. (I wonder if Geoffrey Sapsford is still her piano technician? Really nice guy.) >Yeah... I noticed this too. The first time I heard the song was when she performed it on 120 Minutes (and she inverted the nouns as above), and I could've sworn that's what she sang. (Of course, I still refuse to believe she's singing "building tumbling down" in "Caught A Lite Sneeze". Check out the video and read her lips. It's "beauty can't believe I didn't know our love was...". Makes a heluva lot more sense that way, doesn't it?) >"you told me last night, you are a sun now, with your very own devoted >satellite"- Doughnut Song This is SO real... makes me think of a >relationship I once had. You can definitely hear shades of _Little Earthquakes_ percolating underneath it. The Dream King asked: >Has anyone seen Tori's video for CALS yet? I haven't herd much talk about it >on here. Its amazing, actually worth watching Mtv for. Definatly something >to check out. Yep. I still think it's M.C. Escher meets a Pink Floyd album cover. I have no clue whatsoever as to what the hell it's supposed to signify, but I love it anyway. :) Mike Harris mused: > "What tie she's got in her right dresser tied" ("Twinkle"): > habitually suicidal female teenagers often wear ties around > their wrists to cover the scars ... might this be an obscure > reference? Hmmm.... Marianne killed herself, we've got "Don't blow those brains yet boy" in "Professional Widow".... hmmm... > "Hey Jupiter" -- Jupiter = Eric? Give the man a prize! > "Talula" -- a warning to Eric's new girlfriend? If I'm rememebring this correctly, Tori said on World Cafe that Talula is the name of the girl making the journey in BfP (though I was half asleep by that point, so I'll have to check the tape to be sure). Not sure if the song is a warning or not, though. +===========================================================================+ |Meredith Tarr meth@delphi.com| |Boonton, NJ USA http://remus.rutgers.edu/~woj/meth/| +===========================================================================+ | "nothing's gonna stop me from floating" - Tori Amos | +===========================================================================+ ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V1 #17 ************************************
