Keller" Date: Sun, 3 Mar 1996 08:35:59 -0500 (EST) Subject: Details, details Actually, it was a new, never-before-heard song she did on WNEW that took a left turn into the middle of "Sugar." They really should have changed CD tracks, too, between "Beauty Queen" and "Horses." Oh well. As for background vocals, let's not forget "The Pool," which alternately sounds electronic and like something from =The Dreaming=. Anybody else noticed that the chords for "Little Amsterdam" are the same chords as the verses of "Sugar"? And speaking of "Little Amsterdam," I was listening to the album yesterday for the first time in several days(!!) and by listening hard finally noticed the clavichord, dancing atop the texture very briefly and to small effect somewhere past the middle. Might have been more fun if there had been more of it. (There were a couple other bits I noticed for the first time this time, but have forgotten the rest.) (A very rich album, have I mentioned that lately?) I continue to be amused (especially since that's where she changes from harpsichord to piano on the TV versions) by the appropriateness of "Right on time..." being the first line of the bridge of "Caught a Lite Sneeze." ------------------------------ From: FroggyJen@aol.com Date: Sun, 3 Mar 1996 11:13:06 -0500 Subject: Re: tori on world cafe and other things METH@delphi.com wrote: >Oops. :) Hey, was the House of Blues thing for an upcoming episode of the >TV show of the same name? If so, anybody got an air date? Nope. Sorry...it wasn't taped. The show was for KROQ, and so they're the only one's who got it. :þ Jen ------------------------------ From: "Mike Harris" Date: Sun, 3 Mar 1996 14:48:12 GMT-5 Subject: _Boys for Pele_ Review I posted this on Really Deep Thoughts originally, but perhaps it might spark some discussion here? _Boys for Pele_ was a simple masterpiece, in my opinion. I loved Tori's use of harpsichord, brass, strings, and a gospel chorus to truly explore her ability at song composition and create wonderful harmonies. I loved her exploration into a jazz feel, especially with "Mr. Zebra" and "In the Springtime of His Voodoo". The lyrics, as always, were wonderfully creative and mystical. Although it was interesting that the booklet seemed to have lyrics that I did not hear sung, and seemed to miss other lyrics that were sung. Just a few I enjoyed: "shaved every place where you been" ("Blood Roses") "cut out the flute from the throat of your loom" (same) the mention of Gladys (Kravitz, from 'Bewitched'?) in "Professional Widow" "and I thought you'd see with me you wouldn't have to be something new" ("Hey Jupiter") "when you're the sweetest cherry in an apple pie" ("In the Springtime of His Voodoo") A couple of minor notes I made to share: "Professional Widow": cool mix of sound effects, language, water, rock beat, especially against the old 1800s hymn-feel of the song's chorus Jazz feel in "Mr. Zebra" reminded me of "That's What I Like Mick (The Sandwich Song)" (CALS B-Side). Harmonies on the word "sweet" in "Muhammed My Friend" reminded me of "Sweet Dreams" (Winter B-Side). "Little Amsterdam" -- spacy '70s feel, background reminded me of the Dharma Karma mix of "God". As a confirmed Trekkie, delighted in hearing Tori sing "Warp speed, Mr. Sulu!" in "Springtime of His Voodoo" ... =) Loved the swell of the Black Dyke Mills Band behind "'cause boy you still look pretty / when you're putting the damage on". "Twinkle" was a beautiful way to end the album, with hope of healing ... if, as Tori said on "120 Minutes", _BFP_ is meant to be a novel, it was a wonderful way to end the story ... And Delirium, of _Sandman_ fame, says in the 'Brief Lives' storyline, "I think twinkle's a pretty word." Hmmmm ... =) She says thanks to Rantz in the credits! =) ... (Rantz is a rmt-a poster and a good friend of Tori's.) **Beautiful** work by Cindy Palmano ... and I must remember to thank her for that photo in the middle of the booklet. =) And a few questions to bounce off to the folks on RDT: "What tie she's got in her right dresser tied" ("Twinkle"): habitually suicidal female teenagers often wear ties around their wrists to cover the scars ... might this be an obscure reference? "Hey Jupiter" -- Jupiter = Eric? "Talula" -- a warning to Eric's new girlfriend? And one last thing ... a possible interpretation of some of the photo on the cover of the CALS single and in the booklet: reflector: "caution: don't come nearer to me right now" horns: reference to cuckoldry, someone being unfaithful mattress: symbol of sex/shared love, now dirtied This album is definitely on a tie with _LE_ as my favorite Tori album. They can't beat each other because they are *definitely* different styles. =) Mike ------------------------------ From: Michael Curry Date: Sun, 3 Mar 1996 16:22:39 -0500 (EST) Subject: Administrative stuff Hi all, Ummm.... welcome to precious-things! Better late than never I guess. :) So far we have 50+ people getting the loose version, and about 35 getting the digest. A few people have written to woj and I asking about (or complaining about) one of the "Unacceptable Topics" guidelines we put in the info file, so we decided that the guideline needed to be clarified. Here's the new version: - Posts that do not directly pertain to either Tori or her work (i.e., no debates about feminism, religion, rape, etc. please). We are not saying that these topics should never be mentioned or discussed, since they obviously do relate to Tori and her music, only that such discussion should be limited to how these topics relate to Tori rather than general discussions of the issues. I hope that makes our intent clearer. We are basically just trying to prevent the often longwinded and occasionally acrimonious debates that we've seen on rdt and rtma. If you still have any questions about this or any of the other guidelines please feel free to ask woj or me. :) One person has asked about archives of the digests. So far there aren't any, and woj and I haven't discussed plans to have any. Digests 1-12 were just your friendly list owners hashing out details and testing the list, so you didn't miss anything by not seeing them. :) Mike | Michael Curry / mcurry@world.std.com / CIS: 70372,3563 | | Reaching-From-Nowhere -- The Milla Mailing List | | reaching-from-nowhere-request@world.std.com | | Precious-Things -- The Other Tori Amos Discussion List | | precious-things-request@smoe.org | ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V1 #16 ************************************
