[Nathan "®" ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 30 Oct 2003 16:37:49 -0800 (PST) From: Nathan "®" Subject: [oztori] new TOAL press-release! OCT 31, 2003: TORI AMOS, 40 year-old Cherokee Indian singer songwriter , self-proclaimed cornflake girl, and former piano-player for congressmen, unleashes her new poignant Greatest Hits album, "Tales of a Librarian" on November 17. The poignant set, which comes with a bonus DVD of three live (plus echo effect on the mic) tracks, contains 20 of Tori's best songs, including fan favourites "Me and a Gun" (recounts the true story of Tori being raped at gun-point, and later philosophising over it with Jesus) and the poignant "Mr Zebra" (recounts the story of Tori losing her virginity ["cause it's cold cold cold in my hole hole hole] to a multi-racial man - Mr Zebra [both black and white]), rather than simply being a collection of her top 10 smash hits. Amos shot to fame in 1988 when her then band "Y Kant Tori Read"'s poignant "Cool On Your Island" went to #1 on the charts, as a double A-sided single with Phil Collins' "A Groovy Kind of Love" [*using here the Julian P criteria for a 'single' these days - being merely a song on a disc that the record co. sends to the radio station... and btw, the single (well sans the YKTR track) did actually go to #1 in the US, I'm not just making that up. For those who might not know, COYI was actually released on a 3-track promo CD with Groovy Kind of Love/COYI (edit)/COYI (LP version)]. The band disbanded shortly after, however, due to philosophical differences (the other band members could deal with Cherokee Tori's interest in medicine wheels and 'the land', but drew the line at 'faeries'). Tori spent the next 3 years writing and recording her poignant debut solo release, "Little Earthquakes", of which half of the tracks from the album appear on "Tales of a Librarian". It appears, therefore, that Tori is finally admitting that Little Earthquakes is by far her most poignant work; and that everything else she has done to date pales in comparison. Sadly, however, another fan favourite, the quirky, poignant and complex "China" has not been included on the 'Librarian' tracklist. She then embarked upon a world tour to support Little Earthquakes; travelling to places so far, remote and primitive as even Australia! After a brief fling with Anthony Kiedis from Red Hot Chili Peppers whilst 'down under', Tori tottered back to the studio with then open relationship boyfriend and producer, Eric Rosse, to create 1994's poignant "Under the Pink". Soon afer, however, the couple split, leaving Tori with the hard task of finding another man to ghost-produce her albums in exchange for sex. She filled the void temporarily by co-founding the poignant PMAINN - Psychological Mutilation, Abuse, and Incest National Network - a phone-counselling service to cater for the women who are raped every 2 minutes in America (as Tori stated in her ad for organisation). The phone-line was the first to utilize voice-recognition software which instantly disconnected the calls of callers with a voice fundamental frequency below 160Hz (ie. men, because they don't also get raped). Step forward 'sound engineer' (a thinly-veiled title to cover up that he is actually her producer.. and not a very good one at that) Mark Hawley - the pair poignantly wed in February 1998, two years after Tori released some flop album that only delusional die-hard fans seem to be able to recall and recognise its supposed worth... something about suckling pigs and hating men. She did, however, score a hit amidst all the psychodrama - the stupendous "Professional Widow (It's Got To Be Big)", which featured the poignant affirmation of a looped "Honey bring it close to my lips yes" over an Arman Van Helden-provided techno beat. The Hawly-Amos coupling was a 'win-win' situation for all parties concerned - it relieved the increasing speculation that Tori was a rug-munching dyke; and finally ceased Hawley's mother and aunts from pinching his cheek poignantly at family get-togethers and pondering aloud, "When are you going to find a nice girl for yourself?" (Mark has had a long-standing relationship with Marcel, another of Tori's 'sound crew', for years). Tori then, sadly, increasingly vanished into thin air. Although she released albums almost every year (each of diminishing quality), none managed to re-capture the artistic merit, poignancy, or commercial success of "Little Earthquakes" or "Why Can't Tori Read?" Tori hit rock-bottom in 2001 when she released "Strange Little Girls" - a covers album of tracks originally performed by men... and in a (much) better and more poignant manner. Two-thousand and two saw the emergence of "FacTori" - the processing plant responsible for homogenising the musical content of her "Scarlet's Walk" release. Gone are the vivid piano arpeggios, the wild, soaring vocals, and the poignant originality (with a nod to Kate Bush - who, thankfully, most Americans have never heard of). Despite attempting to appeal to the 40+ demographic, ironically Tori's fan-base seems to be getting younger and younger (and smaller). Perhaps because the majority of issues she sings about are fully dealt with by mid-adolescence in the majority of most normal-functioning people. The FacTori is also responsible for re-working Tori's fantastic, fan-favourite 1992 b-side, the poignant "Mary", as the first 'single' release from Librarian. Another stupendous b-side from the same period, "Sweet Dreams" has also been included on the set; bring the tally to 8 out of the 20 songs being from the Little Earthquakes era. So committed to her Cherokee heritage, Tori plans to spend the profits - if there are any - from Tales of a Librarian on consulting Michael Jackson's dermatologist to see if "skin rubification" is a cosmetic surgery possibility these days. Play roulette with that Medicine wheel, Tori! - -------------------------------------------------------- ===== "Basically, I got more than I bargained for Pitifully, you competed with me Ironically, there were roses and kisses But honestly, if you think you'd succeed" - - 'Suddenly' (demo version), Siobhan Fahey. "SP [speech pathology] is the arts degree of the science world." - Celia, 28/10/03. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
