This was in JJJ's weekly mailout. I'm not too sure what it means - I'm assuming the station's getting lazy and can't find someone to play songs for two hours so they're just gonna spin these albums. Interesting pick. //BACK IN THE JAYJ 12pm Sun 18th July Radiohead - OK Computer Tori Amos - under the pink Jas ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Jul 2004 03:28:40 -0700 (PDT) From: Nathanael-Quentin "®" Subject: Re: [oztori] on the jays Jaz wrote: > This was in JJJ's weekly mailout. > I'm not too sure what it means - I'm assuming the > station's getting > lazy and can't find someone to play songs for two > hours so > they're just gonna spin these albums. > Interesting pick. > > //BACK IN THE JAYJ 12pm Sun 18th July > Radiohead - OK Computer > Tori Amos - under the pink I wonder how that goes with copyright, airing an entire recording on air. Tsk tsk JJJ. PS - the point being Jaz? I'm sure we all own UTP already. n. ===== "whenever I hear 'watersports' I think of you" - Julian, 9/5/03. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Tsk tsk JJJ. Radio stations pay royalties on all songs played. (In Australia, funds are generally paid through APRA, which does the distrubtion to copyright holders.) If a radio station plays a full album, then the radio station just pays the prescribed royalty fee x12 (assuming a 12 track CD, as UTP is). There's really no problem, and it's really no different to JJJ playing 12 songs in a row that just happen to be owned by Atlantic (or whoever). So un-tsk, Nathan, as JJJ has done nothing wrong! (Also, a radio station is under no real obligation to play only singles or 'released-to-radio' songs ... they may do so since those songs are the most commercially viable, or because they have a general understanding with record companies to push the latest 'releases', but there is nothing preventing them from not doing so (unless they have a specific agreement with the record company). It's actually pretty hard to stop people using your copyrighted material provided that they pay the proper royalties, unless you can allege that it is actually damaging to you somehow ... Which is, probably, how Tori could have stopped Oliver Stone using MAAG, had he insisted and were he not afraid of being smacked.)
