I'll break it down into 3 parts: [re-posted:] Now that TBK has leaked, I guess it's time to start pulling it apart song-by-song in OzTori style ... PARASOL: I love it. It opens the album quite gently, but deliberately. I love the way the song 'builds' and she incorporates various instuments and textures. And I love the melody in the chorus. The lyrics, while a little oddly phrased ("I have no need for a sea view/For a sea view I have no need"), are also quite vivid and sad. When she tries singing in the upper registers ("When I come to terms ... ") she sounds like she's struggling, but the bridge still works anyway. The tone of the song kinda feels like "Scarlet goes to Ireland" ... I wish it had a viola backing it, but it doesn't really need it. I think this should have been the first single. This song also adds evidence to my "Tori is so gonna dump Mark" theory (more on that later). SWEET THE STING: Tori doesn't do sexy very often ... so this is a nice surprise. Actually, Tori gets her groove on a few times in this album, which is a good thing methinks (Tori seems to go from cerebral to cunty and back without hitting 'sexy' too often). Funky rythmn. I hear DMMCTV here (I am one of 3 people who likes that song!) and maybe Do It Again or Bachelorette. I like how this song builds in intensity too. It's subtle, as is a lot of the album. This may never make it into my list of favourites, but I'm glad it exists. THE POWER OF ORANGE KNICKERS: I'll get my one gripe over with first: the reference to a "terrorist" is SO unneeded, and it really grates on my ears. But I love the song otherwise. Maybe my favourite of the bunch. The way Tori chants "the power of orange knickers" and a few other lines reminds me of Bjork's Where Is The Line and Leonard Cohen's Dear Heather (both of which I love). I also love the line "this little pill in my hand" and the way she sings it. And the question "am I alone in this kiss?" is heartbreaking ... JAMAICA INN: I like the line about the sexiest thing being trust. Otherwise this sounds like some long-lost b-side. As such, it seems kinda lost on this album. Oh well, now that there are no more commercial singles, I guess we have to get our b-sides on the album. BARONS OF SUBURBIA: When I first heard the opening of this, I wondered if she'd rerecorded CALS. Sadly, the intro is not as good as CALS, despite the similarity. I have mixed feelings about this song. It kinda meanders a bit ... reminds me of a better Indian Summer or Seaside (ie, goes nowhere and takes its time getting there). Also, Tori's voice is a little on the nasal side (a la WTSF). But Tori really turns it around in the last few minutes. I LOVE the ending. I agree with the comments Molly Knight made in her review. It sounds like one of the cool live 'improv' endings she adds. I don't think Tori has ever sung so forcefully or passionately on a studio track. I usually get the feeling she's holding back on her studio releases (especially lately) ... so hearing her truly cut loose is really reassuring. I burned this track to CD and heard it for the first time in my car LOUD and at the end I cheered. SLEEPS WITH BUTTERFLIES: From passionate to comatose in 2 seconds. This really is an insipid little song, and I can't really be bothered trying to find something nice to say about it. Mercifully, it's short. Not a favourite though. Is she 'shananah'-ing??? THE BEEKEEPER: Kinda Suede meets Little Earthquakes (the song) meets Raining Blood meets Mountain. Slow, primal and rythmic. I will learn to love this one, I think. And she could do wonders with this live. Well, she would have if this was 1998. Still, in studio form, this song will one day rock my world. Just not today. MARTHA'S FOOLISH GINGER: This sounds like a long-lost LE track. It's beautiful. HOOCHIE WOMAN: Hilarious song! I wasn't sure about the title at first, but the way she sings "hoochie" is adorable. Love the use of the choir! And the lyrics are a lot of fun. After being so whiney earlier in the album, I'm glad Tori gave herself the chance to be super self-satisfied. And this is Exhibit E. And probably the most explicit Exhibit too: the whole album is littered with examples of Tori suggesting a man has either left her, or has cheated on her and made her feel unwanted or unloved or unworthy. In SWB and Parasol, she seems more shocked and plaintive about the news, in C&G she suggests she should move on ("keep on driving"), but here she flat out tells him (triumphantly) that he can keep the bank accounts and the house because SHE brings home the bacon. Okay, maybe this is all a metaphor for something else, but, if it's not true, I wonder how Mark's handling a whole album about Tori singing about being betrayed and moving on ... and especially this song, where she reminds her man that she's the one wearing the pants. Hmn. GOODBYE PISCES: Nice enough song. Not *terribly* noteworthy, but I think it could grow on me. Could be a long lost LE track (both a good and a bad thing in my books). Not as insipid as some of the other 'sweet songs' on the album, and Tori knows how to end it before it outlives its welcome. Oh, and I'm done with counting Exhibits, but this could be one ... MARYS OF THE SEA: Very Irish sounding. I like how this song shifts like Hotel (although they sound nothing alike). The lyrics are unsubtle, but I love them anyway ... I'm a sucker for Tori's 'histories', and this one (like Virginia before it) manages to straddle the 'historical'/'mythical' content with the theme of the album nicely. Cheeky Scarlet ref, and I love some of the imagery. I'm a sucker for any song in which Tori sings a line in French, so bonus points here. There's a lot going on here, and it all works really well. Not the stand-out track I hoped for, but a pretty solid effort, and a song I'll be happy to hear over and over. TOAST: The Gold Dust/Twinkle of the album. Tori's gone for another slow, stripped down, mournful ending. It works fine. OVERALL: I like a lot of this album, but a lot of it leaves me cold. I don't know if I'll warm to it (ftch is now easily my favourite album, but I couldn't make it through it the first few listens, but some of SHT is yet to grab me after about a year). Tori's voice definitely is showing its wear here, and, unlike SW, the production is less able to disguise it. But that's okay, because Tori has compensated with some long overdue displays of emotion (it's been a while T!). The hammond is much easier on the ear than the keyboards she's been using lately, but the piano and hammond still get buried too much in the mix, and there are no showstopping keyboard moments. I like that the album isn't as homogeneous as SW, but I also think it's more of a hit-and-miss affair than SW, which I think it overall very strong. Time will tell where this album falls for me, but for now I'm willing to say that Tori hasn't disgraced herself, and I have no plans to detatch my ears from my feet any time soon. Sorry for the long post ... makijng up for months++ of silence! Discuss away!! The music isn't up to scratch. And the lyrics are in China territory. I don't want the word 'perm' to be used in any song I own on CD, thanks Tori. Oh, and the lyrics are about as subtle as a Tori fan with faerie (sic) wings and sparkles. The whole Hawk/Dove, GWB = bad thing was done a lot better in Apollo's Frock. But consider this Exhibit B in the 'Mark is gonna be shown the door' theory of the case. MOTHER REVOLUTION: Exhibit C. This should be a b-side. A b-side she forgets exists. Which means she'll play it every concert. Third song in a row that sucks. The last line can stay I suppose ... it's kinda sweet. RIBBONS UNDONE: Tori doesn't do cheap sentiment that often. And when she does, she usually manages to add an interesting wrinkle to it (eg, "over Silbury Hill/through the solar field" or "through the eyes of Laura Mars"). Here she teeters precariously between 'sweet' and 'I'm about to get type 2 diabetes just from listening to this song', but I'll let her fall on the side of sweet. The unimaginative guitar line is gonna add fuel to the "Mac Aladdin is really an Apple Mac running the Aladdin software suite" consipracy theory going 'round. CARS AND GUITARS: I love it. One of my favourites. Tori really gets smutty with this one ... she must have relearnt how to use a metaphor by this track, thankfully. And the chorus is really passionate, which is nice. I also think the way she 'scats' (no pun intended) is cool. Exhibit D. WITNESS: I love this song too. The first few seconds had me worried, but she turns it around quickly, and the song hangs together really well. The hammond and the choir combo makes me think of Nick Cave c1990, which is cool by me! The really fast singing is something Tori's not done before ... it could be cheesy, but there's enough going on that it doesn't seem too much like a cheap trick. I also like how this song suddenly 'changes' a la Datura (the song slows dramatically and the music and vocals are pared down) ... the "is there anyone ... ?" part is hauntingly beautiful, and Tori's voice is quite nice here. I also like how, unlike Datura, she works her way back to the inital tempo/intstruments/lyrics. And I was pretty quickly singing along to the 'come on come on come on' ending. And I like the "hit it, boys!" aside. ORIGINAL SINSUALITY: Cool lyrics. Very much in "Raspberry Swirl" territory lyrically. Musically, it sounds like one of those live improvs she does before a 'real' song. I guess this is the equivalent of Wampum Prayer. It is better than Wampum Prayer. I kind of see Tori '& band' (meaning Matt & Jon) + Mark on the knobs/possibly 'Mac Aladdin' now as a slightly different "project" to 'the Tori of old' - ie like Genesis compared to solo Phil Collins - essentially they are the same, but one he's making albums with a bunch of other geezers that he isn't when solo. I don't like Tori's "Genesis" equivalent (well they've now done 5 albums together) as much as solo, so don't regard them equal anymore when rating their work. I may again be pleasantly surpised with her work if she ever ditches them - but for now I don't see it happening. "Oh well". More on the Genesis analogy - FTCH & TVAB were I thought generally pretty good 'Genesis' albums... but then "Peter Gabriel" (Caton?) - a major creative force, left & we got Genesis mrk II. - perhaps analogous to their mid 80s "FM"-staple period; which isn't the same/I don't like as much (although you get the odd gem, like 'Land of Confusion'). (*I just realised the added COINCIDENCE of Tori sharing a promo CD with Phil Collins right at the start of her career with the Cool On Your Island promo! *spooky* Plus she is arguably losing her hair like he. *bites knuckle*) > When she tries singing in the upper > registers ("When I come to terms ... ") she sounds > like she's struggling, but the bridge still works > anyway. See I *much* prefer Tori when she sings in her upper register (well, what's left of it). Her "chest" voice doesn't interest me much. I find she can sing with much more expression/melody when she sings high. With "Parasol"'s double vocal of one high, one low... you can place all your bets on which she's going to sing when she does it live ;) > The tone of the song kinda feels like > "Scarlet goes to Ireland" ... If you want to shop locally you will have to through a book or record store who will import it from the USA through a wholesaler offshore. This will take a minimum of 2 weeks, more likely 6-8 weeks. Just because the book isn't being published outside of the US, doesn't mean it won't be shipped to retailers outside of the US. With the breakdown in parallel importing laws, and the relative affordability of international shipping, we're seeing more and more small print run books (and CDs) being brought in from o/s rather than having a fresh batch made up here which is identical but for the indicia and the RRP on the back. I expect that trend will continue ... but it doesn't mean that you can't get your hands on a book relatively cheaply at a local retailer just because it didn't get a domestic print run. (And if worse comes to worst, ordering from Amazon won't kill ya!) And let's face it, an expensive book on Tori is going to be of even more limited appeal than one of her CDs. There are people here on a fan mailing list of hers that won't be getting it. Not everything Tori does is her giving a big 'fuck you' to Australia! J Find local movie times and trailers on Yahoo!
