It's called Coraline, and was released at the end of last year. It's basically aimed at the Harry Potter market ... ie, it's kinda sorta scary, but young'uns should have no problem with it, and adults will appreciate all the jokes and nuances that the kiddies didn't get. It's also a really quick read ... I read it in one sitting. But as soon as I'd finished I wanted to start over again. It's far far far from Neil's best work, but still a very good read. It also shows that Neil is growing as a storyteller: I always felt that his great weakness was that he never gave his protagonists much of a character (they always seem to be the normal-person-in-a-strange-world type), but while this is in part true of Coraline too, Coraline herself is actually surprisingly well realised as a character (especially given how short the story is). And, yeah, you really *will* never look at buttons the same way again ... :-) J - --------------------------------- Yahoo! That's because there's a difference between a BS and a B[something else]. For example, a friend of mine has a Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree from Georgia Tech. It's not the same as a BS in Civil Engineering. There's some distinction that I frankly don't fully understand. :) > MS in 'human-computer interaction'? lol sounds > interesting. I remember a 2nd year lecturer of mine stating > this. That can be true, but isn't necessarily. People who want to primarily teach in uni tend to do this. Those who are more interested in research in an academic setting will go wherever the good research is, which generally means going to another uni than the one at which they did their undergrad. For those planning to go into industry, it's not really important one way or another. My three degrees are all from the same uni. If I do a PhD, it's unlikely that I'll do it in the States. I have offers from Macquarie in Sydney and Victoria in Wellington. VUW is quite attractive, because I'd be working with two people whom I adore. /nm ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Jan 2003 14:12:53 +1000 From: "Holly Williamson" Subject: [oztori] smoe-livin Smello I haven't written for ages, but I've been happily reading & occasionally roflmao in hysterics from the likes of Jules & Nathan, Andz & all other oztori-types... hee hee!
