Which isn't to say that Tori (or, at least, her people) aren't "very smart", as you say, because someone's obviously aware of the obsessive nature of her fan-base and the fact that for a number of clods, if you release something with Tori's name on it anywhere, it must be bought to keep collections Complete. *avoids sidelong glances at Nathan* So, sure, it's smart, but... it's insane! Dude! That comment about, "After years of paying top dollar for low quality bootlegs, Tori Amos diehards now have an alternative"... Well, yeah, it's true to the letter, but do they have to insult our intelligence by making it sound like it's a *good* thing? There's a reason, after all, why those bootlegs we "pay top dollar" for (and, does anyone actually pay top dollar for these things, by the way? Aren't they traded or just shared online?) *are* low quality. I went to a concert recently for a band who are pro-bootleg -- they make sure their venues understand that concert-goers are not to have recording equipment taken off them by people on the door -- which means you're free to not hide your recorder under layers of sound-muffling clothing lest it be confiscated; and that you could take along recording equipment that's more sophisticated than a mobile phone. Kinda dwarfs any attempts to make selling "professional bootlegs" look like caring about getting quality to the audience at low cost. Tori's bootlegs just look to me like another way to justify not allowing people to record shows that, c'mon, aren't cheap to go to. Scaaaabby! I thought downloading mp3s obviated the 'need' for that. > Tori's bootlegs just look to me > like another way to justify not allowing people to > record shows that, > c'mon, aren't cheap to go to. Scaaaabby! The plus side of them, though (and no, I've not placed an order & am still undecided as whether or not to do so) is that at least it's not some stupid Tori website exclusive you can only hear and not download in crappy streaming format if you have the CD in your D: drive or whatever Scarlet's Web attempted to be, but failed. > Becc, who, uh, may or may not be premenstrual ;-) What, you're not in your 'change of life' phase yet? n. I guess I like the fact that it comes from Tori with her endorsement and the money will help her make more music in the future. Hopefully, the extra money will mean extra releases or something - everybody knows Tori loves and more importantly, respects her fans. I understand that the moment they will be out I could probably download them. I've downloaded lots of live Tori mps3 and love, love, love them, so to have them on cd soundboard would be awesome. Small price to pay for over 5 or 6 years of downloads, it's Tori FFS! OK I think I'm officially going to buy anything Tori officially releases - - officially. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Aug 2005 13:17:46 +1000 From: Rebecca Appleton Subject: Re: [oztori] tori thighhighbootlegs - another slender pair of thighs On 8/13/05, Bevan Burkin wrote: > Woah Rebecca - LOL - what a rant! See, there I'm in disagreement. I don't see how this impacts on whether or not she produces more new music at all. Except perhaps in a negative way: with these, she's satiated the fans for another year or more, hasn't she. Why produce anything new? :-P I guess I was just so amazed when I heard of this band having an express rule about audience members being allowed to take audio souvenirs of the concerts they attend, and then so amazed at the fact that I should *be* amazed at this (am I so used to being viewed by labels as a market rather than a fan? Bootlegs used to just be...bootlegs. Why is everything just an excuse to wrangle more money out of me?) that I'm unable to view this "official bootleg" deal without a bit of cynicism. I can understand if it's, y'know, Britney Spears or some other blatant "product" we're talking about -- sorry, Jas ;-) -- but Tori calls herself a feminist and then allows the grassroots aspects of her fandom to be eroded in favour of making her stuff available only to those who are at the top of the economic heap... Not trying to pick on you Rebecca, or join in the argument - I just always liked that idea. Being a 'whole person' in that context. Yikes. Given the back of her book (I haven't read the thing yet) says "I was born a feminist," jeez I hope she's moved on past that. Because if she sees being a feminist and being a whole person as being incompatible, I just started liking her a helluva lot less! I've only ever said that In The Zone was a good album. And if you ever did listen to it (heh) you would know. "bah," I say. "Bah!" Woah, again, sister girl are you reading what you are writing? Top of the economic heap? $12.50? $12.50? I also fail to understand how doing this is 'anti-feminist' ... Um, doesn't Tori have male fans as well? Bevan ------------------------------ End of oztori-digest V5 #102 ****************************
