Well a true 'best of' should be a chronological singles collection (containing the single edits/mixes) IMNSHO. That aside... if you r trying a 'conversion' CD (the only people I have managed to convert in my life re: Tori have been an 'Alice' and 'Celia' - incidentally, the names are anagrams of each other... and even more spooky coincidences - their birthdays are on adjacent days [albeit 3 years apart]). > I want a good cross section of her albums (probably > minus YKTR). *sniff* how can you NOT include "Fire On The Side"?!?! My 'all important' opinion, album by album: LE: Crucify Precious Things Winter Mother (if it fits) UTP: Pretty Good Year Baker Baker Cornflake Girl (Edit) Icicle Space Dog BFP: Beauty Queen/Horses Blood Roses (to shock 'em ;) Father Lucifer Caught A Lite Sneeze Putting The Damage On FTCH: Spark Raspberry Swirl i i e e e Hotel TVAB: Concertina Lust Datura SLG: none ("Real Men" and/or "Rattlesnakes" if you really must) SW: A Sorta Fairytale Carbon I Can't See New York Virginia Gold Dust B-sides: Upside Down Flying Dutchman Take To The Sky Angie Smells Like Teen Spirit Here. I think "Pandora" was the first sign of Tori 'scarlet-izing' things. The verses & chorus (save the wonderful "line me up in single file" bridges) are soooooooo zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. > And Nugs, I know I didn't slot my comments in after > Rayfee's, but I couldn't really fit them in too well > ... so deal with it. The first 3 albums are alot more quiet then the ones that come after (ie, Choirgirl onwards). > I got lazy and didn't, and as a result > ended > up having to fiddle with the volume button ever few > minutes ... Well it gives you some time off from fiddling with other things every few minutes, so can't be all that bad. November 1994 - Records duet with Michael Stipe, which gets rejected from 2 soundtracks. When asked about it in a 1999 interview, she admits she doesn't even know where the master of it is. January 1, 1996 - Tori feels that her cover of "This Old Man" is worthy for release on the b-side of Caught A Lite Sneeze. January 8, 1996 - Tori feels that 'Samurai' and her 2 Chas n' Dave covers are worthy of release to an unsuspecting public on UK CALS part 2 single. January 22, 1996 - Boys For Pele is released. Track 8 onwards is rather WTF?! March 11, 1996 - UK Talula singles are released. That awful BT's Synethasia Mix unleashed upon the world. The horrible travesty that is "Sister Named Desire" also makes an appearance. July 2, 1996 - The 'remixes' of Professional Widow are released in the US. September 24, 1996 - In the Springtime of his voodoo remixes released. December 30, 1996 - "Professional Widow (It's Got To Be Big)" released as single in UK, and goes on to become her biggest hit, reaching #1. 1997-1998 - Tori decides to start putting the piano on the backburner, and hires a drummer & bassist to make "From the Choirgirl Hotel". Her voice also develops a new nasality around this point. Tori's natural beauty starts to disappear, and the make-up/airbrushing gets whacked on. 1998 - Singles start getting cancelled in the UK. Touring starts to diminish in the world-ouside-of-america. Tori thinks she is now a rock-chick, singing nasal vocals over a pedestrian band playing. Concerts vocally now become "Tori live + effects". Tori loses the ability to tell good sTories - and Prada shoes come to take their place. She gets married. Only four more b-sides get released on CD's you can buy after this point. 1999 - See above, only worse. She decides it would be a good idea to tour with Alanis Morrisette, and also records/releases the wretched 1000 Oceans. Supposedly a great live act, she releases a completely disappointing live album. 2001 - Welcome to the start of ConcepTori. SLG is created (in, we suspect, the space of 3 days maximum). Add whurly. Minus impressive vocals. Minus tunes. Gimmicks with CD's start - 5 diff SLG covers. 2002 - More concepts. This time about (omg how original!) America. More gimmicks - this time a map, 'polaroids', a useless DVD & trinket. Stuff starts to get cancelled from release in the US now. Bad live TV appearances start. 2003 - The year of releases that never eventuate: Taxi Ride single/video, SW b-sides, live DVD's. Tori's setlists become increasingly predictable & stagnant. She tours the same places 3 times. More concepts - with her 'sonic autobiography' released containing curious inclusions and glaring omissions. Another pointless DVD to add to the collection. The pictures get worse. Tori has well and truly lost her 'nerve' by this point. Lyrics on the 'sonic autobiography' get censored. Yes, but that at least was her record company's doing. She wasn't in interviews talking about how it was necessary because of some stupid idea. And as it was, that re-issue charted at a whopping #109 in the UK anyway, so was basically ignored/unheard of. What I *did* forget to add was what we just spoke about - the "tone down the piano & voice, pump up the bass! And again!" thing. Nadyne Mielke wrote: > Bitter much?
