In some instances, I wish Tori wouldn't sing live either. > Tori calls herself a feminist She doesn't though really... unless in one of her more-"recent" interviews (I stopped reading them around 2001). She made the remark "feminism is dead" or similar in the early-to-mid 90s. I think, unfortunately, she's more of a Mary Magdeline-ist these days. n. As opposed to the cost of a download or a friend dubbing a cassette of copying their recording of a concert onto a 50 cent CD, $12.50's not negligible. It's the sentiment behind it that I think is crap, though; price hasn't anything to do with it. As for it being "anti-feminist"... well, that's not actually what I said -- something I'm not going to comment on cuz I haven't had time to ponder it, and I know that I don't intend to make time to do so (though feminism isn't unconcerned with males, unless we're talking about a certain brand around in the 80s, so whether or not she has male fans is irrelevant, just to address that question) -- but what I meant was that she seems to want to communicate a certain spirit in her art that isn't really congruent with the way she's sold. I just don't see what's wrong with allowing fans to do this kind of recording themselves, that's all. *shrug* Becc On 8/13/05, Bevan Burkin wrote: > > Becc wrote: > > >Tori calls herself a feminist and then allows the grassroots aspects of > her fandom to be >eroded in favour of making her stuff available only to > those who are at the top of the > >economic heap... I have a brilliant idea - why don't all 3 of us on this list find another 9 people who would, say, be willing to put forth $1 each... then we will have/nearly have the $12.50 or whatever price they are, and somebody can arrange to burn the discs & distribute them to the other $1 donate-ees. Because I am only marginally interested in hearing the piano bar songs - and then probably once/a handful of times... and the artwork surely isn't anything to get excited over. Why don't we do it? I'm prepared to order/burn/distribute if you wanna send some of the cost this way... n. Why produce anything new? :-P > Well, for a start, a lot of fans have been hoping that Tori would NOT rush to make her next album, but would take time to consider a new direction, new instrumentation and a new 'sound' (and take care of her voice and piano skills). This gives us something to busy ourselves with in the interim. Secondly, Tori has said 2007 for her next album ... which is consistent with her general pattern of an album every two years (and yes, Nathan, I know there are exceptions to the rule, both less (TVAB after ftch) and more (TB after SW), so no need to point it out). Hell, TB only came out THIS YEAR. So she's got plenty of time to give us 'tidbits' to tide us over. Besides, now that commercial singles are out of the question, she needs something else to sell in the interim to keep us keen and talking. Thirdly, we've always had lots of other non-album things to buy (soundtracks, videos, singles, etc), which haven't demonstrably impacted on her album sales (feel free to 'prove' me wron here, Nayth). Besides, these are live recordings, so it's not like she's been toiling away in the studio for them - they're a special item not sold in stores to appeal to a certain niche of her fanbase. I doubt your average fan will ever even find out about them. > I guess I was just so amazed when I heard of this > band having an > express rule about audience members being allowed to > take audio > souvenirs of the concerts they attend, and then so > amazed at the fact > that I should *be* amazed at this (am I so used to > being viewed by > labels as a market rather than a fan? I'd agree with this point a little more if not for the fact that fans have been begging for these things for years (me included). Ever since Pearl Jam started releasing offical 'bootlegs' (and even before, around TVAB time), there's been a strong push for clean, soundboard quality recordings of Tori's complete live shows ... Bootlegs can be good, but they rarely compare to what can be done with an offical recording. If the fans want it (and have been petitioning for it), then you can't really blame Tori for offering it. Personally, I love the idea (and am relieved that she's choosing a selection of shows, so it's actually an affordable enterprise), and hope she does the same for previous tours (which have been recorded since at least DDI). And this offer doesn't really pre-empt proper/fan bootlegs ... the shows being offer have been seeded/torrented for months, and you can get decent audience recordings of them right now for free if you want. You almost certainly still will after the official ones are released. They're different products, with the same subject matter. If you wanna embrace the fan community ethos and begrudge Tori exploiting it, then don't by the official ones. There's nothing compelling you to but your own sense of obligation/completism. Personally, I applaud Tori's decision to start giving us fans the kinds of products we want (first the offical bootlegs and soon the Rhino 2 disc album remasters with oodles of bonus material a la Elvis Costello *drool*). And the prices are reasonable for what we get. Finally, I don't LIKE the Tori fan bootleg community. It's clique-y and rude and holier than thou and it fails to live up to its purported community spirit. I'm happy to deal straight with Mrs Hawley thank you very much. Jules Try Yahoo! Tori's back catalogue (well, the Atlantic stuff) was recently acquired by the Rhino imprint of Warner Music (a fact that has been substantiated). Considering that Rhino and Atlantic are sister companies, this isn't a big stretch of the imagination ... Rhino specialise it acquiring and remastering back catalogues of artists. Most recently, they acquired the entire back catalogue of Elvis Costello. The results are truly spectacular. Each album was rereleased as a 2 CD set. The first disc is a faithful copy of the original album, albeit remastered (not TOAL remastered, but *proper* remastered). The second disc is bonus material, including demo songs, unreleased tracks, alternative edits and live cuts. Including some never before heard stuff. They also had HUGE booklets with liner notes by EC commenting on the album, the tour and each song ... really well done. They also released a 'complete singles' set, with all the singles, remixes and b-sides. Supposedly Tori's their next project. Quite exciting ... !
