Flights between major US cities are cheap if you meet the necessary fare rules. However, if you're not at a big airport (and you won't be, not in SC), and if you can't meet weird fare restrictions (the best fares often require you to fly on a Tuesday or Wednesday each way, and we never ever do one-way airfares), you get screwed. I can fly from San Francisco to Chicago for US$180. The last time my parents came to visit me from Detroit, however, they paid US$500 each and considered themselves lucky. And lemme tell you, there's a huge difference between a genteel Southern accent and a real redneck Southern accent. All of that said, my best friend (also an Australian lad) is doing a postdoc at Purdue in Indiana. South Carolina is miles better than that place. So it's not as bad as it could be. And if you're in SC, the nearest major city is Atlanta, so I can give you all sorts of pointers for restaurants, pubs, stuff to do, etc. Oh, and you'll have to tell me whether SC still has the little bottle law. The last time I was there (a few years ago) bars had to serve alcohol out of those little bottles that you most commonly see on airplanes. The point of this law is to try to stop people from drinking. /nm {I'm sure that they still have dry counties, too} ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Jan 2003 19:12:17 +1000 From: AndrewR Subject: Re: [oztori] dribs and drabs At 06:20 PM 19/01/2003 +1000, M.T. -Oz wrote: >>From: Nathan "." > >Maybe Mark doesn't want to come here b/c his skin >>wouldn't do so well in the sun? >>Or maybe they think they've gotta stay away from Oz >>due to the potential terrorist threats Johnny Howard & >>co. would have you believe we're susceptible to any >>moment ;) > > >Perhaps the Aussie dollar being less than 60cents US has something to do >with it?So there'd be the extra bucks to bring the show this far and then >the prices they'd have to charge would be quite huge to get the same price >they're getting in the USA? Well, simple to cut costs she doesn't have to bring the Band. And she can eat at subway instead of having a bloody chef. And she can drink Australian wines instead of carting around a whole crate load. It starts off with drums and bass and piano with no voice for the whole first minute. She's actually singing with a melody and playing with an actual tune, and has shortened words.. it's not "iaaaaaaaaah waaant to killllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll... this waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitttttttttressssssssssssssssssss" It's "So i want to kill this waitress"... wiht melody. And PROPER piano. And proper words, not drowned out monotone.. and she's going "peEeace" not "peace".. She actually highered her voice.. and she's actually singing in actual notes.. It sounds like the album. Omg. Awesome. No huge pauses either. The chorus is cool too.. wiht the usual "but i believe in peace", but she really screams "BITCH"... it's not "bitch.." "it's BITTTTTTTTTTTCHHH".. Just thought i'd let you all know it's actually decent and goes for under 5 minutes, let alone under 14!.. It's actually cool. Worth getting. In the true Oztori spirit with confessions, I had a huge crush on Dieter Brummer when I was younger. The friend of his character, Damien in Home and Away, played by Matt Doran made a great breakthrough in The Matrix playing Mouse, but seemed to fizzle out again. Yes, the Shane ... errr .... I don't know about Bjork. I loved her to pieces in Dancer In The Dark & really love Selmasongs, and some of Post... but her music is so abstract. Please, you can't deny that Sugar is a piece of genius, can you? I definitely agree with Bells For Her, but I've only ever heard a dodgy version of Lovesong on a bootleg, so I can't comment on that (though it sounded great through the crackling and distortion.) And Sister janet I haven't heard live either. Also Cruel on the TVAB is great. holly. _________________________________________________________________ Help STOP SPAM: Try the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Jan 2003 13:58:55 +1000 From: "Holly Williamson" Subject: Re: [oztori] Not-so-little dietre brummer boy Andy wrote: > >LOL! *SO* true.
