I'm sure if she really tried she could sing the way she did in UTP/BFP days - ie crystal clear and able to hit higher notes with ease. However, I think Choirgirl is fantastic and that songs like Spark, Black Dove and Hotel work fabulously with bass and the other intsruments that she began introducing into her work. I mean, most artists get criticised for never changing their style. At least Tori has made attempts to broaden her musical range. All though some forays weren't successful IMHO (ie SLG and some TVAB) she certainly has bounced back with SW. The songs on SW are all backed by the band in some way (can't think of one off the top of my head that isn't) but I think that worked really well. That's what experimentation teaches you. You know, I too feel aprehensive about TOAL because I don't see the need to rework the songs that were so good already, but I'm going to wait to hear it before I start casting aspersions on it. Her voice sounded really good/clear (well for Tori these days ;) on those recent radio performance solo mp3's from September. So, I think she is capable of getting rid of the 'croakiness', but the higher notes is another question. People on @forumz were nearly wetting themselves with glee when she could (supposedly) hit the high notes at the end of Purple Rain recently - but the 'fact' is, her voice on them wasn't nearly as powerful as it was in 94/96 when she did it. Plus she has the echo effect (something which annoys me - I want to hear Tori sing LIVE - not 'live + effects' - we have Kylie et. al. for that [ouch!]) to help cover up her flaws. I think she is a lot better vocally solo when she doesn't have to compete to be heard. To some degree it's 'understandable' that she shies away from the higher notes sometimes these days - I mean, she's getting older, and it's normal for women's voices to get deeper & lose some of their upper range as they age (those 4 years of studying SP weren't completely in vain ;). "Look at Kate Bush, look at Joni Mitchell" (although they are both smokers - well Kate apparently gave up last year... and Tori 'only' dabbles with pot/crack ;) But then neither Kate nor Joni ever did the Precious Things gurrrrrrrlllllah live nearly every night for a year [although Kate competes in the 'let's see who can damage their voice the most' stakes on certain tracks of The Dreaming]). > However, I think Choirgirl is fantastic and that > songs like Spark, Black > Dove and Hotel work fabulously with bass and the > other intsruments that she > began introducing into her work. "Don't get me wrong", I like most of the post-Pele studio 'band' tracks - just you sense that some didn't quite need drums (hello Josephine). > You know, I too feel aprehensive about TOAL because > I don't see the need to > rework the songs that were so good already, ...but she isn't. (squeezes 'stree release' thing and utters calming affirmations under breath). She's re-recorded TWO of the tracks. Nathan. ===== "Sex in its many variations is a way of life for the Scorpio Man.
