It's a fact. But not everyone who buys an album will go see the artist. And not everyone who sees an artist's live show will buy their album. And it's just my personal opinion that Ani's music is probably pirated a lot more than Tori's. There are different principles at work. Anyway I wasn't saying that more people would see Ani than Tori, I was saying that Tori would not make any profit if she toured here. For example, I have a friend who burns everything -- including Tori -- but says that she feels too guilty burning Ani stuff, on account of her being a struggling indy artist who does it all herself, and can't really afford to lose sales to piracy like bigger "corporate" acts can. But, then, I expect that most Tori fans would be rabid enough to buy her stuff rather than burn it. I know that Tori made a big deal pre-SW about how much she was being pirated, but I expect that most of the people who pirated SW were still in queue to buy it the day it came out. Like me. And half this list. Hell I bought TWO copies the day it came out. And currently own three copies of the bloody thing. But I digress ... > Anyway I wasn't saying that more people would see > Ani than Tori, I was saying that Tori would not make > any profit if she toured here. > True. OK some "Ani stats" to quiet the Jaz's of this world (and also to feed my Asperger's-esque insatiable thirst for pointless statistics) re: supposed 'chart irrelevancy'... Ani's chart 'success' in Oz as far as my feeble mind can gather commenced in 1998 with "Little Plastic" castle which reached the dizzying heights of #57 on the ARIA top 100 albums chart, and spent at least an 'impressive' 4 weeks around, charting as follows: Debut week ending 29/3/1998: 57-88-61-74 - (then I don't know b/c the list I was subscribed to at the time stopped posting the full top 100... although it would be a safe bet to assume that it didn't stick around for much longer). Up Up Up Up Up Up was her best charting album here, making #31 & spending 5 weeks in the top 50 in early 1999. Her latest Educated Guess made #55 here week commencing 26/1/04. In other words, Tori has sold alot more than Ani in Oz. Jaz still writes, however: > Anyway I wasn't saying that more people would see > Ani than Tori, I was saying that Tori would not make > any profit if she toured here. Which makes no sense given that, as illustrated above, Tori has a (much) larger (commercially, at least) 'fanbase' here (although maybe not any longer after tripe like SLG) - and therefore is statistically more likely to be able to 'pull' more people to her shows & hence make more moulah. n. ===== "You've been in a rut ever since I've known you." - Jarrod, 21st February, 2003. I'm going to take a middle ground. I don't think that there is a DIRECT link between ticket sales and album sales. There are some acts/artists where I would buy the album, but probably not see them live. And some acts/artists that I would see live, even though I don't have every album. But, of course, generally speaking, album sales are a good 'rough guide' to ticket sales. But with artists that are KNOWN to be good performers/live -- like Tori *and* Ani -- I think that you have to make concessions for the fact that album sales are not the 'whole story' ... even though they might be a good place to start ...
