"The trouble is", though, Andrew, that if this 'record' is success (*chortle*), then it is likely to be the one that Tori is remembered for in 10/20 years' time; or used as a point where to start for those Tori-curious - say a la Kate Bush's "The Whole Story". WHY then is it necessary to have such an (imnsho) awful/stupid picture on the cover, and not a more 'normal' one of Tori as a better statement of 'who she is', etc. This cover looks like it should be called "Bathhouse Betty" (waves to Dan H if his eyes happen to be glancing upon this). I'm surprised she didn't call Tash "Tabitha". I mean, Tori nearly had "Samantha" (in the form of Sammi-Jay) in the 80's.... Why is it bad to point to a compilation album and use that as a starting point for those who are curious about Tori? The track listing is a reasonable retrospective of her Atlantic career. > WHY then is it necessary to have such an (imnsho) > awful/stupid picture on the cover, and not a more > 'normal' one of Tori as a better statement of 'who she > is', etc. And what would be normal? The artwork for her albums has differed greatly over the years. With the exception of the plain TVAB cover, and the 'well they suck to go along with the music' SLG covers; I've pretty much liked all of Tori's album covers... and they (again apart from SLG) show her in a fairly 'natural' light - not "Oh look Tori dresses up to help sell the 'concept'". To be fair, double albums don't sell very well, simply because they're more expensive than a traditional album. Further, live albums don't sell very well, because only the die-hard fans buy them. > Yes of LE :) And isn't she supposable 're-working' > (aka 'butchering') them all? That said, I have to say that I hope that a re-worked 'Crucify' as done on the SW tour doesn't make it on there. :) Some of the reworking was simply remastering, at least according to the guy who's been doing her strings for awhile. He said it was more akin to doing what they would've done the first time around (especially for LE) if they'd had the time and budget. > Um we're talking front covers here. OK I probably don't mind if they're 're-worked' if they are GOOD. But I'm not counting on them being that way. Plus IMO, 're-working' your old songs smacks of desperation. Bananarama's last album in 2001 had about 4-5 re-worked songs from the 80's. Nuff said. > Yeah, 'cause SW isn't all about selling a concept. hyeh. Admittedly, we now have 12 of the tracks confirmed or close to confirmed, but there has been no word on whether it will be a 12 track compile, an 20 track compile or a 2CD set. So at best we have to be tentative in our opinions about this. Secondly, even being tentative, of the songs we *do* have confirmed, half of them seem terribly unrepresentative of her Atlantic career. "Snow Cherries from France" was not recorded during the Choirgirl sessions; "Angels" is apparently a song written very recently (after her departure from Atlantic); "Mary" is an obscure b-side from a very early single that hasn't ever developed a big fan following or live presence (cf "Sugar", "Honey" and "Cooling"); "Sweet Dreams" and "Upside Down" are far from her best work, and far from indicative of the Tori that we know from her Atlantic years. Admittedly, "Spark", "Precious Things", "Winter", "Silent All These Years", "Crucify" and "Cornflake Girl" are all wise and solid choices, and I have a big soft spot for "Horses", but there are still a lot more songs that need to go on the CD before I'd say it was "representative", particularly we need more from Boys for Pele and From the Choirgirl Hotel, since those are her two big fan favourites, and because those two got royally shafted on Venus Live. Still Orbiting. *takes Breath* J ===== ___________________________ www.livejournal.com/~blade_to_ice ___________________________ __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
